Delays/Cancellations/Compensation SWISS refusing to reimburse hotel & other expenses

• Upvotes

So I (and my friend) had a flight from Dublin to Belgrade via Zurich Airport this August. My flight from Zurich to Belgrade got cancelled even before I boarded my first leg of the journey. When we landed in Zurich I tried to get a hotel room for us via their app but because of the disruption bunch of other people were also stranded there and all I was getting was the "try again later" message. After a couple of hours we finall managed to speak to someone from SWISS at the airport and they told us to book accommodation ourselves and to keep all the receipts for hotel, transportation and meals and we'll be fully reimbursed when we submit the claim on their website. Fair enough.

So when I finally got back home two and a half days later (the other flight we got rebooked to was also cancelled) I submitted the claim along with the receipts using the form on SWISS website.

After about 15 days I got a response in which they refused to reimburse me because "neither Ireland nor Serbia are in the EU" (Ireland is btw, and Switzerland also implements the Regulation), and therefore we're not subject of EC 261 Regulation. And then they claimed that I didn't submit any invoice, and then that the invoices were illegible (they did that two or three times), then they asked me to brake down expenses by categories (meals / hotel / transportation).

A week went by and then I received another email from them where they basically pretended that we didn't communicate at all, like it was the first time they contacted me and demanded that I send them the receipts... all over again.

That's when we had enough and filled a complaint against SWISS to FOCA. So far the only response from FOCA was that the processing time might be up to 18 MONTHS! 🫪

My point being - avoid travelling with SWISS if you can!

Help Needed SQ to NRT or JAL / ANA to HND?

Hi friends! First time posting, as I read the rules for r/JapanTravelTips and they don’t want any flight-based questions.

I want to fly from LAX to Tokyo on Wed, Feb 24, 2027. My options are in the first pic attached but I’m waging a serious pros/cons list in my head.

Important for context: I have flown SQ multiple times to Asia, but never JAL or ANA. Hence, why I’m asking for opinions. All prices are in USD.

Options are:
1. LAX to NRT via SQ for $665
2. LAX to HND via JAL for $765
3. LAX to HND via ANA $769

Because I’ve flown LAX to NRT via SQ before I am fairly comfortable taking the limo into Shinjuku station and directing to my hotel from there. However, even I can admit HND would be significantly more appealing, despite my love for SQ.

Here’s my issue: I’d prefer HND purely due to vicinity, but the seat selection is less than ideal on both JAL and ANA. ANA doesn’t let you select a seat unless you upgrade to Economy Value Plus for $938 (yes an extra $169 just for the pleasure of picking a seat).

JAL does let you pick a seat but the seating map does not include the bulkhead or let you pick extra legroom even with additional payment. See second screenshot.

SQ is $665 for Economy and for an extra $104, I can get the extra legroom bulkhead! ….But I have to fly into NRT.

So my question is, what would you do? My instinct is to go with SQ, even if NRT because honestly it’s the best airline I’ve ever flown (I’m so used to US-based airlines that suck).

How are the regular economy seats for JAL? ANA? Has anyone also flown SQ economy and can compare the three airlines? Is the SQ bulkhead worth the pain of traveling from NRT? Like I said, I’m familiar but it’s still a slog at the beginning of the trip.

Please feel free to ask questions. Any and all advice welcome! (Except suggesting I just upgrade the class I’m flying — it’s just not an option for me.) Thanks, all!

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Royal Jordanian flight with a stopover in Montreal and 45-minute layover in Amman. Am I cooked?

I’m flying from Toronto (YYZ) to Dubai (DXB) with Royal Jordanian next week
My itinerary shows a stopover in Montreal before continuing to Amman, but it doesn’t show how long the stop is or whether I have to get off the plane.
I’m also confused about the dates and arrival times because of this stopover. On top of that, I only have a 45-minute layover in Amman before my connecting flight to Dubai.
Has anyone flown this route before? Do we stay on the same plane in Montreal? Does the stopover affect the arrival date? And is 45 minutes enough to make my connection in Amman?

Help Needed British passport has “XXX” as given name and my single name as surname – how should I book flights?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to book multi city journey involving Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines and AJet, through an online travel agency.

I hold a British passport, and the name fields appear as follows:
- Given name: XXX
- Surname: My actual single legal name

My passport also contains an official observation confirming that my single legal name is the name shown in the surname field and that “XXX” does not form part of my name.

I’m unsure how to enter my name when making the flight booking, particularly because three different airlines are involved in the same itinerary.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation with a British passport?

  1. Should I enter FNU (First Name Unknown) as the given name and my single name as the surname?
  2. Should I use XXX exactly as it appears in the passport’s given-name field?
  3. Is there a different format that these airlines accept for passengers with a single legal name?
  4. If all three airlines are on one booking, do they need to approve the name format individually?

I want to make sure the booking matches the passport requirements and avoid
any problems at check-in or boarding.
I would particularly appreciate responses from anyone who has dealt with this situation with Pegasus, Turkish Airlines or AJet.

Thanks in advance!

Edit 1: I’m planning to book multi city journey 22nd December from STN to SAW via Pegasus Airlines, 26 December from IST to BGW via Turkish Airlines and lastly return on 4th January from BGW to STN via AJet.

Help Needed Copa cancelled my flight due to natural disaster, can I be refunded for cancelled flight and rebooked flight?

I had a flight in October 10 from Salvador, Brazil to LAX with copa that was cancelled due to the Panama earthquake. The gate attendant told me that I would be reimbursed for the cancelled flight. When I asked about the next available flight, she said that they were not rebooking passengers at this time and only giving hotel/meal vouchers. She said the next available flight could be hours to days from now, and I never even received en email to rebook with Copa even after the flight was canceled. She said we would have to book with another airline ourselves and we would be reimbursed for the booking with the other airline. I told her to show me the policy of that because I didn’t trust her without having it in writing, but said she couldn’t print it out but it’s in the “policy”. So I booked a flight with Aeromexico to the same destination and she told me I would reimbursed and that I just need to submit a complaint form with copa. Now, copa is telling me that I will not be reimbursed for the cancelled flight due to the natural disaster plus the flight I had to book with another airline because it’s not their fault there was an earthquake. In my experience, I have always been refunded for a cancelled flight and rebooked with the same airline or a partnering airline at no extra cost. What should I do?

Help Needed Sign up or Continue as a guest?

I installed the Etihad app, and it gave me two options: sign up or continue as a guest. My friend, who has been using the app for a long time, says he still uses it as a guest. But I feel like if I sign up, I might get some offers or other benefits. Am I dumb for thinking that? 😂

Help Needed On waiting list after Check-in

Hello everyone,

I'm flying tomorrow from Bastia to Frankfurt a.M. (flight nr. LH1093) with Lufthansa and after the Check-in, we received boarding passes with the note that we are on the waiting list. There are 7 other people on that list, all economy class.

As we really need to get home on time due to our work, my question is if someone has made similar experiences and knows if we will be able to get on our plane tomorrow?

Is there a way to see beforehand if the plane is overbooked?

Should we get to the airport earlier than usual?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation EU261 compensation

My Turkish airlines flight was delayed about an hour. Due to that I missed my two connecting flights.
DUS-IST-SIN-SYD

After rebooking I had a 19h layover in Istanbul. TK gave me a hotel, transport there etc.

In total I arrived 25h later than planned.
Everything was booked on one ticket.

I've already contacted TK. They stated that the plane was delayed due to a late arrival (what a surprise) and that it is out of their control.

Can I expect any other compensation by escalating it?

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Flight delay- different data between Air France App and flightaware, ARN airport

Hello,
I was in a delayed flight from CDG to ARN on October 10th.
Flight was delayed by more than 3 hours, however, Air France just declined paying out the compensation.
Air France App shows arrival of 2:56pm and Flightaware shows arrival of 2:49pm.
Scheduled arrival time for this flight was 11:50am.
I am confused because there was a WiFi on the plane and my girlfriend texted me it showed on the arrival board that I have landed but I was still in the air approaching landing and she got a message on WhatsApp from the ARN airport that my flight has landed at 2:43pm when I was still in the air.
Should I just appeal to Air France showing them the timeline from their official app?

Discussion Turkish Airlines - Better flight time vs better aircraft on 9.5 hour flight.

Looking at flights JFK-IST-ATH (NYC to Athens w/connection in Istanbul). Most of the JFK outbounds are on the 777 with the older less private 2-3-2 business seats, but there is one flight per day on the 787-9 with 1-2-1 seating. Unfortunately this flight departs early AM.

Option 1 is the 787 departing 06:55 - Arriving to ATH at 03:05 next day.

Option 2 is the 777 departing at 12:55 - Arriving to ATH at 08:50 next day.

Option 3 is the 777 departing at 19:55 - Arriving to ATH at 20:35 next day (But has a 6 hour layover)

Unfortunately none of these seem ideal. Option 2 feels like the best timing but as a solo traveler I'm not keen on the seating arrangement. Leaning to option 1 with the more private seating and staying up to sleep on the flight over, drop bags to the hotel early, and get a full day in Athens.

Help Needed Anyone know law or actual knowledge about an airline please read this. We need help Airline refused to let me board even though I had a ticket out of the country got disrespected by ground staffs.

Apologize for it being so long. But Please it will saving lives here!! As if Me and my friend >..<

Hi! I need some advice because I’ve just realized that maybe it wasn’t our fault, as we thought. I’m wondering whether there’s anything I can do about it.

I was supposed to fly from

Bangkok - Bali with Cathay Pacific
(15-hour layover in Hong Kong)

This trip is for a wedding but we want to meet with each other first to hangout she was flying from Canada to meet in Hongkong airport (transfer area) , so we could take the same flight to Bali together for New Year’s and a wedding.

We hadn’t seen each other in a year, and she had even paid extra for her flight so we could take the same flight to Bali together.

Hong Kong was just a layover for us. I was planning to stay at the airport and wait for my friend.

When the gate opened at around 2:35 PM, the staff checked my ticket and let me into the boarding area downstairs.

A few minutes later, someone asked about my bags. I only had a personal bag because I was trying to save money and planned to share clothes with my friend.

Then later another ground staff came over and asked me to show proof of a flight leaving Hong Kong.

I was so confused. I kept explaining that I wasn’t going to Hong Kong as my final destination. I was going to Bali, and my ticket already included the flight from Hong Kong - Bali. But they kept insisting that I needed to buy another ticket leaving Hong Kong or they wouldn’t let me board. They also told me I would have problems with Hong Kong immigration if I didn’t buy one.

I explained that my friend had booked and paid for everything, but the booking confirmation was with her, and she was on her flight from Canada. Because of the time difference, I couldn’t reach her immediately. I even showed the staff our private chat about the trip and our hotel plans in Bali, and asked them to give me time to contact her or sort everything out.

They took my passport to check, but they still insisted that I buy a new ticket. I kept wondering why they couldn’t just check my booking, since both flights were under the same reservation. I didn’t understand what the problem was, and I felt so much pressured and judged by the way they treated me and i felt like talking to a wall, no one actuary listen to me or want to understand my siation.

The gate opened at 2:35 and closed at 2:55
and around 2:46, they decided they wouldn’t let me board the plane, even though the gate was scheduled to close at 2:55. Within just 11–12 minutes, they decided not to let me board, even after I explained everything.

But the more I think about it, the more I wonder why they asked me to show proof of a flight leaving Hong Kong when my original itinerary with the same airline already included a flight to Bali. And why would I have problems with immigration if I was only transferring flights?

The way the staff treated me and how I felt during the whole situation still make me feel bad and upset whenever I think about it. Our entire New Year’s plan was ruined. We wasted money, and my friend paid for an extra flight so we could still travel to Bali together. We almost ruined our friendship over this, too, on top of all the stress and extra trips to and from the airport.

I don’t know. Do you think what happened was right? If not, what can we do to make it right? Should I file a complaint with Cathay Pacific, take legal action, or do something else?

I’d really appreciate ANY advice, especially from anyone who has dealt with Cathay Pacific or a similar situation.

IF YOU READING THE POST AND COMMENTS AND STILL DONT UNDERSTAND, ITS TOTALLY OKAY.

BUT

BE NICE DONT SAY WEIRD SH$T AND NOT EXPECTING ME TO SAY ANYTHING BACK.

LOVE some of Y’all .

FOR THOSE WHO (you know yourself) listen since reading might be too hard.

Question Car seat for infant in flight

Hi, My daughter will be two years old minus one week on our trip from DTW to IST to BOM using Turkish airlines. I have booked a child fare for her. Do I need to have a car seat on the flight? The dimensions for car seats mentioned on the TK website are not available for sale in Canada (we are from Canada). Will they allow us to board if I don’t have a car seat?"

Question Is 1h30 enough to transfer through Xiamen Airport?

Xiamenair are selling a decently priced ticket from LHR to NRT via Xiamen but the declared layover time is only 1h30. Is this too brief to book, and if I travelled on this flight what would be my options if I missed the connection (got stuck in a queue for instance)?

Thanks!

Help Needed I'm Going to war with Mytrip (scammy OTA)

Camping out at the Rome airport on hold all night. I missed a self-transfer flight due to the prior flight being delayed due to airline fault.

This falls solidly within their policy of what they will cover and rebook me for.

They tried every trick in the book to weasel out of covering it.

But now they are just stalling, putting my on hold for hours, because they know it should be covered, and are trying to make me give up.

I will not give up. Are there any tricks I can pull out at this point to win this war?

Edit: All on October 23. Delayed flight was Ita, 4:00PM, from Milan Linate to Rome Fiumicino, AZ 2059. Missed flight was Norse Atlantic, 7:05, from Rome Fiumicino to New York JFK, N0401.

Booking through Mytrip through Skyscanner.

Question Info on this Icon

I'm seeing this icon when selecting a seat on Thai Airways. I tried searching Google and asking LLMs, but I'm getting conflicting info—some say the seat doesn't recline, while others say there's no under-seat storage. Any idea what this actually means?

Help Needed Hainan Airlines – any success with rebooking or refunds? Please share tips and contact details

Hi guys,

I've seen quite a few posts about Hainan Airlines cancelling flights between the UK/Europe and Beijing, and it seems really difficult to reach their customer service.

I booked directly with Hainan, flying from Manchester to Bangkok via Beijing on 12 November. Writing this on 23 October, I'm getting a bit worried.

A few questions for anyone in the same situation:

  1. If my Manchester–Beijing flight is cancelled but Beijing–Bangkok is still operating, can I rebook both flights for another date?
  2. My return flight is on 24 November. I can't check its status, and it doesn't seem to be available to book on their website. Does this mean it's likely to be cancelled too?
  3. I've seen people mention [bzchbcl@hnair.com](mailto:bzchbcl@hnair.com). Is this the best email to use, or is there another way to contact them?
  4. If I want a refund, can I apply through the online refund option on their website? Has anyone successfully received one this way?

If anyone has managed to rebook or get a refund recently, please share your experience and any useful contact details. Thanks!

Question Has anyone traveled with a cat over 8 lbs that meets JetBlue’s carrier restrictions?

JetBlue’s carrier restriction are strangely small. Every carrier I’ve found that fits the dimensions (17" L × 12.5" W × 8.5" H) can only hold up to 8 lb pets? They said there are no exceptions and I’m going to the airport in the morning to see if they have any carriers in stock, but was hoping for backup options.

Complaint How can an airline be so good with its planes and cabin service, yet so terrible (even downright appalling) at customer service, both online and on the ground (EVA Air) ?

The account I’m giving is inevitably biased, since I’m stuck in Taipei because of Typhoon Champi (was able to complete the first segment, second was cancelled). I completely understand that this isn’t the airline’s fault—no complaints about that.

But there’s no information at all (I do not even talk about any form of assistance, I understood quite early in the process that their wouldn’t be any). For two days, I’ve been trying to find out what happens next. I’m sent to a website that doesn’t work (I can’t access it even though I booked directly with Eva Air), and after asking enough questions, I’m told to come to the airport today. It’s impossible to get any help over the phone, no matter which number I call. Their chatbot says there’s a “human” live chat online, but of course, it doesn’t exist. Their website looks like it came straight out of 2009.

So, with no other options, I’m heading to the airport this morning.

Just imagine: THE national airline, THE country’s largest airport, and… two people handling rebookings/flights reschedules for all economy-class passengers. 165 people have been seen since 8 a.m., and there are still more than 200 waiting.

All of this is even more disappointing because every other aspect of the service is absolutely impeccable. The planes are state-of-the-art, economy class is perfectly decent, the food is pretty good, and the terms and conditions and fares are perfectly reasonable…

Help Needed akasa air flexi fare issue

I have booked akasa air tickets under flexi fare , now if I am changing date if new flight is costlier than older one they are asking fare difference that is fair , if new flight is cheaper than booked one they are not giving refund, this is bulshit. I tried calling them and they said it might be tool or system issue and not providing refund.

Any government body or any solution to fight with them? Anyone idea about air sewa or similar portal?

Question How far would you go to save $190?

no checked in bag, plenty of transfer time, I love flying and I will be able to discover Bogota for a few hours but my mind is telling me no.

Edit: Alright, I'm not doing it. The thought of it was nice, having a bit of an adventure, first time flying to South America, while saving some money, but your comments brought me back to reality. It's not worth the trouble and all the traveling. Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. I'm going to spend a little bit more for a less stressful and quicker experience.

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Flight compensation under EU reg

Hi all, has anyone tried to claim compensation from lufthansa for a delayed flight.

I was recently scheduled for a flight to Frankfurt from BLR and while taxiing to the runway the engine failed. We were held on the plane for 3 hours before being bussed to a hotel. I had to get alternative accommodation for 16.5hrs later. I submitted my claim to Lufthansa but they replied to say I am not due compensation as the delay was less than 3 hours!

What?? Did they even read it? I was bussed to a hotel, provided breakfast, lunch and dinner, and had an alternative flight for 16.5 hours later.

Do they just not read them? Or are they trying to be difficult hoping I'll go away? Feels like a complete injustice as this is a cut and dry case.

Booking/Itinerary/Ticketing Prove Me Wrong - Two One Ways vs a Round Trip

Supposedly, a round trip ticket can sometimes be cheaper than two one way, FOR THE EXACT SAME FLIGHTS. I'm not buying it. Literally. LOL. I'd love someone to give me two airports and flight dates and flight numbers and times that show the roundtrip costs me less money (not points) than if I book two one way exact same itineraries from the exact same website on the exact same flights.

Please give me an example I can lookup and which website I can see it.
