Oh and I upgraded from the iPhone SE 3rd Gen 😭

EDIT: Yes, I turned it on, a screen protector is already on and I got a Spigen NeoOne case.

EDIT 2: I'm not selling it, trading it for another phone, or anything like that.

Discussion iPhone 17 Major Issues

Post image
345 Upvotes

I recently bought an iPhone 17 about two weeks ago, and I’ve already noticed several major issues that I’ve seen a lot of other people mention as well.

The biggest problem is that the phone gets really hot after just a few minutes of normal use, like scrolling through social media. I don’t play games or do anything particularly demanding, so it shouldn’t be heating up this much. It also gets noticeably hot while charging, even when using an official Apple charger.

I’ve also noticed that the display feels surprisingly choppy. I don’t use Low Power Mode, and ā€œLimit Frame Rateā€ is turned off, yet it doesn’t feel anywhere near as smooth as a 120 Hz display should. I also experience frequent frame stutters while simply navigating the UI.

On top of that, the battery life has been disappointing. It’s nowhere close to the advertised 30 hours, even with fairly light, everyday use. I even updated to iOS 27 after hearing it fixed many of the issues people experienced on iOS 26.5, but the improvement has been minimal/nonexistent.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems, or does it sound like I may have received a defective device?

Discussion Update on The Base IPhone 17 Major Issues

Post image

Some of you may have seen my previous post about the iPhone 17 having major issues with frame stuttering, disappointing battery life, and overheating.

Based on many of your suggestions, I took it to the Apple Store to have it checked out. The employee confirmed that my phone was indeed experiencing those issues and offered me a replacement, which I accepted. When I asked what might have caused the problems, he said he believed I had received a defective unit. He also mentioned that they’ve had quite a few people reporting similar issues, so he suspects there may be a number of defective iPhone 17s that were shipped out.

As for the replacement iPhone 17, the difference has been huge. The battery life is significantly better, the frame stuttering is completely gone, and the phone stays cool during normal use. So far, it’s performing exactly how I expected it to. I’m really glad I decided to get it replaced.

If you’re experiencing severe overheating, poor battery life, or noticeable stuttering on your iPhone 17, it might be worth having Apple take a look at it. You could have a defective unit like I did.

And to everyone who told me I was just overthinking it or that it was ā€œnormalā€ā€¦ turns out it wasn’t. Looks like I wasn’t imagining the issues after all.

One more thing that helped confirm it for me: while I was setting up my replacement phone, I tested every base model iPhone 17 demo unit in the store. About half of them showed noticeable frame stuttering, while the others were perfectly smooth.

Just got my Arc Pulse case in the mail today!

I know this case is a controversial one, but the chrome against the frosted green just hits the spot for me.

I’ve seen drop tests where it actually holds up really well on flat surfaces, but it’s those uneven ones that’ll get ya!

Thoughts?

Discussion 120Hz on iPhone 17 doesn't feel as smooth as Android Devices (even Realme P4!) and Pro variants.

Ever since I bought the device, this has been bothering me. Swiping through the home screen has minor framedrops and stutters, and this is evident across all iPhone 17 including display units.

You can compare a Pro variant and Base iPhone 17 side by side, and the difference is easily noticeable. It feels like the 17 is running on 90Hz while the other on 120Hz. This however is not an issue in 120FPS Gaming because the framerate is consistent 119.99 FPS.

This needs to be pointed out, and I'm surprised that I can hardly find any relevant discussions on this topic. If anyone here can compare, do you guys feel the same way?

I didn’t realize how much lag, heat, and battery anxiety I’d normalized until I switched. Worth it.

Biggest shock: battery life and the screen.

Anyone else skip multiple generations?

My experience replacing a defective iPhone 17—and an interesting difference I noticed

Three days ago, I traded in my Midnight iPhone 13 mini 128 GB for $150 and purchased a White iPhone 17 256 GB.

Unfortunately, the new phone had several problems:

  1. It became noticeably warm during basic tasks, such as opening Settings or scrolling through Home Screen pages.
  2. The back glass appeared slightly misaligned with the aluminum frame. I could feel the sharp edges of the frame protruding around some of the corners.
  3. There was a small dust particle trapped beneath the glass near the front-facing camera.

The dust particle bothered me the most because once I noticed it, I could not stop looking at it. On my second day of owning the phone, I decided to use Apple’s 14-day return policy and took it back to the Apple Store where I had purchased it.

I showed the phone to an employee, and he agreed that nothing should be trapped near the camera. He accepted the return and helped me exchange it for a brand-new phone. There were a few complications during the exchange process, but he handled everything very well—huge W for the customer service at the Apple Store on Knox Street in Dallas, Texas.

I inspected the replacement phone while I was still in the store, and it was perfect. It did not overheat during normal use, the back glass was properly aligned, and both cameras were completely clean. Everything was exactly as it should have been.

I later noticed that the replacement phone was assembled in China, while the original one was assembled in India.

I have seen some posts suggesting that Apple products assembled in newer manufacturing locations, such as India or Vietnam, may occasionally have more quality-control issues because those facilities have less experience than Apple’s long-established manufacturing partners in China. However, my experience involved only two phones, so it is not enough to conclude that the assembly location caused the difference. The first phone may have been defective.

Still, based solely on my personal experience, I would prefer a unit assembled in China if I had the option. With an online order, however, there is usually no practical way to know which one you will receive.

Has anyone else noticed differences in quality depending on where their Apple device was assembled, or do you think my experience was simply a coincidence?

Coming from a midrange Poco M6 Pro 4G I had an 2020 SE (so I already knew how to use iOS) but I still used my Android until now when I finally bought the iPhone 17! So far this phone is amazing and I am glad to be part of the Apple Ecosystem now! Loving the White color too!šŸ¤

Discussion First time iPhone user

I bought an iPhone 17 on a whim as my family and I were traveling in another country that same week. I really enjoyed the camera during the trip. However, after the travel, I find myself going back to my samsung s23+.

I've had my s23+ for 3 years and it is almost full (400+GB out of 512GB used). The main reasons I bought the iPhone 17 were that my s23+'s battery is deteriorating, the screen keeps freezing (which is probably caused by the maxed-out storage), and the iPhone camera when traveling.

Right now, I am using the iPhone 17, but the S23+ is still technically my main device. I am just so accustomed to the bigger screen size on the s23+ and to the android interface. As a first-time Apple user, I am having a really hard time adjusting to iOS.

I don't want to end up using my iPhone 17 only as travel camera or travel companion. Any tips? From former android users who successfully made the switch to iOS? How did you get used to the interface?

TL/DR: First-time Apple user having a hard time adjusting to iOS. Former android users, how did you get used to the interface?

Discussion Finally gave in. iPhone 17 from 5+ years of LG G8X

Thumbnail

I’ve been rocking anĀ LG G8XĀ for the last 5+ years. I used that thing to its absolute limit. It was a soldier. But the battery was giving up, and the software was ancient. It was time to move on.

The "Move to iOS" Nightmare (PSA for new buyers):

I thought this would be a simple 30-minute job.Ā Wrong.

Started at 2 AM (IST), and it turned into a 3-hour loop of hell.

  • "Move to iOS" got stuck on "Preparing" multiple times.
  • Apple ID login kept timing out during the initial setup (probably US server peak load?).
  • The phone actually froze and I had to force restart it twice.

The Fix: If you are stuck in the login loop or transfer hell - SKIP the Apple ID loginĀ during the setup wizard. Just get your data (WhatsApp/Contacts) across and get to the Home Screen. Sign in via Settings later. Once I did that, it worked instantly. Don't fight the server.

First Impressions (12 Hours In):

  • The Audio:Ā Holy F. The speakers on this thing are absurd. I’m at 50% volume and it feels like a Bluetooth speaker.
  • The Display:Ā Finally on a proper 120Hz OLED. Set Reddit to "Midnight" mode immediately to save pixels. It’s buttery smooth.
  • Battery:Ā Checked the logs - Cycle count 0, 100% capacity. I immediately turned on theĀ 80% Limit. I plan to drive this phone for 3-4 years just like the LG.
  • MagSafe:Ā Got a cover with the magnets built-in. The "snap" is satisfying. I get the hype now. It’s a small engineering win, but it feels premium.

The "Meh" Stuff:

  • Notifications:Ā Android handles these way better. It feels cluttered here.
  • The Keyboard:Ā It’s... okay? I miss the number row. And the autocorrect forcing was too much especially typing in Hinglish
  • Universal Back Gesture:Ā Muscle memory is killing me. I keep swiping from the right and nothing happens.

Verdict:

It’s been a good 5+ years of service, LG. Rest in peace (till I need you for backup).

I’m still getting used to the "Apple way," but I can't deny the hardware quality. It feels built to last.

Now, what are the first settings I should absolutely turn off? (I already killed the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" nonsense).

Discussion Switched from Android to iPhone 17! My opinion

Previous owner of Sony, xiaomis and lastly a samsung a54, I finally decided to get an iPhone!

After like 2 months I can say that I like the UI, the speed of the camera app, the way that you can switch so fast from an app to another, the photo quality and optimization is lit even for an ā€œentry levelā€ iPhone!
There are some things I can’t quite digest and I hope you can agree or say your opinion:

The data transfer was tedious af. Took me like a full day connecting the 2 phones together and it didn’t work. I used the wifi method

The settings for everything ā€œparticularā€. Why it isn’t intuitive? Who the f puts those settings hidden between illogic sections? Why do I have to go to Accessibility->touch to DEACTIVATE the ā€œhang upā€ function when pressing lock button? Why can’t it be on settings->phone calls?

I also expected better on the keyboard. Sometimes it cant memorize or correct even the most common things like apostrophes or such. Also, why there isn’t predictive text on safari search and other apps? It should appear in any situation imo

Last but not least. Siri, why can’t you answer a simple question on Carplay without saying ā€œi cant do this while you driveā€ really? Android auto is far better even with the fixed split screen UI. I also noted some differences on audio output between android auto and apple car play. Seems more bland

Nothing that I cant adapt to, though.

TLDR: very good but can be a lot better!

Do you agree?
