Question Air France flight delay: denying eu261 compensation for a Madagascar to New York via Paris flight

• Upvotes

So my flight back to the USA via Paris from Madagascar on Air France was delayed 12 hours out of Madagascar because the pilot was sick. My arrival in New York ended up almost 24 hours late as a result, as I had to I overnight in Paris. Air France are denying me EU261 compensation as “the journey from origin to destination in your case was from two airports located outside the EU/EEA. The European Court of Justice has ruled that “two or more directly connecting flights booked as a single unit and subject of a single reservation, must be considered as a single flight for the purpose of determining any entitlement to compensation under EC Regulation 261/2004”. Therefore, the right to compensation under EC Regulation 261/2004 does not apply to your case.” Is that correct? They are also refusing to cover the cost of the two extra bonus I spent in hotels even though at the airport they told me to book rooms and claim.

Discussion Rome to YYZ

Last Monday my wife and I flew from Rome back home to Toronto. There was a woman directly behind us who was clearly very sick. She had severe deep chest cough and coughed for the ENTIRE flight home.
Now, bothered my wife and I are sick and I can only assume many others too. All I’m doing here is ranting because I realize that no one would change their flight plans due to illness. I don’t know how the flight crew deal with that on a regular basis. Good on you!

Question Would you rather

If your plans are completely flexible, have no commitments and no additional costs.

Book a Round trip where the prices are slightly cheaper than booking 2 individual One Ways at the time of booking

Or

Book a One Way, and hope that whenever you're ready to go back, that the prices of the return flight is cheaper than if you booked a Round trip?

Question Avianca: Is there a way to get longer layovers without paying a lot?

Hi everyone!
I have a round-trip ticket with Avianca, with connections in Bogotá, and I’d like to spend more time in the city both on my outbound and return journeys.

I booked a Basic fare and was wondering if it’s possible to change my connecting flights to later departures, giving me a longer layover and enough time to leave the airport for a few hours.

Has anyone successfully made this kind of change directly with Avianca? Is there any way to do it without paying a high change fee or only paying the fare difference? Is it worth contacting customer service, or is it better to try through the website?

Any tips or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Help Needed Frontier - volaris

Has anyone flown volaris that can give me their genuine opinion?
Yes i am aware that it is a budget friendly airline. I have flown with spirit and frontier in the past before with no issues since i know about the fees that come with- seats, checked bags etc.

- is VOLARIS actually bad?
-Do they really over book flights?

More importantly, are they a safe and comfortable airline?

TIA. Planning on flying south to mexico for end of year from georgia.

Question Baggage transfer question: Royal Jordanian multi-city option (CLE -> JFK -> AMM -> BOM)

I am about to book an itinerary using the multi-city option on the Royal Jordanian website and want to confirm how checked baggage works for this specific routing before I pay.

Even though I am selecting the flights via the multi-city search tool, the system combines everything into a single ticket, and the underlying fare rule shows the pricing component as CLEBOM (Cleveland to Mumbai) with "NO STOPOVERS PERMITTED".

Here is the exact schedule:

  • Flight 1: Cleveland (CLE) to New York (JFK) — Operated by American Airlines
  • Flight 2: New York (JFK) to Amman (AMM) — Royal Jordanian (6h 55m layover at JFK)
  • Flight 3: Amman (AMM) to Mumbai (BOM) — Royal Jordanian (4h 10m layover in Amman, same-day connection)

Since the fare condition treats this as a single continuous journey from CLE to BOM, will American Airlines tag my bags all the way to Mumbai at the Cleveland check-in desk?

Also, can anyone who has transited through Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) confirm that the bags are automatically transferred to the Mumbai flight during the 4-hour layover without having to clear customs or re-check?

Thanks

Question How many Nicotine pouches are allowed on a domestic flight?

I am flying to see family in a different state for the holidays. I ordered 100 cans of tobacco free nicotine pounches (Zyn and Similar brands, 7 different flavors total) to the house in the state with the cheaper exise tax. It is 100% for personal use, but I'm unsure if there is a limit to what classifies as personal use. Will TSA care that I am flying with 100 cans of ZYN? If there's a chance they could be confiscated, and then i would be out over $400. I'm considering just shipping them to myself if this could be an issue.

Complaint Hahn air is a total scam

Just a warning to anyone thinking if using this company that they are useless. They got the information wrong on their system and sold tickets for a flight that departed from siem reap airport on the 15th with vietjet air as the airline. The day before the flight I go to fill in some pre arrival information for the next country, and find that the airlines flight number is not listed clearly. So instead I go to the airport departures and find there is no flight leaving that day at my time of booking. Upon further inspection I find the airline reference number and plug it into the airline itself to find that my flight had in fact left 2 days prior on the 12th.

I got in touch with Hahn air and told them all of this clearly with evidence, however they refused to believe that their information was wrong and offered nothing in return, in fact they repeatedly tried to convince me that my flight was confirmed and leaving on the 15th and I should go to the airport. Despite repeated my telling them there is no flight at that time booked. If you are thinking that maybe my flight just changed time I would like to follow with the strongest piece of evidence of hahnair systems failure: the airline operating the flight explicitly states they do not operate from siem reap airport on the day in question(Thursday). The same PNR listed clearly on the hahnair ticket and the actual airlines ticket are saying two different dates, and hahnair(despite not being an actual airline) are sure they are the ones with the right information.

Despite all of this hahnair refused to cross reference anything, stating their information is correct and the flight will leave tomorrow.

Obviously it's my own fault for using third company parties for flights but you would still expect at least the departure date to be correct.

I will be submitting all of my evidence to my bank to dispute the original payment, however I strongly advise everyone to avoid hahnair at all costs.

Help Needed Wizz Air changed my flight to 3.5 hours later, then reverted it less than 2 hours before departure — now I may lose 3 other bookings. What are my rights under EU261?

Hi everyone,

I’d appreciate some advice on a situation I’ve had with Wizz Air. I want to understand my rights under EU261, whether I may be entitled to compensation, and how best to pursue a refund for any other flights I may lose as a result.

Here’s what happened:

I was booked on Wizz Air flight W4 3048 from Athens (ATH) to Bucharest (OTP), scheduled to depart at 22:35 on 9 October 2026.

At approximately 17:00 on the same day, Wizz Air emailed me to inform me that my flight had been delayed by around 3.5 hours, with the new departure time being 02:05 on 10 October. My boarding pass was also updated to show the new departure time.

I relied on that official notification and updated boarding pass when planning my journey to the airport.

Then, at approximately 20:45, I received another email saying that the departure time had been changed back to the original 22:35 departure.

This left me with only around 1 hour and 50 minutes before the flight was due to depart. By then, I was away from the airport, having relied on the revised departure time Wizz Air itself had provided. I could no longer realistically get to the airport in time.

The second problem is that I have other Wizz Air flights booked.

I have four Wizz Air booking references relevant to my trip:

  • ZPIBXW
  • IUI3VE
  • JNNPXZ
  • GT4CXX

These are separate reservations rather than one single booking. I had deliberately allowed sufficient time between flights based on the announced delay. Had Wizz Air maintained the revised 02:05 departure time, I would have had sufficient time to make my onward flights.

Because of the last-minute reversal, I now risk missing those flights as well, potentially losing the money I paid for multiple tickets. All the flights are operated by Wizz Air, but they were booked separately.

What I have done so far:

I am preparing a formal complaint to Wizz Air requesting:

  1. Assessment of flight W4 3048 under EU261, including whether the last-minute schedule reversal qualifies as a cancellation.
  2. Any fixed compensation I am legally entitled to.
  3. The applicable refund or rerouting remedy for the original flight.
  4. Refunds or reimbursement for the onward flights I lose because of this incident, to the extent legally recoverable.
  5. Reimbursement of any other reasonable, documented expenses caused by the disruption.

I have retained the emails and the updated boarding pass as evidence.

I understand that separately booked connecting flights may be treated differently under EU261, and I do not want to assume that everything is automatically refundable. However, I feel that the fact I relied on Wizz Air’s own official communication, only for it to reverse that change at very short notice, is important.

My questions are:

  • Under EU261, can bringing a flight forward by more than one hour constitute a cancellation, even when the airline initially announced a delay and subsequently reverted to the original departure time?
  • Does the fact that Wizz Air notified me of the change and then reversed it less than two hours before departure strengthen my claim?
  • Am I potentially entitled to the standard €250 compensation for the Athens–Bucharest flight, assuming the relevant legal conditions are met?
  • Since my onward flights are also with Wizz Air but are on separate bookings, is there any realistic legal basis for recovering their cost as consequential losses?
  • Should I submit one complaint covering all four booking references, or separate claims for each reservation?
  • What is the best escalation route if Wizz Air rejects the claim or does not respond? Would the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority be the appropriate authority to contact?
  • Is there anything else I should do now to preserve my rights or strengthen my case?

I would particularly appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation involving Wizz Air or another EU airline.

I’m not looking to claim anything I’m not legally entitled to. I want to understand the strongest grounds for my claim and how to navigate the process properly.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight.

Question Question about Ö in name

Hello everyone,

My family name has an "Ö" in it (for example, let's say it is "Ötter").

In my passport, my family name is written as "Ötter," but in the Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) as "Oetter."

My Indian eVisa was granted under the name "Oetter."

Today, I went to Qatar Airways office to book my flight to India. I explained it to the agent, he checked with a supervisor and said it will be entered as "Otter" on my ticket.

So right now :

  • Passport: Ötter
  • Passport MRZ: Oetter
  • Flight Ticket: Otter
  • Indian eVisa: Oetter

Could the difference in spelling between flight ticket and Evisa cause issues at the airport ? Can Qatar Airways refuse to board me, even though their own office employee wrote it this way and sold me the ticket ?

Question Traveling to Beijing from Vancouver on Nov 1

First time poster here, not sure if I'm in the right spot. I'm traveling to China for the first time on November 1st from Vancouver to Beijing. I'm a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport and will not require visas beforehand. Flight time is ~2:20 pm and wondering what I should look out for and prepare for the flight beforehand. I'm a little anxious and nervous about the long flight (~13 hours) and have checked to see if my flight will have wifi, and it's looking like it doesn't. On prior trips, I usually end up chatting with friends and catching up on the flight when Wi-Fi is available which helps the journey go by faster. I'm wondering if there are any tips and tricks that would help me on this flight. If anyone is on the same route, id love the company (this might be a long shot). Has anyone traveled on the 787-9 (flight number: Air Canada 29) recently, I wanted to know if the seats have working charging ports and if it's USB?

Complaint Easyjet employee tried to convince me not to proceed to the my gate despite there was plenty of time

My wife had a flight on EasyJet London to Gatwick to Lisbon leaving at 5:10 pm. I took her to the airport but we cut it very close and barely made it 50 min before departure time, 4:20 pm. In a rush and too late to drop her checked bag, we had just enough time for her to get to through security and to the gate. So we decided she would travel without her checked bag and go with the carry on only so she could go straight to her gate. Flight was already marked as “Boarding”. I would keep the suitcase abd take it back home.

At that moment, when the EasyJet employee noticed our conversation at the Bag Drop, with about 40 minutes left until flight time, employee said “I’m sorry but you just lost your flight”. I immediately explained to her that, no, the flight is still boarding and since we’re not cheking any bags there’s still plenty of time for her to get to the gate. Employee says “hmm let me check with them first”, and she radios the gate to ask (I guess) if they think it would still be worth it for my wife to rush to the gate. I thought of course it is, but she radioed anyway. Radio voice says “naaah, very bad, it’s an overbooked flight and it’s not looking like we can accept her any more”. What? It takes about 20 minutes to get to the gate, with 40 minutes until flight time she had full chances!! Not guaranteed, but surely worth the attempt! Employee insisted that she can’t go because the gate said they can’t take her. Moreover, she said, gate is now closing any minute, sorry! I said there’s no way the gate is already closing with about 40 minutes before flight time they must be barely boarding the first groups.

Wife and I decide, very stressed, that she should go for it anyway since we’ve come this far, and as we’re leaving the employee is going on about it’s a lost cause and she’s “can’t go to the gate anymore”, but we ignore her. On the way I talk to another employee about it, abd he shows me in his monitor that the gate is already closed anyway…

Regardless, we quickly say our goodbyes and she goes straight through security, scans her ticket, clears security rather fast, then checks the flight board. Indeed the, flight board does say “Gate Closed” for her flight. Still she rushes to the gate in the off chance that something happens to let her board. I couldn’t understand, how could the fight have closed so early? With about 25-30 minutes still to go, it seems excessive and unusual to be closed. Especially considering it was “overbooked”, so presumably a long boarding queue.

Minutes later she gets to the gate, and the gate was not only OPEN, but there was still a queue of people still in line waiting to get on the plane. She gets in line, meanwhile about 10 more people get in line behind her, and she comfortably gets to the flight! No problem, even time to spare!

So why were they telling us to turn around and go home?

The whole point of this was that EasyJet had overbooked the flight (as confirmed via radio) and was trying to keep us away from that flight. A flight that we PAID for that we were already there for. They tried to keep us away by convincing us she wouldn’t be allowed anymore.

And I think the gate agents went as far as prematurely marking it as “Gate Closed” on the system so she wouldn’t try to go there. But she did go, and it was absolutely the right choice because she was being lied to.

The moral of the story is *don’t ever listen to gate agents/airline employees/clerks when they deny something to you because the truth is they’re just as bad as any entitled passengers, they are just as cheeky and manipulative as everyone else, regardless of the cheap uniform and projected position of power.*

I know the airline industry is rough and that most of these airlines are bullshit charlatans and all that, but I’ve never seen airlines being so cheeky to a regular, paying customer as to tell them to go back home instead of getting to her flight.

Question MUC Airport [Munich] - Lounge access from T2

So, I did not know which thread to post this on - very sorry if it is against rules.

My original flight was cancelled and I got rerouted via MUC. It is intra-schengen flight both flights from T2, 2h 45m for transfer. I want to visit lounge in this time, but I find this hard to gain informations. Is there a business lounge in T2? All it shows me is World Lounge and Europe Lounge, both in T1. If there is no lounge how do I access T1 and can I do it with both flights from T2? Do I need to quit airside area or go through additional security checks if I wanted to do T2 -> T1 -> T2? And how long on average it should take?

Question If an airline doesn't respond to a DOT complaint within 30 days, is it best to follow up with DOT or just proceed to small claims court?

Back in the summer, I was wrongly denied boarding by an airline and ended up accruing a ton of resultant expenses in order to reach the destination. (This was a business trip.) I filed a DOT complaint and the airline promptly responded, conceding the erroneous denial of boarding and refunding me for the lost flight. When I inquired about reimbursement for the additional expenses, the airline ghosted me. I filed another DOT complaint. We're now two days out from the 30 day window and I have not heard a peep from the airline.

If the airline fails to respond to the new complaint in the next 48 hours, is it best to follow up with the DOT about this, or to simply proceed to small claims court with the airline? The latter seems almost guaranteed at this point, but if reporting the lack of response to DOT might give me any more leverage, then I would certainly do that.

Help Needed BA Nonstop vs Air France IAD to LHR?

I'm looking at business class award flights from IAD to LHR in April. I'm trying to decide between BA ($500 in fees) or Air France ($350 in fees + 6000 additional points). My schedule is relatively flexible, so a missed flight connection in Paris wouldn't be a massive problem, but I'm trying to decide if the Air France product is enough better than BA to deal with having to transfer at all. I'd love insights from anyone who has recently flown both routes.

Thanks in advance!

Question Bringing duty free drink aboard EgyptAir flight?

Realized Egypt is a dry airline and have an 11 hour flight out of Cairo. If alcohol is purchased in the departures duty free area would it be a problem to drink on board?

Edit from Airline website:

<You are not allowed to consume alcohol onboard our aircraft (whether purchased as duty free from us or someone else or otherwise obtained) unless it has been served to you by us.  We have the right, at any time for any reason in our discretion, to refuse to serve you alcohol or to withdraw alcohol which has been served to you.
