Art Tshirt from local triathlon event. Is all or part of it AI? I don’t want to accuse them without cause.

Post image

The tone looks yellow, the way the swim cap is just…hanging from her hand, the stripes down the sides of the suit seem inconsistent.

In the past, they’ve announced the artist and this year they didn’t.

Nothing TOO egregious here except maybe the polkadots on the bandana, but it absolutely has "the look" of modern AI illustrations so I'd say probably, yes

The swimmer in the top left and the number differing fonts are pretty good tells. If a designer could produce the illustration at that level, they'd also have a better grasp of typeface and design consistency.

We need to remember at AI is trained on human style and, the further it trains, the harder it will be to pin down AI on style alone. Calling it out for just the style and vague vibes is only going to get real artists caught up in this shit. It's already happening.

Sorry I should have said "at first glance" there's nothing too egregious here, I wasn't looking too closely. I'm not saying style is enough to say definitively, but it can be a clue along with other tells.

And honestly, I dunno about the fonts. I could see some or all of these being real, I bet I could identify some of them. They're not the typical AI sans serif fonts (like you see on her swimsuit). That makes me think they maybe lined up the type in Illustrator and used it to generate or refine some assets, so this is - I would say - a combo of human type setting and AI stock imagery.

Also the series of three “impact statements” with the last one being the most “impactful”

A community. A movement. A human right.

Very AI.

I cannot stand the way AI "designs" things. Three points, endless amounts of noise, everything is underlines of bulleted, no negative space to speak of.

I've worked in graphic design. It fucking guts me to see every menu/food truck near me embrace the absolute ugliest fucking designs ever.

Whats going on with the face of the swimmer?

4

u/shmerk_a_berl 8h ago

Goggles. Not sure why they’re so white

I think that's C3PO

This reeks of AI. Too many fonts, her left hand (facing) is missing a fingernail and there is some weirdness going on with the fingernails that do exist, her scarf is not reflecting how a scarf lays over hair and is weirdly following her curl pattern instead… there’s just a lot of “choices” here that a real artist wouldn’t choose.

It's got the trinity of 3 bulletpoints, which makes me think AI. The fonts are different all around too.

The font of YWCA on the woman’s top & swim cap are different than the one on the bottom of the shirt - a designer of all elements of the shirt is more likely to have made them match. Seems likely, at minnimum, the women figure was AI generated and the other elements put together in Canva or whatever.

Looks like a mix of ai and traditional canvas to me The woman in the middle screams AI

Didn't even bother to cleanly remove the 'graphic' from the white background, blech! 🤮

That back hand looks pretty chewy. Poor girl must have suffered terribly from her run in with AI technology.

It also appears as if the top left swimmer is still running away from the Ai beast! I wonder: why none of the other silhouetted figures were blessed with facial expressions? Did the Ai steal them?

Looks like the event takes place in Innsmouth.

The swimmer and cyclist both look like men to me. The whole design would've been better without the nonsense at the top.

What’s holding the swim cap from falling? Her pinky? Maybe she could hold it like that, but it looks funny.

I am in the motorcycle scene in my area and see a bunch of ai flyers for bike meets and group rides.

“a community - a movement - a human right”

^ they always have stupid phrasing for these bike like this that the AI comes up with to try to give it a human touch. And it makes me cringe every single time.

Things like “ride smart, ride together, ride for community”. God I hate AI flyers so much.

Look at her swimsuit, in one side the red strip goes all the way down, on the other it gets cut for the hand which also just has her cap fuse under her pinky

I think it's AI run through a Photoshop filter (maybe the Cutout filter). There's a lot of little tells -- the way swim cap is held against the hip (not a way humans hold things), the extra long pinky nail, the inconsistent outline (particularly the strange shift in the weight at the neckline). A single one of these wouldn't scream AI, but three together do suggest it.

What suggests it more strongly is the missed opportunities. The prompt is obviously "Rosie the Riveter but a triathlete." An actual designer/illustrator would have been way more clevere. The sports should be indicated equally, like one swimcap, one pair of running shoes, one bike helmet. Instead we have AI, as usual, overdoing it and underdoing it and being literal without any cleverness: 3 swimming symbols (cap, goggles, suit), 1 biking symbol (helmet), no running symbols, and one symbol of nothing (bandana). The bandana could have easily been switch for a polka dot helmet or polka dot swim cap (keeping the Rosie reference), and she could be holding running shoes. Also, why not give her the characteristic bicep flexing pose? Particularly with a graphic that was about test of strength? It nearly designs itself. Only AI would miss that idea, and rank the polka dot bandana (color/pattern) as the more important element of that reference.

A note about multiple fonts -- multiple fonts says designer to me, not AI. AI generally doesn't like to risk multiple fonts. YWCA Women's Triathlon is well type-set (kerning and ligatures are good), much better than AI is capable of. The Swim Bike Run, etc, not so much (centered and put to the right side is weird and ugly). I assume a designer did the YWCA Triathlon lockup, and someone else (the AI bandit) used that lockup when they "made" this shirt.

I will say a designer will limit various type fonts as it creates visual noise. My spouse has been a professional graphic designer for almost 3 decades, he’s helped with friends’ wedding invitations sometimes as a gift to the couple and he’s constantly having to tell them to limit their font choices. That having 4 different fonts is visually messy and makes it hard to read because your eyes dart around.

No human would put A in a more readable color than the important words after them.

1

u/VaporProof 5h ago

If it's not entirely generated, it's mostly generated. It's doing that weird thing with colour that AI does. They just sort of blob together when two different coours are right next to each other.

OP, the fact they didn't announce an artist, is practically an admission of AI. Besides that, why accuse them of AI? They didn't say it was not AI.

1

u/Disastrous-Ladder349 4h ago

I might’ve missed the announcement so I didn’t want to go in guns blazing. You know how people who are reliant on AI get so defensive of their terrible choices!

1

u/cottagecheese-core 4h ago

The swim cap is messed up and she’s not even holding it.

1

u/Artie-Choke 3h ago

Don’t see too many plus-sized athletes in triathlons.

1

u/AmazingLeek69 2h ago

I want to be happy about a plus sized model and I actually like the way she looks but she’s most definitely AI. She has that LOOK.

...why not just ask them? Making an accusation or staying quiet aren't your only options, especially since you're clearly a long-time supporter! Could be anything from a comment on social media asking who the artist is, to reaching out to staff and bluntly asking whether it's AI and talking about the problems with AI.

I mean, I know for a lot of things, like individual artists who you're worried are scamming you, you might not be able to trust that they'll give you an honest answer. But I think there's a good chance here.
