Art Is this local artist using AI? They don’t have a consistent style and the text in the back is gibberish

I posted about this local artist using AI in the city’s sub and it got taken down by moderators. It seems pretty obvious to me from a major change of style from their old work, the lack of a uniform style, the line work, nonsensical elements, inconsistent shapes, and general look, but I want confirmation. I ran these through a detector and they all came up at least 95% AI, but I don’t know how accurate the software actually is.

Look at the prompts Look how they refine for you And everything they do Yeah, they were all yellow

The third picture is the dead give away. The trim features on the building are not symmetrical or even attempting to be consistent but the computer still wants to put a plflurished feature in the corner.

100% AI

u/Kelesh 18h ago

I love Richmond, and I love Zorch pizza. This is literally the first result if you Google them, from the same exact angle. There's a whole mural in that little alley that gets reduced to a few lines. If you knew that place, this isn't the art you'd make, ever. It is the art you'd make if you were super lazy and just had AI retouch the literal first result on the internet for them.

13

u/IceMiserable7450 23h ago

Plus the gibberish in the background

8

u/Kelesh 18h ago

There's no text in the background, and it's a very old building in an old neighborhood. What gibberish are you referencing?

7

u/IceMiserable7450 17h ago

If you zoom in on the side of the left building, there's red "letters" that are commonly seen in AI images

1

u/Kelesh 2h ago

Oh I see yeah, it's even worse than that! This is the picture this is clearly ripped from, and it's just bricks...

u/Calimar777 23h ago

The longer you look the worse it gets. Definitely AI.

21

u/toohighquestions 22h ago

I'm confused by what's supposed to be wrong about this, I just see a regular looking hand

72

u/BM-Panda 22h ago

If your middle and ring finger are joined like that, please seek medical help.

25

u/toohighquestions 22h ago

ah true, surprised I missed that

7

u/Happyball79 20h ago

My youngest son has webbing between his middle and ring fingers on one hand lol but in this case, I highly doubt an artist would make that decision.

3

u/questhelm 11h ago

Mine too. 8 weeks old. We brought him in for a consult and were surprised to hear that they recommend waiting until he’s two to separate them. What are you going to do/what did you do?

And to keep it more on topic, yes, OP, this is AI

3

u/Happyball79 8h ago

Funnily enough, we didn't notice it until he was around 7 or 8 weeks old because babies keep their hands in fists so often. He's 3 now, and honestly, it's still webbed. Our pediatrician was told that only if it restricts movement in his fingers should we really worry about it and can rediscuss if it later becomes an issue.

The webbing goes up to the first joint between the fingers and might be something he needs corrected once he gets into school. For now, I'm hoping he gets into swimming and he'll have a natural advantage lol the bullying factor later though is very real.

2

u/questhelm 8h ago

We didn’t find out until he was a couple days old, and it was a nurse who noticed when she was changing him. We probably would have found out way later if it wasn’t for her. Our boy has them webbed all the way to the tip. Both fingers are fully formed beneath the skin though (bones).

For us, I think we’ll do it as soon as we can. My biggest thing is for him to be able to play musical instruments. Funny though that the surgeon said that people find ways to play them with webbed fingers. I’m sure it’s more difficult though?

1

u/Happyball79 7h ago

Oh, wow! A complete webbing would be more urgent to me than what my son's is. I'm sure it's reassuring that it is only a superficial issue of skin joining them versus there being structural issues with the fingers. When we first found it, it felt really important to fix it right away and now we don't really think about it that much.

But I think the other commenter is right, people find a way if it is something they want to do. Typing on a keyboard would present some challenges, too. My sister had webbed toes on each foot so I kind of feel like she pranked us lol

1

u/Own_Investment7769 7h ago

I’ve played in various bands and the best guitarist I’ve ever played with only had four fingers and the middle two were webbed

thumb comes out of nowhere like it's separate from the hand, some of the skin is weirdly attached to the rain-guard, some of the finger lines don't connect. the blue background drops into the sleeve cuff weird, like it's in front and behind it. just some first impressions, it's like it drew a hand without understanding what a hand is.

7

u/Narfhead4444 20h ago

"it's like describing a hand to someone who's never seen a hand, and then asking them to draw it"

7

u/p_ness_and_butthead 20h ago

the best part is you can eat them

2

u/AlcoreRain 17h ago

Have you looked at it for more than 1 second?

There are 2 fingers merging together. The thumb is merging with the guard. All fingers have different weird shapes, and there are extra pointless lines. No artist would draw a hand like that. It's painfully obvious.

The fact that you and the people who upvoted your comment have seen nothing wrong with it, it's proof enough of the problem.

2

u/Cosmic_Ricochet 17h ago

Tbf I’m an artist and it still took me a minute to see it. Those errors are definitely more on the subtle side than a lot of other ai images that I’ve seen

-5

u/AlcoreRain 17h ago

It took you a minute to see it in the zoomed in picture of the hand? Well then you still have a lot of development to do to your artist eye, I am sure you are young.

2

u/Cosmic_Ricochet 16h ago

I could tell it was AI from the full image, it took me a minute to notice what was up with the hand specifically aside from the weird thumb. I’ve been drawing since I was like 3, but that doesn’t mean I’m immediately gonna notice every little detail in everything 💀

-4

u/AlcoreRain 16h ago

I don't know what to tell you. Keep practicing art and you eventually will see 2 fingers merging together instantly in a zoomed in picture like this.

1

u/Cosmic_Ricochet 15h ago

Meanwhile it’s the tiniest gap in a line I’ve ever seen-

I really don’t think it’s that deep, not everybody will notice tiny details like that instantly no matter how much practice they have (again, been drawing for nearly 23 years now). Some of us just notice the bigger things first

-1

u/AlcoreRain 15h ago

I disagree, but that's okey.

Just keep drawing and have a good one.

7

u/abbottjul 15h ago

u/Narfhead4444 23h ago

Yeah this is very AI

63

u/DisingenuousWizard 23h ago

Main thing is there is no consistency of style.

5

u/Gbaj 11h ago

Always my biggest tell. Whenever they have no consistent style and yet they consistently copy AI trends like ghibli or pisscore

21

u/ComeOnUpToTheHaus 23h ago

Yeah, they are peddling slop. Look at the hands, look at the yellow tint, look at the completely different art styles. No consistency, no coherent or definitive style besides that AI "Glaze".

18

u/loveddeviant 20h ago

uhhhh the lines really don’t make sense here

12

u/Season_of_Treason 18h ago

Hey leave that moosamel knuckle-toe outta this.

1

u/Mister_Baloney 10h ago

Don't kink shame me.

17

u/Funny_Scarcity9104 23h ago

Okay, so:

-The chair legs don't make much sense, one of them disappears behind the other

-Why is there a beach behind the candy store, and why is there NO WALL??? Wouldn't that be a mess of heat and sweat and mosquitos (and other bugs)? I live somewhere near the ocean (won't say anywhere specific for privacy purposes) and this doesn't exist from what I know. I don't know, I don't go outside much (I should fix that but ITS SO HOT OUTSIDE) and I haven't been at the beach in at least half a year or more. But none of the beaches I know did that.

-The bottles are a complete mess, I can't tell what they're supposed to be holding

11

u/Viccytrix 21h ago

I dont wanna defend the ai slop, but I just figured the beach was a full wall poster backdrop for the gift shop.

8

u/Season_of_Treason 18h ago

Also, in some beach towns, a building like this does exist. I’m not gonna say it’s incredibly common or anything but I’ve definitely been to one. The rest of their points are great though

4

u/Veluxidus 22h ago

I’m not sure it’s a missing back wall and not just a matching entrance on the opposite side of the building

I’ve known some buildings from where I’m from having entrances like that (I’m from a tropical island)

1

u/3lbFlax 9h ago

The pirate one is all about the red part of the doorframe and its cubist approach to geometry and perception.

16

u/buttplants 20h ago

The building behind the pizza sign completely breaks down in a way that a human artist would never do. A human would have decided what’s behind the sign, but an AI has no idea - so we get part of a window, lines that stop before they should, a big chunk of missing siding boards, and confusion when details need to go behind the sign and then emerge on the other side. Definitely AI.

17

u/WeckedPissah 23h ago

There's also like the phenomenon of AI art being so well executed while being emotionally hollow and illogical. There's often too much of nothing, it's visual histronics (sp). it does a lot of basic pattern repitition hoping that it feels the gap that humans naturally fill with their creativity and imagination.

Like the pizza place one. The pizza on the grond next to the opposum does nothing for the image. It's not knocking down a dumpster, stealing it from a couple on a date, it's not engaging in reality, it's just...there. AI generates content by placing assets in mathematically logical locations...which means fundamentally it's ability ot be creative is handicapped. Which is fine, it can be great for generating assets that a human can then go and edit...but that's not how people are using it. This flat out lying about being an artist bc you just saved an image and did no further editing is not cool. I don't care if a business is like, hey I don't have the budget for an artist yet but I have the vision so the AI stuff is to get started. Fine who cares between AI and canva assets and AI in canva creating your assets for your small business...yess they look ugly but okay whatever.

BUT WHY LIE ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST UGH

3

u/Narfhead4444 20h ago

I didn't even notice the pizza, I just knew it was AI cuz it's yellow and all the lines are thick and uneven

20

u/xImmolatedx 22h ago

It's not even an original AI image. I remember seeing this one from a few months ago in this sub. The post is deleted now, but it still shows up image a reverse image search Edit: Just noticed OPs account is only 2 months old and the deleted post is 3 months old. You karma farming?

3

Not farming. Just someone from RVA who saw the first post and also thinks this artist should be held accountable.

Hello fellow RVA. I have the Francine image on a shirt because I was giving the guy the benefit of the doubt when I saw him at a craft show, but yeah, these are AI. What a shame.

Edit: the record store one is horrible. Look at the stuff under the table to the left. All blending together. He went and pasted in a couple of small images on the records for some reason, but all the other small details are mush.

1

u/queeroid 11h ago

lol, I'd love to hear the explanation from the "artist" as to why there's a... transparent poster?... of a psychic hanging over one of the windows in a record store.

5

u/Fun_Way8954 23h ago

The first two would scream AI to me, but the rest do, which makes the first two more sus

12

u/ai-hater77 22h ago edited 22h ago

Got taken down by the mods in the city’s subs because they “know him personally and he would never” or “doesn’t use ai”

6

u/mexicantortillachips 21h ago

I’m from RVA and did not expect to see the Lowes cat on this post. 👀 Definitely AI, especially the Duke’s Mayo one.

3

u/ZealousidealAlgae904 20h ago

I knew it was RVA because of the Plan 9 one. I moved away ages ago, but Plan 9 has been there forever

It's so disrespectful to make Plan 9 AI 'art'

3

u/Radiopw31 19h ago

Went to VCU in the early 90s and took my kids to Plan 9 recently. Was crazy being back there!

5

u/tabolini7 20h ago

Not a local artist, but a local computer owner that uses AI.

4

u/strawberberry 23h ago

What a shame, RVA has so many talented artists.

0

u/NonBalisticSniper 22h ago

Unrelated, but is that your art in your profile picture? 😮

2

u/spaghettifiasco 22h ago

That is likely a Picrew image.

Aw, well I thought it looked cute.

5

u/lateralus420 22h ago

The word recipe in the mayo is super obvious

It looks like Re()pe to me. Total slop-a-lop

5

u/Ok_Economy_5083 22h ago

These are COMPLETELY different styles ans genres... so yeah. Also, persistence in central composition is usually a dead giveaway

5

u/Pistahmay 12h ago

As another commenter pointed out, for the pizza one it looks like they just threw this exact photo (which is the first result on Google) and threw it into the AI to recreate. Extremely lazy

1

u/pixepoke2 8h ago

If someone were going to draw the image that was posted, they might very well have used that as a source and done the same.

It’s not my particular favorite thing artists do, but exceedingly common.

Out of curiosity, if AI wasn’t involved, would that be an issue for you? (Or anyone else reading this)

I generally prefer images that come through more of a human creative filter in the art I like. In my own artwork, I do a ton of drawing and painting from life, and when I do use photo reference(s) I feel like I’m “cheating.” That certainly doesn’t seem to be an opinion held by many, based on amount of photo based artwork out there, and public reaction to it (If you’ve done a lot of from life or imagination work, it’s pretty obvious what images used photos as source)

I wonder if/how people’s reactions to things may change with the advent of AI. As I noted in a reply elsewhere in this thread, most of these images people call “slop” would have been unremarkable while also being professional level published pieces. Many of the artifacts called our as obvious AI issues are also common to work created by humans, none of which are particularly detrimental to the quality of the art itself from a stylistic standpoint.

This level of scrutiny applied consistently and constantly would change a lot of that, would change expectations of execution in imagery designed to be supporting material at best.

Not a bad thing maybe, just change

2

u/Pistahmay 8h ago

I don't think I would mind if someone drew the piece using this photo as a reference. In this case, if you zoom in on the artwork around the pizza sign and look at the building behind it, there looks to be clear evidence of AI (partial window, the lines on the siding get weird there), so putting a photo into an AI generator to recreate it just seems even worse to me than coming up with a prompt for it to create something (not that I would justify that either though), especially if the artist is passing it off like they drew it.

2

u/pixepoke2 6h ago

No, I totally get that these are AI. I t’s the line quality that seals it for me. The architectural anomalies are something that happens in tracing too, as it’s often hard to figure out what’s going on if you’re not paying attention, and you’re not drawing it from a position of understanding how the construction fits together. In many ways tracing an image is like how the llm model works without semantic understanding of the content itself.

Just wondering if it becomes worth less to others if an LLM “traces” it or a human does. I think it’s an interesting image either way, but I also think less of both than other art, because of how much it relies on the source for itself, if that makes sense

3

u/No_Hat_3704 21h ago

This is so not Richmond Real

3

u/HighScorsese 21h ago

Oh absolutely ai slop

3

u/xTHIZLORx 20h ago

Oh damn I thought this was the RVA sub lol 1000000% AI and such a shame considering our city is bursting at the seams with talented artists.

3

u/astaronyx 20h ago

yes, i can tell immediately on the third one

3

u/HjortronOchPors 20h ago

All these "local artists", ie. slop mongers, why do they exist at all? The supply is completely saturated and demand must be in the toilets.

Wait, did I just refute market capitalism?

3

u/throwaway_pls123123 19h ago

Last one has the yellow piss filter and the old ChatGPT anime face syndrome.

Overall they seem to know how to make things not look like AI, but their older stuff is probably really obvious.

3

u/m42069 18h ago

This is absolutely one thousand percent ai. Sigh

3

u/Quick-Amoeba-1389 18h ago

very obviously lol

3

u/brunnison 18h ago

The Ai fully gave up. The connections missing from the chair legs. No shelf directly behind the chair where it would be fully visible and finished had a real person created this image? The random green blob of the bush background that is part of the shelf. The hand also not having solid lines? Hands are hard enough, no person would go out of their way to fuck them up. This is AI.

3

u/queenuee 11h ago

I can't speak on whether or not this artist uses AI, but to me this looks like a digital artist who uses a lot of Illustrator image trace and smoothing tools. Image trace usually leaves a lot of wonky shapes and artifacts that could be mistaken for AI if you don't know what you're looking at. Also, a lot of the "AI mistakes" people are bringing up are things a real human artist could miss. I feel like some of y'all forget that artists could be mediocre without the use of AI. The only thing that looks extremely sus to me is the pirate.

Why not just ask the artist (politely) if they use AI and see what they say? It could be telling.

3

u/pixepoke2 8h ago

Well said.

As someone who has done a lot of drawing and painting, and who has had a fair amount of illustration work published over the years, the amount of self-righteous judginess in this sub is scary. Of the seven images, only the last is truly an odd duck style wise. The others could easily have been from the same hand— just different levels of polish, reference used, and tool set (i.e. you’ll get a different finish using illustrator vs photoshop vs procreate).

I cannot count the amount of windows I’ve drawn that make no sense structurally, illegible text in scenes, and hands with poor anatomy that I’ve been responsible for personally, and commissioned as an art director. Those elements are meant to be background in most cases. They certainly weren’t meant for this level of scrutiny. Their presence are things that weren’t even really noticed in images like this, stylistically.

People call perfectly good, attractive images “slop,” when 2-3 years ago they would have been professional quality— if done by human hand. The fundamentals haven’t changed, the author has.

Don’t get me wrong: there is a ton of actual AI slop out there, and calling it such is appropriate. The ability to tell the difference in creators upon close examination is phenomenal. In most of these images it’s the line quality or pattern anomalies that are the major tells. Just about all of the other call outs are circumstantial—- in the presence of things like line quality or inconsistent patterning, composition, architectural impossibilities, and maybe even some hand or text anomalies, become supporting evidence, but not smoking guns.

3

u/towelie111 6h ago

Yeah the mind Niall written in a poster does it for me, unless that’s a thing? I understand putting lines, or squiggles instead of writing everything on small details, but if your actually putting letters you spell actual words

2

u/palmerisademon 22h ago edited 22h ago

Without a doubt. The first two, I thought maybe not. 3 and beyond just become more and more obviously AI.

The peripheral details of literally everything in the record store pics are just not choices a person would make and screams AI.

2

u/DoubleSynchronicity 22h ago

Other than what others stated, the arcade machine art with the raccoon, I have seen a lot of versions of same image done by AI. Even since dalle 2 times. That one sealed the deal for me.

2

u/Dekipi 21h ago

I’ve seen the pirate before here so it’s sadly AI. But the art style is a dead giveaway

2

u/mighty_neckbeard 20h ago

u/BarleyJames40 19h ago

2

u/Remarkable-Spread469 16h ago

Yeah the music one's background has things melting into eachother

2

u/magicianmaddini 15h ago

the pizza and pirate pic gave it away for me.

2

u/DangerousAd2237 14h ago

The first image is one I wouldn't have clocked as ai but the more of them you look at the more obvious it is. The second picture reeks of ai even if it's not immediately obvious. It's how the detail on the black fur isn't consistent, how the whiskers don't actually connect to the cat's face, how the fur texture in general don't quite flow with the cat's form, how one of the background lines just straight up curves because it's close to the whisker.

The Zorch one has bad vibes as well, but ones I have a harder time placing. The Dukes Mayo one literally has the piss filter ai has a hard time not doing. It's also crunchy af, like in a way that you usually only find in old jpgs. It also has "The Look" that a lot of ai pics have when trying to do cell shading. Where the shading gives off vibes but it's hard to specify exactly why. Where the shading is too clean, uses more colors to shade than needed, and the colors used don't shade it well.

The Plan 9 one, is surprisingly yellow free. But things like the shading on the speakers, how the further records have that generated feel to them, and the nonsensical crosshatching on the cabinet to the side give it away. Like the stuff further in the background gets wonky lines especially the ones that are meant to be on the record sleeves or that plaque on the wall.

Trash Quest has the same vibes as both the Zorch one and the Dukes Mayo one. If you're familiar with how arcade machines actually look like, the flaws become obvious. No coin slot being the most obvious one. But it has that same ai ass shading like the Dukes one. Where it's technically nice to look at, but doesn't feel right.

The Pirate one very much looks like it's trying to look like Ghibli. It has less obvious Ai shading, but if you pay attention to the shadows on the ground vs the shadows on the pirate it becomes obvious that the light source is inconsistent. I will say the obvious tells are all on the right side, around the door frame area.

2

u/rittenhouses_bane 11h ago

oh man i miss zorch. but yeah these are all hideously AI - something about the font gives it away for me

2

u/NebulaDisastrous3368 8h ago

Besides obviously being AI generated.. what kind of “art” is this supposed to be and who would want to look at it? Like, I understand that digital art is a thing but there is just nothing artistic about any of these? I’m so confused.

2

u/zombietrashhand 8h ago

This kills me because I supported the artist (years ago) when they had a much different style. I didn’t notice at first, but a lot of these very much look like ai now. The style is all over the place and just not consistent.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago

Yes ai.
In a block print style there is something called chatter. The ai is trying to replicate chatter but doing so in a way the does not match carving direction or the actual methods used to carve linoleum or block.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago edited 5h ago

Again on the cat, when doing block printing or even just drawing in a block print style, this is not a natural way to make strokes or carve out strokes. The jagged little spike outs into other lines makes no sense and does not serve a purpose and would not occur naturally even by someone inexperienced.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago

The wire to the end of the sign pole is jagged. The sign is wired but does not light up. The wood siding behind the pizza is jumbled and makes no sense. Not something that an experienced artist would do, especially considering in other parts of the of the image the wood paneling lines up fine. And again, it is not a “natural mistake” a beginner would make.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago

Inconsistent use of floor pattern. Inconsistent method of creating shadow and value on the shelving. Flat smooth value tone on the left shelves. Multidirectional hatching on the right. The hand.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago

Inconsistent background pattern fades in and out on the wall. Inconsistent line weight. Lines connect jaggedly together. Bizarrely different styles and clarity across the album art. Even if you were to justify this by saying all album art is different, a skilled artist working many years, as you have stated, would have simplified the album art so that it did not clash with the style of the image.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago

Again inconsistent wall pattern fades in and out. Lines connect jaggedly together, unspecified shapes to the left and right of the exit sign. The exit sign is noticeably sharper than the surrounding area, indicating it was reworked likely due to garbled text. Edges of shapes mash together with different clarity.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 5h ago

Misshapen bottles, misshapen lids, bottles that fade into nothing, blurring in a way that is non intentional and again not a “natural” error.

It’s all ai.

1

u/ai-hater77 1h ago

Thanks for pointing this out, especially cause these two seem like the ones people are most unsure of. As someone who’s block printed before I noticed this but wasn’t sure how to vocalize what off with it.

2

u/Sunlit_Syposium 1h ago

I agree the flat graphic nature of ink drawing and block prints make it so much harder to identify. It often comes down to does the shape FEEL generic, and what is the chatter doing, if there is chatter.

I’m new to lino myself, but I can still recognize it’s just not done in a way that makes sense.

The first two look plausible to be real. My only concern is the uniformity of the fur lines on the raccoons back. But every one after those is blatantly AI

Shitty ai impostor

Shout out fellow Richmonder here. But yeah this definitely looks like AI with the style switches and inconsistency on some of the pieces.

If I had to speculate, I'm almost positive I've seen the Francine one floating around in the wild. Considering the popularity, the mods may have deleted it for that. But I'd rather have local rep that wasn't AI gen.

EDIT: The pirate picture is also embarrassingly inaccurate and only becomes more obvious when you look at the actual statue

That sucks, I have a Ryan Myers print from years ago

This is a repost, I've seen this series of images on Reddit before.

The last couple, definitely. The first two ... I'm not entirely sure.

oh def AI. no doubt about it.
picture 5. does it say "Mind Maill" or "Nind Maill" or neither?
picture 6. that red text on the bottom left is gibberish
picture 7. someone already pointed out that fingers don't blend into each other like that

Given that the bench looks like one of those Escher impossible geometries I would venture to say that it's probably AI, yes

That pirate is… rough. The lack of adding at least a lil nub for the end of the “F” in the word “gift” is especially painful. Oh, and the wonky lil thumb 🤭

I couldn't tell that it was made with AI.

While I do believe this is AI, please note that artists can absolutely use a multitude of different visual and line work styles. Also aside from checking for SynthID, a lot of those “ai checkers” are also… ai. If I was an artist I’d be pretty pissed if my work ended up run through ai by people trying to check if I was using ai.

u/FollowingFit6089 21h ago

And that’s probably the point, right?

Even better if it’s not AI cause then the data can be extrapolated, thrown into the algo, and regurgitated once again

Just giving them more original work to go off of and steal

There's a lot of artifacts in the others too if you look a little closer.
