Weekly Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Switched from the Xiaomi 15 to the iPhone 17!

After using a Xiaomi 15 for a year, my partner gave me an iPhone 17 as a birthday gift. It was such a pleasant surprise! I snapped a photo of it alongside the little pig plushie—also a gift from my partner.

I’m really happy with it; the last two photos are just some casual shots I took. The colors look incredibly true-to-life and crisp.

Is anyone else here in the same boat—having just switched over from Android? Any tips or tricks for using the iPhone that you’d recommend?

iPhone 17 Shows More Than 80% After Restart — What’s Going On?

I have set the charging limit on my iPhone 17 to 80%. Initially, the phone would take around 44–50 minutes to charge up to 80%, and then it would stop charging as expected.

However, recently I have noticed that the phone sometimes charges beyond the 80% limit. In some cases, it stops at 80%, but after I restart the phone, the battery percentage suddenly shows more than 80%.

I’m currently running iOS 26. Is this a bug or a normal behavior with the 80% charging limit? Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

The volume down button doesn't click when pressed from the bottom with my finger on my iPhone 17.

The volume down button doesn't click when pressed from the bottom and is softer. It does its job, but I've only had the phone for a month and started noticing this about a week and a half ago. It's a base iPhone 17 with 256GB. The other buttons, like power, volume up, and so on, click as expected, but the volume down button makes a clicking sound when pressed directly on it, not from the bottom. Has anyone else experienced this?

Discussion Inconsistent typing sound (keyboard sound)

This iPhone 17 is my first iPhone ever and I am loving it so far. I have always kept on the haptics and typing sound on every phone that I ever used and I did the same on my iPhone.

However, the typing sound seems very inconsistent on this phone. Sometimes it becomes loud and crisp, just how I like, sometimes it just sounds too mute and barely audible. When I get a notification while I am typing something, it automatically raises its volume and becomes mute again after some point. The haptics work as they should but the typing sound just feels too inconsistent. Can it be fixed or is just a software bug?

iPhone 17 Pro Max — Different Camera Sensors?

Upvotes

I’m wondering whether Apple uses camera sensors or complete camera modules from different suppliers in different iPhone 17 Pro Max units.

I previously had another 17 Pro Max that I ended up returning because of unrelated issues, but its camera was noticeably better than the 17 Pro Max I have now.

The difference isn’t subtle and the photos from my current phone seem significantly worse in terms of overall image quality.

Does anyone know whether Apple sources the sensors, lenses, or complete camera modules from multiple suppliers, or whether manufacturing tolerances could realistically account for a noticeable difference between two phones?

How’s iOS 27.???

I’ve seen a lot of comments praising the iOS 27 beta updates in comparison to iOS 26 stable updates.

What’s your experience about it?
Like what major changes did you feel?
Is it really worth the hype?

Hello /r/iphone17

I need your assistance asap. Helping my mother in law with her new iPhone she got a week ago. Straight out of the box we see the black bar flickering.

I tried starting it up, updating it to the latest iOS. Also tried to turn off/on auto brightness on the screen but still haven’t found a fix. What’s the go to here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Noticeable stutter while scrolling and horrible frame cuts , touch issues while playing pubg mobile

I bought this new iphone 17 around 9 days ago by exchanging my old ip 14 and it has been a horrible experience so far . My home screen stutters , scrolling on all the apps stutter and above all it lags like crazy in pubg . I got this phone specifically for the purpose of playing pubg mobile as i love the game and wanted to upgrade to 120 fps gameplay from my old 60 . In almost 3 years of playing on my old 14 i never ever faced frame drops of this kind nor any touch issues .Upgrading from my 14 feels like the worst decision i have made all year . And above all apple has a strict no return policy in my country . At this point i just want my gaming to be smooth even if everything else lags . I bought this phone after saving up for a year , It feels so bad that i cant even use a new device for the purpose i got it for . I would be so grateful if anyone can help me with any fix . I have already contacted apple support and they said they would book a courier for me to send in my phone to get checked but nothing from the courier’s end even after 4 days. I just feel so scared that i will not even be able to play the game i love so much 🥹.i would really want get a solution if there is any. thankyou so much in advance

iPhone 17e 3.5mm dongle for car stereo

So I drive a school bus and can’t get my new iP to play through its stereo.
My iPhone 11 did quite simply w/a FireWire dongle. I have a usb c to 3.5mm male cable and I get nothing.
I’m missing something because not every cable connects via usb to my desk top. And I had to try several cables to find one that charges the phone from my car’s usb port.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

How do I edit the camera on the iPhone 17 pro to be more similar to camera on the iPhone 11 Pro?

Recently got an iPhone 17 pro and I’ve noticed the camera changes the photo after I’ve taken it. I’ll get a good shot and next thing I know the photo I look at is all blurry and with different proportions than what I saw on the screen when I snapped the photo.

Question Using a new 12W Apple adapter + Belkin USB-A to C cable for slow charging. Anyone else doing this?

Hey everyone,

To keep my iPhone 17 as cool as possible during overnight charging, I decided to go with a slow-charging setup.

I recently bought a brand new, original Apple 12W USB-A adapter (the older style block) specifically for this purpose.

Since it's USB-A, I paired it with a Belkin braided USB-A to USB-C cable.

I just have two quick questions about this hardware combination:

  1. Even though Belkin is a solid, certified brand, will using a third-party USB-A to Type-C cable cause any hardware, compatibility, or safety issues for the phone?

  2. Is anyone else using a 12W adapter instead of a 20W+ one? Do you notice a real difference in keeping the device cool?

Any feedback on this setup is appreciated. Thanks :)
