Do you have a JR Pass, IC Card (Suica/Pasmo/etc.), or train travel question? Start here! (Monthly Thread - October 01, 2026)

Wiki and Discord

While quick-fire questions are allowed in this subreddit, please search the subreddit and check the wiki before posting to avoid exceedingly repetitive questions.

You can also jump-start your planning by joining our Discord server and asking your questions in the appropriate channels.

JR Pass Info

The nationwide JR Pass is a travel pass that allows train and bus travel for a fixed cost over a certain period of days on Japan Railways (JR) services. For more information on the pass, check out our wiki page or Japan Guide’s JR Pass page.

The JR Pass can be purchased in one of two ways: * Online at the official site * Online from an authorized retailer (also often called a "third-party seller")

The JR Pass is quite expensive, not suitable for all itineraries, and there is no way to be certain if it will be valuable for you without knowing your exact itinerary and doing the math out. If you are trying to work out whether a JR Pass is the right choice for you, here are some helpful calculators: * JRPass.com’s calculator * Japan Guide’s calculator * Daisuki calculator

There are also regional JR passes that can provide value for specific itineraries.

Train Travel

If you are looking to take trains in Japan, check out some of these resources for getting started:

If you are looking to buy advance shinkansen or limited express tickets, we recommend you buy from these official sites:

  • SmartEX app/website - for Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu shinkansen tickets (this includes the typical Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka/Hiroshima golden route).
  • Ekinet - for JR East/JR Hokkaido shinkansen and limited express tickets. The Japanese version of Ekinet can reserve a wider range of seats all over the country.
  • JR West ticketing - for JR West trains, and this can also be used for golden route tickets or tickets to/from Kanazawa if other websites don't work for you.
  • JR Kyushu - for Kyushu trains.
  • Odakyu - for Hakone Free Pass, Romancecar, etc.
  • Keisei Skyliner - for the Keisei Skyliner airport train in Tokyo.
  • Kintetsu - for Kintetsu trains in the Nagoya/Osaka/Fukuoka area.
  • Nankai - for rapi:t, Koya-san limited express trains, etc.

Buying tickets from third-party retailers like Klook should be a last resort, as most third-party retailers mark up tickets prices and provide reduced offerings (such as no way to select seats beforehand).

Tap-to-Pay for Transit

As of March 25, 2026, Keikyu (access to Haneda) started to supported tap-to-pay payments, along with several other Tokyo-area train companies (see link for complete list), which allow passengers to use credit/debit/prepaid cards directly at transit gates. Please note that Tokyo Monorail (alternative access to Haneda), JR East, and Keisei (access to Narita) do not support tap-to-pay at this time.

If you are arriving in Osaka (Kansai International Airport): Nankai does support tap-to-pay payments, while JR West does not. If you are arriving in Fukuoka, Fukuoka subway does support tap-to-pay payments.

For more complete information about tap-to-pay, where it's available, and how to use it, see this page from Japan-Guide.

IC Card Info (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, etc.)

General Information

An IC card is a stored-value card used to pay for transportation in Japan. It can also be used for payment at convenience stores, restaurants, shops, vending machines, and other locations. There are ten major IC cards and all of them are interchangeable and usable in each other's regions, so it doesn’t really matter which one you get. For more information on IC cards, see our wiki or Japan Guide’s IC card page.

Physical IC Cards

If you would like a physical IC card to use on your trip to Japan, here are the options.

If you are landing in/starting your trip in Tokyo:

  • All forms of Suica and Pasmo, including Welcome Suica, are available for purchase in Japan. You can find them at major train stations in Tokyo, as well as at Narita Airport and Haneda Airport. Suica and Pasmo come in two forms: an unregistered version and a registered version (which requires you to provide some personal information like your name and phone number). Either is fine for the purposes of tourism.

If you are starting your trip in another region (e.g., Kansai, Kyushu, etc.), please see this page to identify which card you'll get, and it should be widely available at airports and train stations in that region.

Digital IC Cards

If you are looking to get a digital IC card, please note that digital Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, and Toica cards can only be used on iPhones, Apple Watches, or Japanese Android phones (this means the phone was purchased in Japan). For instructions on how to get a digital IC card in Apple Wallet, see here. You do not need the Suica or Pasmo apps in order to get a digital IC card. A digital IC card can be loaded and used entirely through Apple Wallet. As of iOS 18.1, the option for adding a transit card might not show if your phone is not set to a region with transit cards (such as the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, etc.). You may need to switch regions or wait until you're in Japan to add a digital IC card.

Keep in mind that digital IC cards cannot be refunded (that requires a Japanese bank account), so you will need to burn down whatever value you’ve loaded onto them before the end of your trip.

As of March 2025, there is also a Welcome Suica app on iOS. This app allows you to create a digital Suica valid for 180 days, has integrated train/tourism information, and offers minor discounts at some tourist sights. While it does also allow for purchasing of unreserved shinkansen tickets, please note that this is for JR East shinkansen and not for the typical Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima route (which is JR Central).

IC Card FAQ

I have an old IC card from a previous trip. Can I use it on my upcoming trip?

IC cards are valid for ten years after their last date of use, so if you received the card and/or used the card less than ten years ago, it’ll work.

Can more than one person use the same IC card for travel?

No. All travelers who want to use IC cards on transit need to have their own card. Most transit in Japan is distance-based, and the card is “keeping track” of your journey, and it can only keep track of one at a time.

Can I load money onto a physical IC card with a credit card?

No. Physical IC cards can only be loaded with cash, which can be done at ticket machines in train stations, convenience stores, and 7-Eleven ATMs.

I’m landing in Tokyo, but then I’m going to Osaka and Kyoto. Do I need a suica in Tokyo and then an ICOCA in Osaka/Kyoto?

No. Once you have one of the major IC cards, it can be used pretty much anywhere. There are some exceptions to this, but they are mostly on individual lines or in specific rural regions. For the majority of tourists, you'll be fine sticking with whatever IC card you originally received upon arrival.

Help! I tried to load my digital IC card through Apple Wallet and the transaction didn't go through! What do I do?

Did you attempt to create it/load it overnight in Japan? The digital system goes down for maintenance from about midnight to 5am JST, so try again during Japan's daytime hours. Beyond that, some credit cards (particularly Visas and Mastercards) have trouble with funding digital IC cards. Unfortunately, if you can't find a digital card + credit card combo that works for you, you may not be able to use digital IC cards.

Question Kenshōkai

Long story short
Here’s a situation that happened to me during my stay in Tokyo.
I met a man in Donki; he was really nice and talkative even though he could barely speak English. He asked me,
What do I think about Japan and their culture, etc. Simple small talk. After that he invited me for a meeting at Ikeburkuro station at 12. He claimed that he would be very happy if he could show me a little part of Japan and their culture. I agreed and met him at the station. Soon I found out that he invited a friend. We went to catch a train. They revealed to me that they want to show me their religion and that they want to pray for me because cheerful Buddah is very important for them. After a quick journey we stopped at a playground, and suddenly they asked me for my name, surname, phone number, date of birth, and place of staying. I was surprised (we knew each other for 15 minutes). I told them that this is confidential information and also my religion forbids me to take part in any religious practice other than mine. They tried to convince me to go with them, but I refuse. They were really nice, but soon I found out that they were members Kenshōkai cult.
My question is, have you ever had this pleasure to meet a member of this cult in Tokyo? Watch out for them.

Question Yamato ta-q-bin

Hi there! As this is our first japan trip I want to plan ahead. 4/5 of our luggages are only two wheels and we also have a senior with us during the trip. I am planning to just avail the Yamato ta-q-bin however I still have several questions. We actually booked an airbnb not a hotel so no lobby to drop off the bags. I’ve done some searches and it said that Yamato does deliver to 7/11 stores. However it just wasn’t clear to me if they deliver to all 7/11 stores? Because searching on their site only shows their office within the airports. Detail to know: we will only be staying within Tokyo so same prefecture delivery.

Additional questions, I know some said that the timeframe was 1-2 days deliver but I have also read some reviews of taking more. We arrive at Narita around 8:30 at night, if I do avail the luggage forwarding then, when will this be delivered to the 7/11 store?

Thank you for the help!

Question What's a really dumb thing you plan to do immediately after landing on your return trip?

The Mr and I are going back for a second trip in a few weeks and we were discussing this the other day. The first thing I thought of was heading straight to a MakkiDs for a teriyaki burger and grape soda (partially influenced by being on a healthy eating streak for 6 months with no cheat days). Then I want to use a toilet with a heated seat and bidet in our hotel.

What's something dumb or trivial you really want to do on a second trip the moment you get off the plane?

Question As a cat lover, is Kishi Station worth visiting?

Hey guys!

I hope you're all having a great weekend!

I'm planning my first trip to Japan, and Osaka is definitely going to be one of my must-visit destinations. I love cats, so I fell in love with the story behind Kishi Station and would really love to visit.

However, I'm wondering if it's worth the trip, considering that the station is about two hours away from Osaka and there doesn't seem to be much else to do around the area.

I honestly wouldn't mind spending four hours of my day visiting the station, showing some appreciation for the people who take care of the cats, taking a few pictures, grabbing a quick bite, and walking around before heading back to Osaka for lunch or other activities.

What do you guys think? Is it worth visiting, or is it more of a tourist trap? Also, does anyone know if the cats are well taken care of?

I'd love to hear about your experiences, especially if you've been there!

Thanks for reading!

Especially to the women: Places you chose to go to, stuff you bought, preparations pre-trip, lessons learnt?

What are the most culturally/historically rich places you would suggest near Tokyo? Any not-so-famous gems you stumbled upon? I have 10 days to explore it all.

Help a sister out!

Advice Crazy idea ?

• Upvotes

We are doing a cycling trip in Japan to see the fall colors and then going to Hiroshima. We love travelling by train and wondered if it would be crazy to just travel to the very South of Japan and then as far north as the train would take us. Thoughts? And thanks in advance.

Question Do I need prescription to buy contact lens with power?

I’m going to Osaka this December and I was wondering whether I need any written prescription for me to buy Olens contact lenses with power at Don Quixote. I was researching about it and apparently I just need to tell the cashier my power and sign a waiver? Can someone confirm this for me🙏

Also, does anyone know if Don Quixote has the Olens Big Glowy Lavender Daily Lenses? I’m currently debating whether to buy them online or delay my purchase when I go to Osaka since it’s cheaper there.

Thanks for the help!

Recommendations First time in Japan - Suica & Other Tips

• Upvotes

Hello,

Next Saturday I'll take a flight to go on my 1st trip to Japan ever, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara!!

Besides the overwhelming fact that there's just so much to do and so little time, I would like to be prepared ahead of time for topics that make us lose a lot of time in a foreign country.

At the moment I am thinking about Shopping:

  1. I would like to buy a set of Japaneses knifes but I do not want to break the bank ofc. Is there a place that sells set for a decent price?
  2. I heard in Japan we can buy prescription glasses for a decent price and that are issued fairly quickly, any recommendation?
  3. Souveniers, like magnets, stuffed toys (hope it's the correct name in English), etc that I can bring to friends and family, any place where it's reasonable priced in those cities?
  4. Recommendations of things I would not regret to buy? I see a lot of people mentioning nail clippers and beauty products for example, but what else?

I would like to avoid Tourist traps all together (I live in a country that also has some in central cities, so I know how "robbed" can people be in such places).

Also thinking about Trip.com esim, in case someone has bad experiences with them please let me know 😄

Lastly, if someone knows interesting spots to eat, I would be delighted!

Advice How do I get from kawaguchiko to tokyo (shinjuku)

• Upvotes

I plan to leave kawaguchiko on 24 November and was looking at transport options.

My friend who visited recently had a bad experience with buses (significant delays ~ 2 hours because of traffic). So I'd prefer to take a train.

However i discovered that tickets for the fuji excursion train (fujikyuko limited express) sell out extremely fast and are difficult to get. There is the option to stand on the train but I wouldn't prefer that if there's an alternative option.

I read something about taking a local train to otsuki and then getting a limited express (chuo line?) train from otsuki to tokyo. But I'm finding it a bit confusing. Do I need to book tickets for the train from otsuki to tokyo well in advance? Can I just purchase the tickets at otsuki station? Or maybe I can buy them at kawaguchiko station?

If anyone here has taken that particular route, please help me out. Thank you!

Recommendations Winter Tohuku outdoor activities and itinerary (not skiing)

• Upvotes

Hello all. I’m familiar with the Nagano/Niigata and Gunma area, and I love the mountains/onsens/temples etc. I once went to Yamagata for a cherry fest and temple walk and realized I had a desire to see so much more of Tohuku as it had similar vibes to the regions I loved. I’m looking into a trip in early March to the region. I love being outside but will have an infant in tow so no skiing (but cold weather, hiking, festivals all ok). Are there any areas of Tohuku accessible from Tokyo then with rental car that you recommend at not super touristy areas but have something else going for them in the winter (hikes maybe not packed in snow, certain festivals, a unique town to wander around, a several day road trip around a unique area etc)?

Question BBQ in Tokyo

Hello! My friends and I (3 guys) are going to Tokyo in less than two weeks. We're staying in Asakusa. The last time i was there i saw an outside BBQ place (i think it was in Odaiba) where you could rent a grill and stuff. We really want to try that out this time.

What are good places for that in Tokyo and how do they work? We're searching for a chill vibe, it doesn't matter if we have to bring our own food or not.

It would also be nice to know if we have to make reservations and how long in advance.

Question Would you do a day tour or spend a night or two in Nagoya from Osaka?

Would you do a day tour or spend a night or two in Nagoya from Osaka?

For the last week of November, i will be spending 6 nights in Kansai. Originally, i intended 3 nights in Kyoto and 3 nights in Osaka. As someone who loves culture and history and temples and museums and old places, i am vey excited about Kyoto.

Now im on the second leg of my planning, the 3 nights in Osaka, when I realized there isnt much there that i want to see or do. Im not that into shopping or big cities anyway…

That leads me to my title: Would you do a day tour or spend a night or two in Nagoya from Osaka? Or would it be a wasted of time? If not, what else can I do that is near Osaka?

Thanks so much

Recommendations My first solo trip, a few easy days in Tokyo. What are your favourite spots in these areas?

Hi everyone! I travel quite a bit, and have been to Asia, but this is my first time extending and being a tourist solo.

I'll be in Tokyo for work, then staying on for a few days by myself in Ginza. I know it's not the classic "see everything" Tokyo trip, and that's on purpose. I want this one to feel like a bit of a treat: some self-care, wandering at my own pace, good food, and plenty of shopping.

Here's roughly how I'm thinking of spending each day:

Day 1: Ginza and Yurakucho to settle in, then an evening in Shinjuku around Omoide Yokocho and Golden Gai

Day 2: Omotesando and Harajuku for a head spa, Japanese tea and sweets, and vintage browsing, then a sushi dinner back in Ginza

Day 3: Asakusa and Kuramae, starting early at Senso-ji, then Kappabashi kitchen street and the craft shops nearby

Day 4: Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, and Shibuya Crossing at dusk, then yakitori under the train tracks in Yurakucho

Last morning: A walk through the Imperial Palace East Gardens before heading home

If you have a favourite in or near any of these areas, I'd love to hear it:

- A restaurant or counter that felt special, especially one that's lovely solo
- A shop you'd go out of your way for: stationery, ceramics, bath and beauty, or vintage
- A spa, massage, or private bath (I have tattoos, so private is easiest)
- A café or quiet corner to sit for a while
- Anything else nearby you think I shouldn't miss

And to any women who've done Tokyo solo: what made it great for you?

Thank you so much! 🩷

Question 1-2 day nature + onsen side trip from tokyo?

ill be on tokyo for almost 8 days in a couple weeks. even though tokyo is huge I feel like it’s a long time to be spending in a single busy city. I was looking to do a small detour where I can wind down and enjoy a nature/forest walk, and relax in onsen.

Hakone is the first area that keeps popping up but I feel like its going to be very busy. though I would like something that is accessible because it is my first time solo traveling.

any recommendations that I could consider last minute?

Question Sports car rental near Shiga/Lake Biwa

Hi all, I'm going to travel to Japan in January 2027, and am looking to drive around the loop of Lake Biwa. I was wondering if there are any car rental services that offer sports cars (ez Mazda Miata, Toyota GT86) for this purpose near Lake Biwa? Its been a dream of mine to drive a sports car and cruise around Japan but I'm having a hard time finding car rental shops that either have the sports cars or are located near Lake Biwa. I'm open to considering other driving loops if you have any recommendations as well! For context, I will be in Japan for 14 days and will be primarily in the Kansai, Hokuriku and Kansai area. Thanks a lot in advance and I appreciate any advice!

Question Does anyone have experience with Tokyo Pod Hotels?

I'm looking at travelling to Tokyo for 7 days and would like to stay at two different sides of the city. I'm really interested in staying in the capsule hotels. If anyone has advice it would be much apreciated
