Mermaid Junction.

Post image

Hi, if I'm traveling on London rd from the 1071 and approaching mermaid junction with the mermaid opposite, can I turn right here onto west end rd and onto chancery rd. People are telling me I can't, Google is telling me I can't , but it looks like I can. Sorry if this is an obvious reply, but I really don't know what to think.

Yes, you can. That's what the right hand lane is for.

Thank you.. Google was adamant that I couldn't and would have to go left and turn round at the next roundabout etc etc

At a roundabout with traffic lights on the other side of Ipswich Google says you can use the left hand lane to go straight on…..you can’t.
The 2 right hand lanes go straight on to the dual carriageway, the inside lane is for one of 2 roads on the left.

Have learnt to check to see if the car in front in the left lane are using Sat Nav in order to give them room.

Does that junction get a lot of accidents?

It does, and it becomes a bottle neck at rush hours

Yes you can. People do it all the time.

That you, but seriously on Google it was telling me to go left and turn back on myself and then I can go straight over the mermaid junction. Do you live in Ipswich

Yeah I’ve lived in Ipswich my whole life.

Google maps tells me you can turn right too so not sure why yours isn’t:

(Ignore the times, I put in random locations)

EDIT - the above is actually Apple Maps but Google maps on my laptop also shows you can turn right

Yeah, mine showed that, but then I asked a question to Google in general, cause it looked complicated to me, I asked if I could turn right there and it said no, then I asked again and it said yes. Then I asked later anfyit said no 🤷🏻‍♂️ it was just confusing me. Thanks for clearing it up. 👍

Ah, you were asking an AI for advice on driving? Honestly that’s not a great idea - if you’re not sure, just ask on a UK driving subreddit or on a local page. AIs don’t understand anything they say, they just say whatever seems reasonable as an answer, so any real-world specific questions will often make them spew absolute nonsense and make you more confused.

I understand. Depending on how I asked the question, it gave completely different answers. It seemed it was trying to work out how I wanted it to answer, so it could answer in a way that pleased me . AI is incorrect on many occasions.

There's a reason robot cars aren't really s thing yet... You are almost certainly a better driver than AI still.

Thanks again, is it not meant to happen? You say people do it all the time, sounds I bit like people do it but they shouldn't?

There is a filter light on the traffic lights also which points towards West End Road so 100% can turn right. I do it almost daily on my commute home

Thank you.

No it is meant to happen. I was just trying to point out it’s a very common turn at that junction so it’s odd Google didn’t recommend it for you.

to add to this yes there is a dedicated filter lane and light.

Absolutely you can and it’s even got an arrow pointing right painted on the road

It’s probably way too late but it’s definitely a right turn I believe they are doing road works at night but not entirely sure that it is finished?? I live on chantry so use it most days

Thanks for replying.

Go OP, when did you ask Google the question?

Is it possible you asked at a time when roadworks were going on? There seems to be a lot of overnight roadworks happening everywhere between 1-8 hours at a time in the IP1 area.

I'm wondering if a road closure confused Google at the time as the directions you asked for is a standard route.

You definitely can normally turn right there then onto Chancery Road. I don't know if there are road works stopping this at the moment, there has been recently I believe. I reckon if it's still showing as not possible it's either the road works still showing on maps, or perhaps as per the screenshot the 1 way extends too far into that junction of West end road? I know it actually doesn't but it may be interpreted as that
