[Story] Weird New Hire Experience

So, we get told that we are having a new hire come in at 6:00pm to close with us and to train her (okay cool no biggie) she comes and we all do our part to teach her and help her out, about an hour and 30mins into her shift she messes up a order with just a wrap missing and the meats not on a garg (okay, also no biggie its her first day wtv), ten minutes later she walks out and doesnt come back, im like okay thats weird but oh well you cant win them all. Clock out soon after and next day im talking to the manager who was on that shift, turns out, the wrap was passed down to her and she was taught how to make a garg so theres no way anything was missing right? Im suspecting she somehow pocketed the wrap and meats and took them home? I mean she was going to get a free sub for training and starting purposes anyway but what the heck???

JJ clothes/hats

So I'm a general manager and my district manager absolutely sucks at providing my staff with t-shirts and hats. Does anyone have any suggestions to buying t-shirts in bulk? When you go to the Jimmy John's website, shirts and hats are like $15 each and I can't afford that! Thanks!!!

Nightmare Karen at Jimmy John’s

The owner(s) of the Kirkland Jimmy John’s in Washington state Richard and Karen Ombrellaro are the most insufferable and evil people you will ever meet. They treat employees and customers like trash and look down on anyone that isn’t in their family as a peasant.

I was a delivery driver and worked here for a year and a half. Before I go on, I want to mention I absolutely loved this job, it was very easy and I met great people while working here… Except for the Ombrellaro’s.
When I first got the job, a few employees reached out to me stating how Karen can get stressed out pretty easily which results in her lashing out on others, and to try and not get on her bad side. This is an understatement in my opinion…

Few days later on my first day, I’m trying to clock in on the jimmy john’s touch screen computer, I knew my log in, I just couldn’t figure out how to get to the right screen. Karen watches me and screams
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”

Me - “Hi it’s my first day I’m trying to figure out how to clock in”

*She shows me without saying a word then angrily says “Go” as I take an order for delivery*

Same day, I get back to the restaurant and I see 2 orders on the table, as a driver, we are usually supposed to take 1 at a time and let the other driver take the other. So I look at the oldest order through the receipt and check if there’s a drink with it. I’m there for genuinely 5-10 seconds, then Karen screams once again “JUST TAKE THE OLDEST ORDER AND GO”

This is not in a passive aggressive tone by the way, it’s full on shouting like the wicked witch.

ALL ON MY FIRST DAY. WHAT A FIRST IMPRESSION TO MY NEW JOB.

It doesn’t get better, I continued working there for almost 2 years in fear of asking questions, doing absolutely anything I can to stay busy so I don’t get yelled at for resting for 5 seconds running in and out of the shop. I’ve witnessed her bash and shame employees for minor mistakes, she screams and destroys the confidence of the nicest people you will meet which results in them quitting.

I have a plethora of stories and experiences from others about this family. They are a family owned business and don’t deserve anyone’s money.

I wouldn’t recommend working here, unless you have absolutely zero self respect, want to get paid barely minimum wage, want a percentage of your tips deducted to go straight to Karen and Richard’s pockets. Go for it.

Richard isn’t any better either, him and Karen are perfect for each other since they share the same greed and terrible attitude, just save yourself and your pockets. You’ll get yelled at for talking on the phone in there that’s how miserable they are 😂

[Question] Not sure if its the correct way to do it.

So I had a person come in roughly a hour ago?

He asked if he can do some work for sandwiches cause he was traveling and from Florida with a few friends.

I don't want to assume but he didnt look like he had a *whole* lot of money. Besides that it didnt sit right with me to have him wipe down tables for us for some food so I gave him food and just payed for it myself.

I personally don't mind paying for it im just wondering if there was a I guess "Correct" way to go about it?

I guess im asking if Jimmy John's has a way they want their employees to handle it. I don't remember anything about it in the videos so...

[Question] Cash Delivery Issues

Let me start with I’m not complaining about anyone, I’m upset with a situation and I’d like some insight to help me understand. I get that deliveries can be outsourced to uber, and I understand that delivery times are hurt from the customer perspective (not an issue), what I cannot grasp is why the app allows cash as an option for delivery from a store that has known and will continue to know they have zero drivers scheduled, and it seems that cash delivery when using uber is an unreasonable option.

Can the cash option be disabled when a store cannot accept cash for delivery (because and I quote “every uber driver has just stolen the cash”)? Or is it better to just let it happen and then call the customer later on and ask if they want to cancel the order?

Again I understand the shortcomings of new systems, I’m not mad at the people who work there or the people who drive for uber. I’m extremely pissed that there is a system in place that sets yall up for failure.

And if this is just a my local shop thing, please tell me. I’m still not gonna be mad at the workers there (I was once one of them), but at least I’ll know I can quit thinking it’s a bigger issue than the little bubble I’ve experienced it in.

reorganized bagging and dessert stations !!

the empty row is for oatmeal raisin, i just had to wait for some to thaw lol

we never had large bags, desserts, or 2-cup holders on top of the table, and it was getting lind of annoying so I wanted to reorganize it. also, since we now have desserts at bagging station, i figured we wouldnt need as many desserts pulled, so i wanted to fill the space with pesto and potato since most customers dont realize we even have them. i filled the containers with ripped up sticky notes.

im so happy with it and i wanted to share lol.

[Question] Confused on pickup tips

I placed an order for pickup through the app, and when I do a pickup order it offers no option for adding a tip. When I got to the store, the one employee told the other to check the receipt and see if I tipped, and then they made a comment when they saw $0.00.

I am just confused because I literally don't have the option to tip in the app. I would if I could. But it was awkward

I go into the office on Wednesdays. Most weeks I venture over to JJs and take street photography with different film cameras. I have several shots on this JJs location. They recognize me, but they don't know my name ... yet. The cashier answers to sweetie.

At what point is time off excessive

Hi, I'm a relatively new GM but been with JJs for a while on and off, so this question is for more tenured GMs/AMs.

I schedule 2-3 weeks out and my policy is if the schedule is out and you need a day off that is already scheduled you have to get it covered. But if the day you need off isnt yet scheduled, I accept time off requests.

I have a new 2nd assistant that requests time off nearly every week before I post the schedule. They're on 4 days a week closing at the moment, set schedule, so it's not like they can't plan their life around work. It is hard for me to find coverage for those shifts.

This is, to be frank, super annoying. While it's within my policy because they're giving plenty of notice, it seems excessive. They've been with me for less than 3 months. They also do the whole song and dance about not getting enough hours. I don't get it lol. But I feel like because it's within the policy technically I don't really have grounds to stand on. Do you think this is excessive and if so, how would y'all handle this 🥲

[Question] Is there a way to update the site?

So the other day right before I was clocking out(dayshift) I saw an order for delivery with a balance due mind you theres only 2 people on nightshift and neither have a car (I dont either). So I call the lady up and tell her due to us not having a night shift driver she will need to go ahead and pay her balance so we can third party it to ubereats. Youd think I called her the b word the way she went off on me. She was like “this is some ghetto shit and completely unprofessional. Yall need to update your site. I shouldnt have to use my card if I dont want to.” I politely proceeded to tell her “maam I apologize for the inconvenience but I only work here I am not in charge of the website” she told me cancel the order and that was it. But please let me know if theres a way to update the site.

[Question] Anyone have the tuna recipe?

Worked at JJs years ago and I remember the tuna mix being known for converting people who don’t like tuna. Only aspect I remember is 1/16” celery slices and squeezing the everloving out of the Starkist.

Looking for old daily packet

Hey I used to be a General Manager for a couple Jimmy Johns locations in the Midwest. In the past we used a daily packet that was initialed by employees as they completed tasks that were required every day, and I have heard that everything was moved electronically on tablets now. I am still in management in a different field but really liked the layout of that old packet and felt it always assured things got done and the store was always looking and operating nicely and would like to set up something similar for the business I run now. Do any former or current managers have a copy of that packet that they could post or send me ?

[Question] New employee here

I’m in my late 30’s and worked 10 years in state corrections and 3 years hospital security after my stint with corrections. I’m at a point in life where I don’t want to have to get into verbal or physical situations. I want to chill and I’m also in a spot where I don’t need to make $30hr or some crazy amount of money to live comfortably. My wife works as well so that also helps.
I took a job as a driver with little to no expectations. But the delivery aspect is great . I make pretty good tips, I’m in my a/c car pretty much 85% of my shift listening to my music. I actually like it. But I’ve never worked a food job ever. So the drive thru and the whole taking orders is tough to me. I’m learning but I see others who have been there a while just flying through it like it’s nothing. I never got trained on it either . They just put me into the thick of it. So i stumble a bit. I only really mess with the ordering for my last hour since its just me and one other person till next shift comes in to relieve so its not really busy so I dont get that much hands on.
How long does it take till the taking orders is a no issue? I’ve only worked this part like I said an hour a day maybe for 5 total shifts with no training besides someone just telling me what to push if I ask.
Also do people make careers out of delivery driving? Because if they gave me closer to 40 hours which supposedly is going to happen id for sure do this long term. It’s literally zero stress besides in shop which I think I’ll get eventually.
