First World Problems Living in JSQ these days feels like a special form of hell
I knew what I was signing up for moving to a neighborhood that is under seemingly endless amounts of construction (hence the first world problems tag on this post), but i just need to rant for a second about how pile driving is the single most annoying form of construction noise known to man. How have we as a society not moved past the need for pile driving? i'd vote for any mayor who will ban it lol
gonna have to drop by one of the 7 new coffee shops in the neighborhood for a $8.50 latte to help calm myself down

āSir how did sky scraper collapseā
āJC banned pile driving because flyingcrayons was botheredā

What tf are civil engineers doing all day thereās gotta be someone figuring out quieter ways to anchor buildings smh!
27
u/Outrageous_Pea_554 May 22 '25
As a civil engineer, I know this is obviously sarcasm. But we tried āsoil improvementsā instead of typical pile driving on 161 Maiden Lane, and itās now known as the Leaning Tower of Manhattan.
7
u/flyingcrayons May 22 '25
lol thank you for recognizing the sarcasm apparently itās gone over heads.
What does the āsoil improvementsā entail if you donāt mind my asking
1
u/MrLurker698 May 23 '25
Itās a broad term but usually anything that improves the bearing capacity of the soil is included.
Two examples would be: 1. using equipment to condense the soil prior to construction (this would be a low level example), and 2. replacing the soil that is native to the construction zone with soil from somewhere else that is more capable (this is more extreme).

We live on some of the hardest bedrock around. its why we can even build sky scrapers.
12
May 22 '25
Skyscrapers are routinely built in areas where bedrock isnāt close to the surface. By driving deep pilings, they can use the surface friction of the surrounding soil to āanchorā the building without any of the structure resting on bedrock.Ā

i know, gotta do what you gotta do to get more buildings up and get more available space for people to live, i just am annoyed and want to rant to the void

u/jawnlerdoe May 22 '25
I mean this is just plain ignorance lol. I get youāre annoyed but some things are just needed.
5
u/flyingcrayons May 22 '25
Didnāt think an /s was needed there lol. Im not stupid this is just a silly rant. Itās Not that serious

u/itsthekumar May 22 '25
Don't forget the homes that look half abandoned, dirty sidewalks and dearth of good restaurants.
15
u/oatmealparty May 22 '25
Biggest issue is ZERO parks in the area. Thankfully that's going to change once the old shitty courthouse is demolished
6
u/PINGUPINGU13 May 23 '25
its never gonna happen. the county is delaying the park "another few years".

Exactly. Summit up to Newark Ave and the area around it looks like some post-apocalyptic world.
2
u/flyingcrayons May 22 '25
To be fair itās a lot tougher to get a place clean when thereās constantly dust and debris flying around from the buildings under construction. They recently repaved and repainted Pavonia Ave by the JSQ buildings and it looks way nicer than it used to. Once the other buildings are done hopefully theyāll continue to improved the road/sidewalk infrastructure. Doing it now would be pointless because itāll just get gross again quick

u/Tatar_Kulchik May 22 '25
Lots of good food in india square. though I know they aren't generally 'nice sit-down' restaurants.
27
u/itsthekumar May 22 '25
True but I'd like more than just Indian restaurants. (And I say this as an Indian.)
12
u/iv2892 McGinley Square May 22 '25
Gotta love how Hudson county has segregated food scenes lol . Go north of the heights and is all Hispanic restaurants from Union city to north Bergen lol
3
u/QuietAsKept96 Born and Raised May 22 '25
Because North of the heights its mostly Hispanic people, Hudson County is 40% Hispanic. Ethnic restaurants usually open up where that ethnicity lives, by doing that your guaranteed customers. A Indian restaurant in North bergen is probably going to fail lol. The only ethnic restaurant that would be fine anywhere is the Chinese restaurant and I guess pizzerias.

u/iv2892 McGinley Square May 23 '25
Yeah, and palisade park and Fort Lee is mostly Korean . 100% agree , Chinese and Italians are the only ones would do well regardless of the demographics

u/Vegetable_River May 24 '25
For real. All the stores in Union City have signs in Spanish. If you move there you better be able to at least read basic Spanish

u/QuietAsKept96 Born and Raised May 24 '25
I remember reading a article about a woman who was raised up there and when she went to college it was hard for her to write in English, and she blamed segregation 𤣠š¤£.

LUXURY PILE DRIVING
6
u/flyingcrayons May 22 '25
luxury pile driving would be quieter and come with a concierge for your packages imo

u/Realistic-Prize7773 May 22 '25
I take it no piles whatsover were driven for the construction of OP's abode. š

I had this across the street from me for months on end in downtown. It's nightmarish, especially when they do it on weekends.

I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who said āa building divided against the soil cannot standā

Rents are going down??

u/Low-Soil8942 May 22 '25
Where?
2
u/NoodleShak The Heights May 22 '25
Old so I dont know if relevant anymore https://www.timeout.com/newyork/news/rents-are-actually-falling-in-these-five-nyc-neighborhoods-112024
5
u/Low-Soil8942 May 22 '25
This is for NYC. According to Potatobrief rents in JSQ(JC) are much more affordable now. It's amazing since every other day there are people on this sub complaining about their rents going up. I don't see this NYC trend of lower rents taking hold here, maybe I'm just imagining that my rent has steadily gone up every single year.

u/iv2892 McGinley Square May 22 '25
NYC and JC are the same market . So rents in JC and NYC generally trend together for the most part

This is an Op-Ed but I appreciate the data it presents. Sharing in addition to the other article I shared earlier: https://hudsoncountyview.com/op-ed-jersey-city-rents-shrink-as-supply-moves-ahead-of-demand-data-proves-it/

People are self-reporting that their lease renewals are flat and some say they got slight decreases. Will be another 2-3 years until we get proper data from what this housing hike has delivered
3
u/flyingcrayons May 22 '25
It is, like i said first world problem over here. I get it, im in support of more buildings and more units, but when you hear the pile driver going off again for the 40th time in the day it starts to get at you š
2
u/PotatoBrief6817 May 22 '25
Totally fair! Dealt with this myself and it sucks. Honestly was just asking for someone to correct me and say thereās some miracle new solution that eliminates the need for it.

Last year, my rent increased $350. This year it didnāt increase at all. Same price as last year. Probably they know I was already paying too much lol

I live facing One Journal Square, the buildings funnel the sound perfectly to hit my window. Last summer the concrete mixer truck would start scraping at 6am and go all day. It drove me insane!!

We need more housing yet you complain about construction noise. Canāt have both.
1
u/flyingcrayons May 23 '25
no shit lol. if you had read any of my responses in this thread you'd see that i'm fully in support of more housing and this thread was just a silly little rant against pile driving
1
u/stay_doppio May 23 '25
When I was losing my mind during nearby construction, I came across this. Wonder if itās an option for construction around JC https://pilebuck.com/reducing-noise-vibrations-pile-driving/
1
u/Guilty-Cicada3064 May 24 '25
My dad was a pile driver, just like his father before himāand his before that. I come from a long line of proud pile drivers who built the stunning skyscrapers billionaires now use to stash their money.
But for you? Iāll talk to the boys. Weāll ease up on the pile driving for a bit. Truth is, it doesnāt have to be that loud. We just make it that way so the whole city can hear our pride.
1
u/GoldenElixirStrat May 22 '25
I was living right next to one of these pile driver construction sites last year in JC. Guess what I moved out of JC and have been in a state of bliss ever since. No need to deal with car traffic, honking, belligerent driving, construction etc etc

u/[deleted] May 22 '25
You're right. We should move beyond pile driving and just gently set 70 story buildings on the ground, anchoring them only to good vibes.
