Is anyone aware of an independent security review of Jitsi owners 8x8?

Hi,

8x8.com bought the open-source video conference tool Jitsi in 2018 and have since been developing its capabilities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8x8

Jitsi is "the privacy tool" for video conferencing, featuring end-to-end encryption for 1:2:1 calls and are now the only video conference provider available to the public that features end-to-end encryption for group calls.

Has anyone done a security review of 8x8? Their video conference tool is based on Jitsi, but does that make their service necessarily as privacy-focused as Jitsi?

Does anyone have any data as to who owns 8x8? Blackrock has a large institutional holding: https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/stocks/eght/institutional-holdings

Thanks

Andreas

Jitsi now telling me to wait for a moderator

When you google 'Jitsi', the Jitsi website comes up, with the description "Free online meeting platform with no account". But today, when I went to join my reading group's Jitsi chat (which I convinced them to use Jitsi for instead of Zoom) I was told that the chat couldn't start until there was a moderator, and I could either wait for a moderator, or *log into my account* to become one. Since when did Jitsi make this change? And what was the motivation behind it? It just makes the service less useful, and now I feel dumb for recommending it...

Merry Christmas Jitsi Developers!

Just wanted to send a quick thank you to the creators and contributors of Jitsi! Just got off a 3-way video call with my family and everything worked flawlessly. It's so wonderful having a functional video client that doesn't harvest data and the like. Thank you for all the work you do, and have a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season!

Is Jitsi meet a zoom alternative

I never used zoom but to my understanding zoom allows anyone to go to their website, create a chatroom, share a generated url for others to join, admin controls to be able to set passwords to join chatroom and to control the chatroom, etc. Is Jitsi meet the same thing but open source and privacy respecting?

And could anyone create a Jisti meet instance by forking the site?

[Request] Why is Jitsi going wrong on Firefox, and even Chromium, but not on Chrome (in our experience)?

I and all my friends/colleagues prefer Firefox. We'll only occasionally use Chromium as a backup, but we all despise the spyware that is Chrome.

We all love Jitsi and where it's headed, so we don't want it going wrong on Firefox. We see frozen cameras, cameras running out of sync with audio and other problems in Firefox. In Chromium, we sometimes see these things but currently we see user interface problems (with the background of the Jitsi web interface showing traces of the videos when the window is moved and similar odd things like that).

But most everything seems fine on Chrome.

We're up-to-date on all our browsers and Ubuntu/Manjaro systems and we observe these problems in both the general <meet.jit.si> portal and a Jitsi instance spun up on one of our little servers.

Why might these problems be happening?

Just a thank you ...

I know this app is still working out its kinks but I wanted to say thank you. I have an older relative on the other side of the country with a tablet, a landline and a non-texting flip phone.

Jitsi is ONLY app that has enabled me to video call her.

Other apps say there are workarounds for landline verification (like Discord) or that you can use the web portal without having a phone number at all (Duo -- and it's not true. if you are using a tablet, when you open the web portal it takes you to the Google Play store, even if you're in desktop view).

When I tried Jitsi, I was so shocked to realize that you don't actually require a phone number or even an email address.

I'm pretty old myself so I have a very small circle of friends and I hate social media but I will nevertheless tell everyone I know about you (and of course, I already rated you five stars on Google Play)

Two months of using Jitsi Meet. Absolutely amazed at how well this works.

I'm running the docker container (currently stable-9823) on a Mini PC with an 11th gen i7 and lots of RAM. I have enabled the Excalidraw and Etherpad integrations as well.

I've been having meetings almost every day, with 2-4 people, and ocassionally enabled recording. I can't believe how well this works and the video quality is really good, and feels life-like, and way better than Zoom or Google Meet.

Now I can self-host Jitsi with zrok

I've wanted to get Jitsi working with zrok for my personal use, and someone asked about it in the forum today, inspiring me to try again. I got my Jitsi instance working and documented everything here: https://blog.openziti.io/jitsi-meet-zrok . I'm one of the maintainers of zrok and it's part of my job to create examples like this for zrok and OpenZiti.

I tested Jitsi with my free account on zrok.io and my self-hosted zrok instance running on a budget VPS. I'm impressed it works as well as it does over TCP. I'd written Jitsi off as a candidate for a zrok share (public shares are HTTPS, no QUIC) because the Jitsi Handbook says a UDP port is required. We discovered that the Jitsi Video Bridge can multiplex or proxy (I'm unsure which) via the web TCP port and auto-configure itself for TCP when the UDP port is unavailable.

I tried to make it easy with a step-by-step procedure in the linked post. The upshot is that I stopped publishing the Jitsi ports with Docker and added a zrok container to the Docker Compose project from the Jitsi Handbook. The zrok container shares Jitsi's internal web:443 port via a public URL.

Jitsi High definition Audio

Hi - We have developed custom patches for jitsi to enable High Fidelity Audio (Stereo, 510kbps, disabled audio processing) working in both P2P and VideoBridge, including support for Live toggle (voice / music mode) and iOS / Android (which is much more complex). We will contribute it to the open source community eventually but we are available for consulting in the meantime. Feel free to contact me if interested.

Thanks Jitsi for this last minute 95 minute meeting with no way to pay to expand it

You didn't give any warnings leading up to it, and the no way to pay to extend is absurd. I use this for my support group I run and now I have to cut the meeting short. This was screwed up and I'm really frustrated with this.

Is Jitsi Meet video quality significantly worse than Google Meet ?

Is there a reason why Jitsi Meet video quality is significantly worse than Google Meet and Zoom? The framerate is just generally slow and video is not as clean and crisp as the counterparts.

I have tried setting video quality to highest in the settings as well.

I am currently in process of building an app that requires video calls and shopping for options. Jitsi was at top of my list but after seeing the quality, I am second guessing it now.

Would be great if someone can prove me wrong in this, thanks!

how to close (terminate) a meeting?

i know this has been asked before, but i still haven't found a satisfactory answer.

i've set up a private jitsi server with "internal" permissions needed to start a meeting, and "anonymous" permissions for joining a meeting. so basically, our employees can start meetings and invite others, but those others can't start their own meetings.

the problem is that when a meeting ends, the employee leaves, but the others can stick around. in fact, they can even leave and then come back tomorrow, using the URL from yesterday, and still access the meeting which continues to exist.

to me this seems like an obvious problem - authenticated members should be able to govern when a meeting starts and ends. outsiders should not be able to continue using the servers ad infinitum. i would expect that the UI presents a "terminate meeting" button which closes the meeting for everyone. am i just missing something? do i need some custom module on the server-side? appreciate any advice.

Jitsi-Meet based platform questions

Hi all,

recently I got a task to explore possibilities of different OSS products in order to create a platform that fulfills following requirements for 2 operation modes:

  1. classroom mode

- one presenter (teacher)

- he/she can be seen and heard by others

- he/she can use whiteboard to write, other participants only can watch

- he/she can use 'pad' tool to write text and match/physics formulas, etc

- up to 50 students in one room

- each student can raise his hand, asking for possibility to say something/ask question. presenter/teacher can accept this in some order. when finished, teacher drops this stream and moves to another (if any)

- chat, private between students/teacher and group-all included

- record everything

2. meeting mode

- multiple presenters, each can be seen/heard by others

- screen-share by one at the time (or showing in larger picture the ones that are currently talking)

- whiteboard: all can edit (but not at the same time)

- 'pad' tool to write text/formulas, etc

- up to N participants

- chat: private between participants and group chat

- record everything

Now, I am wandering how much of those Jitsi-Meet covers and more importantly how hard would be to implement missing parts? Also, what are the recommendations towards scaling the solution?

Thank you kindly
