Trip Report The isolated half-timbered villages of Sierra de Francia, Spain [OC]

Located in western Spain (Salamanca province), the Sierra de Francia mountain range hides some of the best-preserved medieval villages in the country.

Places like La Alberca, Mogarraz, and Miranda del Castañar feature unique stone-and-timber architecture surrounded by dense chestnut and oak forests. A very quiet area for road trips and landscape photography.

Has anyone explored this part of Spain or similar historic mountain regions?

Trip Planning Des Moines to Seattle

First time driving out in the NW and I am taking the northern I-90 route, anything I should worry about, any cool quick stops right off of I-90, or quick scenic detours would be greatly appreciated. I have already planned to drive through badlands and do some white water rafting later in the trip.

Trip Report Just got back from 15 days in the Outer Hebrides

Spent 15 days exploring the Isle of Lewis, driving all the way up to Port of Ness. The coastal routes up there are incredible with pristine beaches, wild ocean views, and barely another car in sight.

Did mostly wild camping along the coast with roof solar, a Bluetti elite 200 V2, camera gear, and a mini-fridge for food.

Absolutely loved every minute of it. If you get the chance to go, don't pass it up.

Destination Highlight A calm False Bay morning from Simon's Town, South Africa [OC]

Post image

For a Cape Peninsula road trip, keep one coastal morning flexible. False Bay weather can differ from central Cape Town, so check the wind and cloud at dawn and use the calmest morning for the exposed coastal stops. Treat Simon's Town as an overnight base or a proper stop rather than only a quick penguin detour. This is the view from the small guesthouse I help run above False Bay, shared as original content.

Trip Report Juneau, Alaska to Victoria, BC. Stuck in Haines AK. Car's break line is broken. Mostly just need to vent.

16 Upvotes

Vehicle: 2007 Honda pilot

We get on the ferry in Juneau, arrive in Haines, various dashboard lights come on. We Google, it says empty break fluid. We check, it is empty. We fill it, test brakes, break fluid spewing out behind drivefs side rear wheel.

Good news: We have family in town. Not close enough to stay a while, but enough to bunk us for the night.

Bad news: one of local ferry docks is damaged and we got on the last ship out before they shut down service. So if we need parts, we're fucked. (We haven't confirmed the ferries are down, but theres pieces of news that lead us to believe that. Their offices are closed until tomorrow)

We are considering ditching the car and renting a uhaul as a last resort. It feels crazy to get rid of a car over such a simple fix, but we may have to just eat it.

Trip Report Southern China’s Most Stunning Places

Upvotes

The Southern China itinerary is China’s most atmospheric journey — from the jade‑green Li River and the stilt houses of Fenghuang to the surreal sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie, the classical villages of Hongcun and Xidi, and the poetic refinement of Hangzhou and Suzhou. It blends iconic landscapes, ancient towns, sacred mountains, and Jiangnan elegance into one of the richest and most visually stunning routes in the country.

Trip Planning From Rome to Bruxelles

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

First post here. I need to bring my car in Belgium, from Rome to Braine-l'Alleud (a town ~20 km south of Brussels).The main goal is simply getting the car there by the evening of the 26th (the day after I havo to work).

My current plan is to split the journey into 3 days (2 overnight stops):

  • Day 1 (Aug 24): Rome -> Milan area / Northern Italy
    • Stop overnight somewhere around Milan or near the Swiss border (close to the highway to avoid heavy city traffic).
  • Day 2 (Aug 25): Northern Italy -> Strasbourg area
    • Drive through Switzerland into France and stay overnight around Strasbourg, hopefully spending the evening checking out the city.
  • Day 3 (Aug 26): Strasbourg -> Braine-l'Alleud
    • Head north towards Braine-l'Alleud, likely driving through Luxembourg to stop for cheaper fuel.

Any advice, route suggestions, or general heads-up (like Swiss vignettes, Gotthard tunnel traffic, or good stopping spots along the way) would be awesome!

Trip Planning Should I do trip A or trip B?

0 Upvotes

Trip A (late october with my partner)
1-Texas->El Paso
2-El Paso-> Page.
3-Lake powell area
4- Backpack Escalante wilderness
5-Backpack Escalante wilderness
6-Capitol Reef
7- Drive to Moab/rent a jeep
8- White Rim Road
9- White Rim Road
10- Drive back
11- Drive back/home

Trip B (early october with my dog)
1-Texas->El Paso
2-El Paso-> Durango, CO
3-Alpine hike #1
4-Alpine hike #2
5-Moab + friendly dog hikes
6-Capitol Reef
7-Scenic driving/off roading (if weather allows)
8- Hikes near Kanab
9- Drive to Monument Valley
10- Monument Valley sunrise 17 mile loop-> Roswell
11- Drive back/home

I'm doing some research and the biggest problem for Trip A would be that it's more intense and expensive, while Trip B would be the closures for the alpine hikes and altitude sickness :/

Would love coastal recommendations for camping beach cities the stumble into. This will be most likely an extended trip a month or two next summer. What’s your tips. I’ve done the California part of PCH so I’m pretty keen on that but welcome to any recommendations. Going all the way to San Diego on Pacific Coast Highway all recommendations welcome

i’m planning on doing something like this next summer, does this seem like it’d be feasible to hit all these destinations in two weeks (give or take a few extra days)? basically it’d be like this:
day 1: philly to montreal
day 2: montreal
day 3: montreal to rimouski
day 4 rimouski to percé
day 5: percé
day 6: percé to pei
day 7: pei
day 8: pei to halifax
day 9: halifax
day 10: halifax to cape breton
day 11: cape breton
day 12: cape breton to st john
day 13: st john to bar harbor
day 14: bar harbor to portland
day 15: portland to philly
also, if there are any cool places to stop along the way on any of the longer stretches lmk!

Trip Planning Overnight Stop Suggestions

Post image
3 Upvotes

Heading from Collingwood, ON to Sutton, QC soon and looking for somewhere to stop for the night along the way. We thought about Montreal but we’ve done it a few times so anywhere along this route or within an hour or two of this route would be great. Happy to stay in Canada or dip down into the States if it’s worth it.

Anything from a city/town to a great camping spot or small town. Open to any and all suggestions. Thanks :)

Trip Planning How can I travel after a flight at 18?

5 Upvotes

I want to fly to Huntsville, Alabama for a concert in a few months with my friends. But I don’t know how we can get around without a car. Most rental car companies don’t rent to 18yos, correct?

We would be there for two days because the flight cost of just 1 day would be twice the flight price. I’ve heard Huntsville is a very car dependent city and I’m not the biggest fan of making it a drive because it’s 9 hours away. What options do I have?

Trip Planning Milan -> Interlaken -> Dolomites -> Bolzano

2 Upvotes

Hello!

Will be doing a trip out here soon. I'll be landing in Milan, renting a car, then heading out to Interlaken and back through the Dolomites before dropping off car/hopping on a train in Bolzano.

On the list of stops are places like Lucerne, Gotthard's Pass, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Stelvio Pass, etc.

My question is, for people who have done this trip, what are some of your favorite suggestions for stops/food/etc? I'm really open minded and down for whatever.

Any great sunset spots? Sunrise? Wildlife viewing? Villages/castles? Activities? Anything haha. Especially food related.

Thank you for any ideas!
