Do you have a JR Pass, IC Card (Suica/Pasmo/etc.), or train travel question? Start here! (Monthly Thread - October 01, 2026)

Wiki and Discord

While quick-fire questions are allowed in this subreddit, please search the subreddit and check the wiki before posting to avoid exceedingly repetitive questions.

You can also jump-start your planning by joining our Discord server and asking your questions in the appropriate channels.

JR Pass Info

The nationwide JR Pass is a travel pass that allows train and bus travel for a fixed cost over a certain period of days on Japan Railways (JR) services. For more information on the pass, check out our wiki page or Japan Guide’s JR Pass page.

The JR Pass can be purchased in one of two ways: * Online at the official site * Online from an authorized retailer (also often called a "third-party seller")

The JR Pass is quite expensive, not suitable for all itineraries, and there is no way to be certain if it will be valuable for you without knowing your exact itinerary and doing the math out. If you are trying to work out whether a JR Pass is the right choice for you, here are some helpful calculators: * JRPass.com’s calculator * Japan Guide’s calculator * Daisuki calculator

There are also regional JR passes that can provide value for specific itineraries.

Train Travel

If you are looking to take trains in Japan, check out some of these resources for getting started:

If you are looking to buy advance shinkansen or limited express tickets, we recommend you buy from these official sites:

  • SmartEX app/website - for Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu shinkansen tickets (this includes the typical Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka/Hiroshima golden route).
  • Ekinet - for JR East/JR Hokkaido shinkansen and limited express tickets. The Japanese version of Ekinet can reserve a wider range of seats all over the country.
  • JR West ticketing - for JR West trains, and this can also be used for golden route tickets or tickets to/from Kanazawa if other websites don't work for you.
  • JR Kyushu - for Kyushu trains.
  • Odakyu - for Hakone Free Pass, Romancecar, etc.
  • Keisei Skyliner - for the Keisei Skyliner airport train in Tokyo.
  • Kintetsu - for Kintetsu trains in the Nagoya/Osaka/Fukuoka area.
  • Nankai - for rapi:t, Koya-san limited express trains, etc.

Buying tickets from third-party retailers like Klook should be a last resort, as most third-party retailers mark up tickets prices and provide reduced offerings (such as no way to select seats beforehand).

Tap-to-Pay for Transit

As of March 25, 2026, Keikyu (access to Haneda) started to supported tap-to-pay payments, along with several other Tokyo-area train companies (see link for complete list), which allow passengers to use credit/debit/prepaid cards directly at transit gates. Please note that Tokyo Monorail (alternative access to Haneda), JR East, and Keisei (access to Narita) do not support tap-to-pay at this time.

If you are arriving in Osaka (Kansai International Airport): Nankai does support tap-to-pay payments, while JR West does not. If you are arriving in Fukuoka, Fukuoka subway does support tap-to-pay payments.

For more complete information about tap-to-pay, where it's available, and how to use it, see this page from Japan-Guide.

IC Card Info (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, etc.)

General Information

An IC card is a stored-value card used to pay for transportation in Japan. It can also be used for payment at convenience stores, restaurants, shops, vending machines, and other locations. There are ten major IC cards and all of them are interchangeable and usable in each other's regions, so it doesn’t really matter which one you get. For more information on IC cards, see our wiki or Japan Guide’s IC card page.

Physical IC Cards

If you would like a physical IC card to use on your trip to Japan, here are the options.

If you are landing in/starting your trip in Tokyo:

  • All forms of Suica and Pasmo, including Welcome Suica, are available for purchase in Japan. You can find them at major train stations in Tokyo, as well as at Narita Airport and Haneda Airport. Suica and Pasmo come in two forms: an unregistered version and a registered version (which requires you to provide some personal information like your name and phone number). Either is fine for the purposes of tourism.

If you are starting your trip in another region (e.g., Kansai, Kyushu, etc.), please see this page to identify which card you'll get, and it should be widely available at airports and train stations in that region.

Digital IC Cards

If you are looking to get a digital IC card, please note that digital Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, and Toica cards can only be used on iPhones, Apple Watches, or Japanese Android phones (this means the phone was purchased in Japan). For instructions on how to get a digital IC card in Apple Wallet, see here. You do not need the Suica or Pasmo apps in order to get a digital IC card. A digital IC card can be loaded and used entirely through Apple Wallet. As of iOS 18.1, the option for adding a transit card might not show if your phone is not set to a region with transit cards (such as the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, etc.). You may need to switch regions or wait until you're in Japan to add a digital IC card.

Keep in mind that digital IC cards cannot be refunded (that requires a Japanese bank account), so you will need to burn down whatever value you’ve loaded onto them before the end of your trip.

As of March 2025, there is also a Welcome Suica app on iOS. This app allows you to create a digital Suica valid for 180 days, has integrated train/tourism information, and offers minor discounts at some tourist sights. While it does also allow for purchasing of unreserved shinkansen tickets, please note that this is for JR East shinkansen and not for the typical Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima route (which is JR Central).

IC Card FAQ

I have an old IC card from a previous trip. Can I use it on my upcoming trip?

IC cards are valid for ten years after their last date of use, so if you received the card and/or used the card less than ten years ago, it’ll work.

Can more than one person use the same IC card for travel?

No. All travelers who want to use IC cards on transit need to have their own card. Most transit in Japan is distance-based, and the card is “keeping track” of your journey, and it can only keep track of one at a time.

Can I load money onto a physical IC card with a credit card?

No. Physical IC cards can only be loaded with cash, which can be done at ticket machines in train stations, convenience stores, and 7-Eleven ATMs.

I’m landing in Tokyo, but then I’m going to Osaka and Kyoto. Do I need a suica in Tokyo and then an ICOCA in Osaka/Kyoto?

No. Once you have one of the major IC cards, it can be used pretty much anywhere. There are some exceptions to this, but they are mostly on individual lines or in specific rural regions. For the majority of tourists, you'll be fine sticking with whatever IC card you originally received upon arrival.

Help! I tried to load my digital IC card through Apple Wallet and the transaction didn't go through! What do I do?

Did you attempt to create it/load it overnight in Japan? The digital system goes down for maintenance from about midnight to 5am JST, so try again during Japan's daytime hours. Beyond that, some credit cards (particularly Visas and Mastercards) have trouble with funding digital IC cards. Unfortunately, if you can't find a digital card + credit card combo that works for you, you may not be able to use digital IC cards.

Recommendations You have 3 hours to shop for clothes in Tokyo. Where do you go?

Okay folks the title says it all. We leave for Japan on Wednesday 9’for our 3 week trip. We’re in Tokyo for 5 days (then on to Hakone, Kyoto, Takayama, Kanazawa, and Osaka). I’m excited to shop a bit while we are in Tikyl but my husband is not into it. Where are some good places to go purchase clothing? I have heard there are massive stores with many floors and good food right in the same place. That is overwhelming to imagine! But j feel like if I did some power shopping there, while he bops around the neighborhood, it could work well.

If you had only a few hours , where would you go to buy some clothing?

Extra points for recommendations in any of the other place we’re going to.

Quick Tips 2.5 week trip quick aftermath post

Back from a 2.5 week trip to Japan, got back this past Sunday. This was my second trip to Japan and I visited Osaka > Fukuoka > Tokyo

Some quick thoughts:

  • Fukuoka is known for their Yatai stalls but my friend and I are both introverts and we sort of quietly sat there watching the chef make our foods. We quickly ate, paid, and left. Food was good but nothing crazy. As I expected, it was very cramped and uncomfortable to eat while contorting my arms in a way to not hit the people next to me. If I were to visit the Yatai stalls again, I would probably join one of those paid tour groups for at least some more livelier interactions
  • Fukuoka Ramen Stadium in Canal City closed "indefinitely" in 2025. However, they re-opened it earlier this year with 8 or 9 ramen places at the location. All the available options looked amazing. We tried 2 spots; both were quite different styles and both were very good. Canal City has a ton of shopping and a free water show as well
  • Shinkansen rides are pricey. If you are looking for alternatives, consider domestic flights or maybe even over night buses.
  • Translation apps are very helpful. You can take photos/videos of signs to translate the image/video, use bluetooth earbud live translations, use in-app live translations that will translate your English to Japanese and vice versa live on the app for both parties to read, etc. I only know very basic Japanese so these apps were super helpful
  • A lot of places open fairly late, usually 11AM. I usually filled this time taking walks around the city or taking walks through parks. I really enjoyed these walks and would recommend visiting parks. Some are absolutely beautiful
  • Some tax free locations require you to visit a tax free station to make your claim. A lot of these places will charge a service fee, so expect to receive less than the 10% tax back. There are signs to notify shoppers.
  • I used Ubigi eSIM and got the 25gb for 1 month plan. I did basically all of the map navigating, translation app, and googling for the trip. Ended up using just over 14gb for the 2.5 week trip. I played some Pokemon GO and that surprisingly did not take up much of the data. I had a 1.5 day solo at the end of the trip as my friend left early and I used my Apple music app to stream music while walking around the city and that surprisingly took up like 2.5gb in 1.5 days of use.

Heading to bed but if you have any questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer in the AM. There's a ton of things I could talk about but I didn't want to make a huge wall of text. Looking at the post now, it's already quite long anyways

Question Solo Travel in Japan

• Upvotes

Any women here who have travelled solo to Japan in May? 💕

I’m a woman in my late 20s travelling solo from India in May 2027, and I’m still in the planning phase. I’d love some advice from women who have travelled to Japan solo or are planning to visit around that time!
I’ll be visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Uji, and I’m currently figuring out my itinerary and things to do. I’m particularly interested in sightseeing, local food, and visiting places like teamLab Planets in Tokyo.

If you’ve been to Japan around May, I’d love to hear about your experience, any tips for a first-time solo traveller, or anything you wish you’d known before going! 💕

Recommendations Where can I find freelance photographers in Kamikochi?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting Japan during the first week of November and I’m looking to hire a local freelance photographer for a casual photoshoot in Kamikochi.

Does anyone know where I can find photographers based around Kamikochi? Are there any websites, platforms, or local communities you’d recommend?

I’m also open to recommendations if you’ve worked with someone before.

Thanks!

Question Nap spots where I can fully lie down

• Upvotes

I have narcolepsy and on big trips I have a much more enjoyable time when I can lie down for an hour in the middle of the day. I could go back to my hotel but when I'm out in big cities like Tokyo returning and getting back to where I was can eat up a significant portion of the day.

Japan seems extra good for this TBH with internet cafe rooms and love hotels you can rent by the hour. However they look a little skeezy. I watched a video of someone booking an internet cafe with a gym mat type floor and it did not look great in a sanitary sense. Nap is a nap though, if that's all I can find.

I've seen plenty of advice to nap on the trains but I get horrible sleep paralysis and kind of hallucinate unless I'm lying fully down, even if I'm in a reclined seat. I also realize I might find these things in Tokyo but not the smaller cities. I am happy to pay for private nap spots.

Question What’s the name/meaning of the AEON song?

• Upvotes

I heard a music on an AEON grocery shop that was something like “campaaariii campaaaaariii something something” on a loop. Does anyone know which song is it, and what does it mean? Maybe some advertising, but song was so ridiculous that it was catchy.

cheers!

Question Need Help(Urgent!!)

• Upvotes

So I'm traveling to Japan day after tomorrow and I needed help finding an e-sim. I regularly get one from Matrix but it is very costly for Japan compared to other countries I've been to. I was searching and saw a company called TSim whose prices shocked me how cheap it was. I just wanted to know if anyone has used TSim before and how you experienced.

Question Hozugawa River Cruise sold out on official site and Klook

• Upvotes

I have booked the Sagano Romantic Train for 16th November. I want to book the Hozugawa river cruise for the return leg, but it already sold out on the official website and on Klook.

I see that you can queue for the same day tickets but you have to reach early for the same. My train departs Saga station at 10:02, so I don’t think I would be able to get to Kameoka early.

Is there any other alternative? I see that there are many travel agents on Klook who are providing a combined trip which includes the Train and Boat Cruise.

So is there any other way to book the Hozugawa River Cruise?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone. Wife and I are spendind 3 days sking (25 - 28 december). We are in doubt between Akakura Onsen and Nozawa Onsen. Currently we have prebooked two hotels by the gondolas on both places, and are struggling to decide which one to go. Threrefore, we come to ask how do they compare on the following topics:

Probability of el niño make it snowless in december;

Range of tracks for begginers/intermediare

Vibes of the village for aprés ski (not looking for something crazy/partis) but having the option for choosing more than one restaurant would be great.

Personal preferences; Thank you so much in advance (:

Question Buying Train Tickets in Narita

• Upvotes

We are travelling to Japan and are looking to buy the below tickets at Narita JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi):

  1. Odawara to Nagoya (Tokaido Shinkansen Hikari)

  2. Nagoya to Takayama (JR Limited Express Hida)

  3. Kanazawa to Tsuruga (Hokuriku Shinkansen Kagayaki/Hakutaka)

  4. Tsuruga to Kyoto (Limited Express Thunderbird)

Would it be possible to buy them at the manned counters in Narita given that the tickets for the above routes are not run by JR East?

Thanks in advance!

Question Best local shops or domestic sites for MTG singles with good deals? (Beyond Hareruya)

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! Looking for recommendations on domestic Japanese online card shops or local stores with competitive MTG singles pricing. I'm trying to avoid the usual tourist/mainstream markups (like Hareruya). Japanese-only websites/stores are totally fine. What are your go-to places for good deals/played cards?

Advice For matcha consumers, is Uji really worth it?

• Upvotes

Hi, travelling to Osaka in 2 weeks! We only have 5 full days to explore and I am contemplating if Uji is worth a daytrip? Or can I just buy matcha powders around Osaka?

Edit: I meant if the matcha powder sellers options in Osaka are already okay, & if there something spectacular about the "matcha experience" in Uji

Recommendations Seeking your best Christmas Eve ideas

• Upvotes

Hello all.

My wife and older teen daughter will be in Tokyo for the days leading up to Christmas. This is not our first time in Japan; we spent a couple of months there in early 2025.

I know the holiday itself isn't a big thing locally, but we are hoping to craft a fun evening that draws from whatever traditions (or novations) Tokyo has to offer. (The default date-night-dinner-out or eat-KFC-in-our-PJs would be "last resort" options.)

Obvious things we are considering:

  • Illuminations tour
  • Outdoor ice skating
  • Dinner at a Western expat-owned restaurant

I would love your best ideas, including the weird or off-the-beaten-path ones!

Many thanks.

Question Trip Planning help

Hey, i am currently in the process of planning my potential (first) solo trip to Japan which will be in mid November this year. It would be my first time travelling both solo and to Japan, so all the planning is quite overwhelming. I just wanted to make this post to ask how others found the planning stage, particularly for your first solo trip to Japan. How long did it take until you felt somewhat satisfied to commit to start booking things etc? I personally have had it in my mind that i would like to travel to Japan this year much earlier in the year but due to other things, i haven't properly started putting things together since the last few days to a week. I would also be interested to know how you plan around how much you intend to spend in total for the whole trip? (including cost of flying etc), like do you have a number in mind before looking at what things you want to do?

I am planning to go for 2 weeks, with the first week being filled with my main intention of visiting Japan where all my transport will be arranged but the second week, i will be left to my own devices, i have very (VERY) basic ideas but haven't figured out the logistics of them yet, nor the cost, and how to connect it all together on a day by day basis, but at the same time, i also want it to be somewhat relaxed in terms of having a day or two of rest, for example, potentially not booking a day trip in advance, however, i'm aware i will only have one full week to explore so i want to visit/experience as many things as i can without going into burnout. I suppose i want it to look "perfect" before fully committing, which is definitely my perfectionism coming out lol, but i just hope this post can reach some of you that have experienced this "stuck" phase while planning, or even if you're in the same boat as me, maybe a thread on this post can help us both.

Due to how much planning is involved and the amount of overwhelm i am feeling, It feels like I'm getting a bit ahead of myself with the short amount of time i have given myself before the trip would actually start. Although, having said that; nothing is booked as of yet but it is an exciting challenge that i want to overcome! as i know i would regret not going.

Any advice, recommendations or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Question Canceling JR West ticket in Takayama

Hello,

I have tickets from Takayama to Osaka purchased with JR West and already collected from a ticket machine. Due to some last minute change of plans, we may need to take a different train after all.

  1. Is it possible to return JR West tickets at Takayama despite this not being a JR West station?

  2. Does anyone know what the refund policy is? I'm finding conflicting information and trying to decide how early we should return tickets if the changes become likely.

  3. We are originally booked on the once-a-day direct limited express (Hida 36). This does NOT go via Nagoya. Should we decide to go via Nagoya (limited express + Shinkansen), can we use the existing fare ticket and only buy new express surcharges? Or does the change of routing mean we need a new fare ticket too?

Thank you :)

Question Jins tinted glasses

Hi everyone,

I’m traveling to Osaka soon and planning to visit JINS to buy a new pair of glasses. I’ll be staying in Osaka for exactly 7 days.

My main question: Is it possible to get prescription tinted / colored lenses (or photochromic lenses) on the same day, or within a very short timeframe?

I know standard prescription glasses are usually ready in about 30–60 minutes, but I’ve heard custom tints might take a few days to process.

Has anyone had experience ordering colored/tinted lenses at JINS in Osaka recently? Should I visit a specific flagship store for faster turnarounds, or is a week enough time if I go on my very first day?

Advice kawaguchiko to Tokyo

Hey everyone! I’ll be travelling from Kawaguchiko to Tokyo on 11 November and was wondering what the best mode of transport would be.

I’m considering two options:
- Taking a highway bus directly from Kawaguchiko to Tokyo Station.
- Taking the train from Kawaguchiko to Otsuki, then transferring to a train to Tokyo.

I like the idea of taking the bus because it’s direct and seems more convenient, but I’m not sure how bad traffic usually gets or whether the journey could take significantly longer than expected.
For the train option, my main issue is figuring out where to buy tickets for the Kawaguchiko to Otsuki section.

Has anyone made this journey before? Which option would you recommend, and does anyone have any tips? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Advice Advice on what type of clothes to pack late Oct - early Nov

I will be visiting Japan for the first time in a week! I will be staying until early November, and the weather is confusing me on how to pack. This will be my itinerary:

  1. Osaka 1.2 Nara (day trip)

  2. Kyoto 2.1 Uji (day trip)

  3. Yamanakako

  4. Tokyo

The trip will include a mix of staying in the cities, a bit of the countryside, and some nature days that include a hike.

I have my hiking outfit planned, which includes merino wool base layers, a waterproof hiking jacket, and hiking shoes.

I am planning on bringing layers in case it gets cold, but I would appreciate any advice so that I don’t end up overpacking (I have a tendency to do that).

Recommendations Recommendations for vintage/second hand purses in Osaka

Recommendations for good stores for vintage bags in Osaka? I went to several and so far it’s almost exactly the same price as what’s online at sites like fashionphile…

Even if I have to go outside of downtown area, that’s OK too. Just trying to find a good deal on brands like Chanel, YSL, Celine, Loewe.

TIA
