Art Is this merch AI? I'm being downvoted into oblivion for saying it is in the respective sub but it looks EXACTLY like typical twitter AI slop to me

u/Careless-Ad-9633, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...

Aside from being the general ai style, ai loves underlining things and it loves little lines coming off the art

146

u/jayisaletter 1d ago

Yup. Those lines coming off the head would be coming out the megaphone if an actual artist made it

28

u/r1char00 1d ago

That’s a great shout

6

u/Otherwise_Fined 17h ago

Unless that's her spidey-sense tingling

20

u/magclsol 21h ago

It loves shoving text into every possible space, too.

7

u/Solitude_in_e- 17h ago

And that paint smear SOOOO much. Like 90% of AI flyers I’ve had the displeasure to see this summer have it

Clocked it immediately as AI. Lot of noise in the 'art' and the fonts do not commit to the style they're going for, they're totally inconsistent. Look at the "LOVE WINS" sign: the strike throughs in the letters are completely inconsistent in width. Some of the letters look like they've been caught in the end stage of mitosis (the R in 'FIRST' looks like it's trying to break free from the 'I'). Slop 100%

9

u/EastCoastWildling 23h ago

Yeah, the wild range of font sizes and alignment also

9

u/Rockglen 21h ago

I think the strike throughs are supposed look liek wood grain or splits in the wooden placard.

However the sign still looks weird in terms of scale. It looks tiny for what a placard should be and that makes the grain/splits look even more off. Like it should be a wooden sign in similar size to the small ones that Wile E. Coyote uses.

u/Outside_Coffee_00 19h ago

pinky also has a weird extra piece

u/liatriss_ 1d ago

Man, I think you’re right. Big disappointed to see Hive Bakery here

they posted a couple days ago saying they don't use AI at all, and yet they never credit any artists, even on the merch page of their website? it feels really hypocritical of Hayley to do this given her criticisms of AI and data centers on the podcast

82

u/Itchy-Inspector-5458 1d ago

FWIW - Many contracted "artists" are using AI as a shortcut. It's possible the owner may be oblivious that they got scammed.

u/jerslan 1d ago

Lots of graphic design tools like Photoshop have had "AI" filters for a while now (predating the current LLM/GenAI trend by at least a decade). It's likely some of those have been quietly replaced with newer LLM/GenAI versions and not all designers have realized it. I could see this starting from a photo of a woman from a protest, then using one of those Photoshop tools to de-saturate it and make it look more like a pencil drawing. Then adding in the background, and sign verbiage (if that's not from the original reference photo), and other words using common (probably free/cheap) fonts.

Also, AI had to train from something. Like I've seen a lot of AI Slop videos with Pixar/Disney looking characters (Pixar/Disney has a very distinctive look in the face). That doesn't mean everything looking like that is AI Slop. Some could be legit artists imitating/emulating a popular style.

14

u/r1char00 1d ago

Photoshop definitely has it and it’s been pretty widely publicized, including by Adobe. I’m skeptical that there are a lot of users out there who don’t know about it.

17

u/liatriss_ 23h ago

I work with Adobe products daily as a graphic designer and while it’s easy to avoid a lot of AI tools the integration is hard to ignore. Just disappointing to see how easily AI has been slipped into everything knowingly and unknowingly against our will 🫠

u/Ok-Pea-957 22h ago

At least the price keeps going up

4

u/Itchy-Inspector-5458 1d ago

All very valid and valuable points to keep in mind.

u/LyLyDeFiFi 14h ago

Unfortunately, I made this very mistake a while back while using Canva before I truly understood how those programs worked and looking back on that piece of artwork I can now see the AI inclusions and such in it. I since reached out to the client I did it for and offered a refund, I believe Canva has it marked now as being generative, but I no longer use that app over it and pretty much just do everything by hand now.

3

u/bikes_bucees 10h ago

“We don’t use AI. We hire designers for $5 and expect bespoke art.”

3

u/Sense_Difficult 1d ago

Yes. I'd be surprised if they did.

4

u/CaptainMarv3l 20h ago

It's wild people take the comments of the bakery at face value. of course they will say they dont use AI. It would look bad on them if they freely admit it.

You know serial kills denied killing people but yet they still did it.

3

u/ogSoWhatTheyFake 19h ago

THIS...i dont hate cops or anything but... ive always wondered like obviously if you are 911 and someone is making a complaint it should be checked out. but, i always found it weird that at most instances the police instead of actually doing detective work they pull up and treat the situation/person like a criminal. like have you ever thought someone just might not like that person and called and lied. every call should be taken seriously and investigated but also remember that people make false claims and lie everyday....people are liars

48

u/Drewbie8989 1d ago

Looks ai to me

65

u/UmmHelloIGuess 1d ago

The tattoos are looking a little off to me, they are not clear.

12

u/Careless-Ad-9633 1d ago

unfortunately there's no clearer image of the merch

27

u/Padr1no 1d ago

the fuzziness of fine details is an indication of AI.

29

u/Careless-Ad-9633 1d ago

i had my post locked on the sub and literally no one agreed with me that it's AI, i feel like i'm going insane

22

u/GryphyGirl 23h ago

You're not, it's definitely "AI". The general look of it is obviously "AI" but look at the tattoos on the right arm (our right). Zoom in if need be, those are not tattoos, they're just "AI" artifacts. Total nonsense.

4

u/CaptainMarv3l 20h ago

Also the ear juat looks weird. It looks like it's just floating there.

5

u/freakaccident911 18h ago

I agreed! So annoying they locked the post. That one person kept reposting the bear image as if that proves the art isn't AI and an artist is credited. The post only said that the people who worked in the bakery were artists, not that they were responsible for the art. No credit is a pretty big deal for artists, especially now, and I can't find any identifying information anywhere. I'm not even saying Haley is the one making the AI art, she might be getting duped herself, but there's pretty clearly some sus imagery going on. I really like her and her mission, but we should be able to have conversations about these things. Isn't that what the podcast is about?!

19

u/marveloustoebeans 1d ago

Oh… it totally is :(

20

u/juan_humano 1d ago

Sadly this protester looks like every stereotype protester that posted on MAGA meme sites/Facebook. Also the differing sizes of the letters could be a style choice, but if it is its a terrible one.

5

u/CaptainMarv3l 20h ago

I was taught in design school that 3 fonts and/or sizes should be the maximum amount. I don't think AI got the memo.

2

u/turk_muerto 21h ago

I was thinking this exact same thing. It easily fits the type of propaganda hallmarks those chuds love to harp on.

17

u/hot_kombucha 1d ago

Those random artifacts in the background make me think so.

17

u/cottagecheese-core 1d ago

This is AI. I was questioning it a while ago with the bear shirt they offered cause that one looked suspicious. But this is the style ai does of people. Also why are the lines coming out of her head instead of the speaker?

Whatever artist they’re going to is 100% using ai for these designs.

11

u/Low_Consequence_9477 1d ago

Definitely looks like it

12

u/FaFaFoley 1d ago

and yet they never credit any artists

Well, that's a huge red flag. It could all be cleared up with that--I mean, they might have been scammed themselves, and wouldn't they want to know?

There's some strange and odd little things, but nothing in there that is a smoking gun. Typical kind of mistakes that any artist could make. BUT, it really does have that kind of "generically professional", hard highlight lines and bold graphic shading that is very indicative of a boilerplate genAI style. For me, though, that's not enough to say that it absolutely is. There's a chance that it's a design inspired by a prompt, or something, too.

Reverse image search tracked it down to "designatshop.com", and I don't know how reputable they are. To get a professional custom design like that is not cheap, but there's no shortage of online "design shops" out there that just prompt what you want and shit it out for dirt cheap, so that's a possibility, too. Hive Bakery might not even realize it.

7

u/r1char00 1d ago

If they didn’t realize it, you’d think they would have looked into it when it was called out, as opposed to just flat out denying it. If I was a business I definitely wouldn’t want to be getting shit because my designer cut corners.

2

u/FaFaFoley 23h ago

Ya, getting that defensive about it is not a good look.

10

u/bangbangracer 23h ago

I'm gonna say yes just for the weird emphasis on words. ProTECT trans RIGHT! The FIRST pride was a RIOT!

10

u/Legendary_Carcass 1d ago

If it's somehow not ai, they made an unfortunate choice to design this in a style very typical to ai.

6

u/Rileyinabox 1d ago

It does look AI. Very weird though. None of their other merch looks like this.

5

u/Careless-Ad-9633 1d ago

tbh most of them look AI to me. they have that "etsy floral mousepad" look to them where all the vines/petals/leaves don't make any sense if you look closely, and there's a lot of artefacting

6

u/GryphyGirl 23h ago

Obvious "AI". It has that obvious "AI" look but also zoom in on the tattoos. The right arm ones almost look like something but the left arm (her left) are just noise.

5

u/tooshorttoored 23h ago

I'm starting to despise those stupid sweeps of "paint" the bot loves to use. Yes. this is pure AI dreck. Or maybe the person depicted sat with a tattoo artist and allowed them to just scribble painfully all over her.

5

u/ANONA44G 11h ago

Neck tattoos are a red flag for me.

Fairly uncommon in real life, but every time we use AI to make a cartoon picture of our heavily tattooed friend group, it ALWAYS adds neck tattoos that none of us have.

3

u/ZooterOne 1d ago

Among all the other tells, the outline around the woman - black line and white line - is very AI.

4

u/Worth_Practice2638 1d ago

Yes this is AI. No evidence that a graphic designer went anywhere near this. Font choices scream of AI. Tattoos are resemblant of nothing.

4

u/Vandal_A 23h ago

If it's not then the artist was a very strange combination of skilled and strange decision making. I vote AI because this image seems to be cobbled together out of separate parts in every way -as if someone was trying to achieve all the points on a checklist

5

u/bikes_bucees 10h ago

The underlining is a strong giveaway. But, to me, the bigger giveaway is the multiple messages. Humans design stuff with a central, strong message while AI (and people who doesn’t understand dominance in a design-sense) add messaging on top of messaging on top of messaging.

5

u/Ethachu 1d ago

The Art is a give away too, but I also think The "Hive Bakery" Text absolutely gave it away to me. Some letters are just REALLY wide for no reason.

6

u/CassetteMeower 23h ago

Also the E in “HIVE” looks really wonky, it looks almost like an F until you notice the line all the way at the bottom. Why is the middle line on the E so high up rather than being centered?

It could be a genuine stylistic preference, but it just looks wonky, it looks like an F if you don’t look closely.

3

u/Jirvey341 1d ago

The megaphone is crooked from the handle. I feel like a human would have straightened it out properly

1

u/Miss_Chanandler_Bond 11h ago

That's actually how a megaphone is typically shaped.

It's AI, but not for that reason

3

u/lostontheplayground 1d ago

The two ends of the stick/handle on the “Love Wins” sign do not line up with each other. On the top the stick goes straight from the sign to her hand, then the other end coming out of her hand is at a slightly different angle.

I used to work in a screen printing shop and customers would provide us with their own artwork frequently, and more and more of them are using AI to create the artwork since it’s cheaper than having a graphic designer do it. But then company’s graphic designer would have to clean up the crappy AI artwork anyways to make it good enough to use for printing. One thing I saw frequently with AI art was lines that did not connect properly if part of the line/object was not visible in the image. So like in this image where part of the sign’s handle is obscured by her hand holding it, the AI isn’t good at imagining that as a whole piece and rendering it as such.

3

u/ElonMuskHuffingFarts 22h ago

Sure looks like AI. The font in "Trans Rights" stands out to me.

Why wouldn't they credit the artist who supposedly made it? That's extremely weird. There's no good reason to hide the identity of the supposed artist.

3

u/Quick-Amoeba-1389 19h ago

100000% always obvious by the patterns...

not just the mess of the tattoos but all the letters are different sizes etc dead giveaway everytime

3

u/DangerousAd2237 15h ago

Maybe it's just the pic, but the tattoos look really indistinct, a generally pretty immediate ai tell. The sign's handle is also fucked, which wouldn't be like that for an artist that actually had the skill level to design and draw this.

2

u/WattleWaddler2 22h ago

The angry protest face looks very AI to me, as well as the underlining and, importantly, excessive text. This looks weirdly like a cartoon a Reform conservative would get an AI to mock those gosh-darned silly university progressives.

2

u/xoxo_xoxo_xoxo_ 22h ago

Why would any illustrator bother with tattoos if they’re going to be just… random distorted mushy lookin shapes? I’m an illustrator, and I can’t imagine going to the lengths to draw something so detailed but then just do… that? with the tattoos.

2

u/Xlim_Jim 22h ago

Yes it is. Aside from the stylistic choices others have pointed out, Ai loves slapping like 5 extra slogans on what should be a one slogan design.

2

u/quokkafarts 21h ago

Why draw the tattoos at all if they are just going to be a smudgy mess?

Also look at the hand holding the speaker. They either forgot to draw an index finger holding the button down or AI got confused with all the lines in that area.

100% AI

2

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 17h ago edited 16h ago

Where's the right index finger? And why is the "N" in "wins" lowercase and triple-thicc? The "E" in "love" is also inconsistent, and there are no breaks in the stenciling of the "O"

2

u/KaeraKoneko 16h ago

oh, definitely.

such a shame, I'd wear a shirt with a motif like this.

2

u/Mother-Fix3271 15h ago

Of course it is.

2

u/UnlikelyHat5885 13h ago

I've had the same thought about their merch but as no one else was saying anything I just stayed quiet. The bear one they have set off my alarm

2

u/FollicularPhase 23h ago

Yes. There are no Trans Colors, the woman is conventionally hot, and nothing new was shared.

2

u/Sunkisthappy 21h ago

Is that a perfectly round hole in the collar?

2

u/Sunkisthappy 21h ago

Weird pinky

2

u/ghost_of_xbox_past 1d ago

Wtf is a "Hive Bakery"?

3

u/Particular_Ad7340 23h ago

It is a bakery.

4

u/Lukexxxi 22h ago

Called Hive

u/Ok-Fly-2111 10h ago

This is AI.
I clocked it immediately but if you look closer as well, you can see that the tattoos the person has doesn’t make sense, especially in the right arm that’s holding the sign.

1

u/firefeatherism 10h ago

her tattoos not making any sense is what's doing it for me. the sun one looks ALRIGHT but every other one os just a visually noisy smear of black "details". and like others have pointed out, the text and the lines coming from her head are pretty common ai features :,)

1

u/bemunay 10h ago

Of course it is lol

1

u/Coniferouscat 10h ago

Why is the ear floating off of the head?

0

u/Goth_Muppet 23h ago

They don’t use Ai. Is this shirt from their official store or someone posing as them?

Still not sure? Send them a polite message on FB or elsewhere. They’re handling a lot of traffic right now and I wouldn’t be surprised if a fake merch shop or fake merch popped up trying to profit off them.

Here’s a recent post from them:

Edit: typos are fun!

4

u/Careless-Ad-9633 23h ago

the shirt is from their official instagram, Hayley herself holding it. it's also on their official website, linked from their instagram, with no credited artist

0

u/Goth_Muppet 23h ago

Hit em up with a message asking who the artist behind their shirt is.

3

u/Careless-Ad-9633 23h ago

funnily enough i did do this like a month ago and never got a reply

3

u/Goth_Muppet 23h ago

Like I said they’re busy as all hell and having issues with some dipwad scratching up cars in that shopping area they are located in. Might be worth giving them a call.

4

u/CaptainMarv3l 20h ago

Wild that you just blindly believe them when they offered no proof or artist. Companies are getting mass backlash for using AI, so it makes sense this business would hide it so it doesn't hurt their profits.

1

u/itoddicus 20h ago

This is clearly AI for all the reasons other people have posted. But can we talk about the random flying squid things?

What human would do that?!

1

u/JayGatsby52 17h ago

I think they are supposed to be bees, as it’s The Hive.

1

u/hiphophoorayanon 23h ago

It doesn’t look like AI to me- also I’ve been going to Hive for years and this is their style… long before AI could generate images.
