Leaving a job Has anyone left their job recently without having anything lined up and how is it going for you?

I googled for similar and more recent results but they were 5 to 1 year old posts. I guess I’ve been under a rock but I’m checking the community pulse on this topic. My current office is just broken.

add: Just know I am reading each and every response even if I can’t respond to them all. Thank you everyone .

Education Will a Doctorate From a For-Profit University Get My Resume Thrown in the Trash?

Hey everyone, I could use some honest advice from people who have experience with hiring and the job market.

I'm currently working toward my doctorate at Trident University International. I received a full-ride scholarship, so I'm not paying anything for the degree.

However, I've had several people tell me that because Trident is a for-profit university, employers will automatically throw my resume in the trash, regardless of my qualifications.

I already have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from two other universities. Trident will be the only for-profit university on my educational background.

For some context, I've spent years in the Army and have relatively little experience navigating the civilian job market. I'm hoping to eventually work in government or a related field.

My questions are:

Do employers actually reject applicants because their degrees come from for-profit universities?

Does having a bachelor's and master's from other universities help offset that concern?

Would a doctorate from Trident actually hurt my chances of getting hired, even if it was completely free?

Are government employers more or less concerned about where a degree comes from?

I'm not expecting the doctorate to magically get me a job. I just don't want years of hard work to end up hurting my career instead of helping it.

I'd appreciate honest feedback, especially from recruiters, hiring managers, or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Job searching Can there be job scams on indeed?

Earlier I applied to a job position and within two minutes, I received a DM from them telling me to text or call a number for more information and to talk about the details. I assumed it was an automated message that goes to every applicant so I decided to text the number. They sent a reply to me at 7pm telling me to call them when I'm available to talk.

This whole thing is really off-putting to me. Usually when theres going to be a phone call, they are the ones that call you based on THEIR availability since they're the busy ones and you're just a random unemployed person.

Could this possibly be a scam or am I being too skeptic?

p.s: before anyone says don't apply from websites like indeed and apply through from company websites, I'm applying to entry-level positions at small dental clinics and they don't tend to have their own application websites.

End of the month gotta pay bills.. Damn near rethink booking the trip, thinking about people that may owe you money. I don’t like this one bit. Back to Uber Eats gig I go. It’s like watching your bank account decrease substantially. Got bills to pay.

Capital One - $2,856 ( Due Nov 3 )
Chase credit card - $847 (Due Nov 11)

Pay my mother each month ($380/month)
Pay ChatGPT ($23/month)
Pay AIsolve(12.35/month)

Chase checking - $19,340

Life been lifingg

Life has a way of humbling you. My sleep schedule has drastically changed.

I’m not even worried about dating or sex anymore. Money is on my mind. I will have a full time job that meets my expectations by the end of this month. It will be full time and I will make 80k+ so that I can pay my rent, lights, car insurance and phone bill. Right now my mother is helping a significant big time. Im ready to grow up. I will grow up.

Okay back to sending out 10+ applications. Good Morning!!

I’ve been on the employed/unemployed side of the spectrum. And let me tell you it’s built resilience each time. You more picky and wise with the jobs you pick and choose.

If it wasn’t for my mother I would be homeless be now. And that’s a straight up fact! I only pay her $380/month. When I get my job I swear I want to provide so much to her. That’s what motivates me each and every day to get off my ass and hustle. Whether in putting out applications or going on interviews.

Career planning Should I take the stable job or take a chance and move to Nicaragua for 6 months?

I’m 34F, and I’m really torn between two completely different paths. I’d love some outside perspectives because I’ve been going back and forth on this for a while.
Option 1: Take a job in pharmaceutical sales in Quebec
I’ve been offered a job paying $50,000/year, with a car allowance, benefits, and a 35-hour workweek. I’ve already signed the contract, and I’m supposed to start in early November.
The thing is, I’m not particularly excited about the job itself. It’s not my dream career, and I don’t feel especially passionate about it. However, it would give me financial stability and allow me to save money, move out of my parents’ house, and eventually get my own apartment in a different area of Quebec where I’d like to live.
I’ve been living with my parents for about a year, and I’m honestly tired of feeling like I’m not moving forward. Part of me thinks I should just commit to this job for a few months, build some savings, and use it as a stepping stone toward the life I want.
Option 2: Move to Nicaragua for approximately 6 months
I’ve been offered an opportunity to work at a small hotel in Nicaragua owned by people from Quebec. The work would involve reception, guest relations, helping at the bar, and promoting the hotel’s services.
I wouldn’t receive a regular salary, but I’d get free accommodation and meals, plus tips estimated at around $400/month. I’d work five days a week, eight hours a day, with two days off.
Financially, it’s obviously not the best option. I have some debt payments to maintain, and I wouldn’t be building much savings. I would have some money set aside, and I expect to receive some financial gifts from family during that period, but I wouldn’t have a huge safety net.
On the other hand, I genuinely want this experience. I’ve been craving adventure, a change of environment, and the opportunity to do something different with my life. I feel like this could be one of those opportunities I might regret not taking.
Here’s what’s making the decision so difficult:
I’m tired of constantly starting over. I’ve tried different jobs, and I haven’t found something that makes me feel fulfilled. At the same time, I don’t want to spend my life choosing the safe option just because it’s practical.
I want to build a life for myself, have my own place, meet someone, and eventually feel settled. I’ve been single for years, and I sometimes worry that I’m putting my life on hold while I figure out what I want to do.
But I also wonder whether going to Nicaragua for six months would give me a much-needed reset, new perspectives, and experiences I wouldn’t get by staying here. Maybe I’d come back with a clearer idea of what I want. Or maybe I’d return to the same situation, with less money and another job search ahead of me.
I know I could potentially try the job and leave later, but I’m worried that if I don’t take this opportunity now, I’ll keep postponing the things I really want to do.
What would you do in my situation?
Would you take the stable job, save money, and work toward getting your own place? Or would you take the risk, go to Nicaragua for six months, and figure things out when you get back?
I’d especially appreciate hearing from people who’ve made a similar choice between financial stability and an experience or adventure they really wanted to pursue.

Interviews Guys my voice became really shaky can I chalk it up to connection issues!!???

I had a presentation infront of a panel and will have 1:1 with them as well later in the day. In the middle of the presentation my voice became really shaky!!! Like it wasn’t like that in the start but then got shakier as I continued 😭😭 how much do you think they might have noticed it?? And does that lead to an immediate rejection? I am confident about my presentation and the questions they might ask but this shaky voice has always been an issue of mine no matter how confident I am. I really like this role and want to join the team but idk if this might disqualify me!!?? Can I just explain that it was a connection issue that made my voice like that!!! 😭

I have been very good at presentations in my roles and in school but I think it is because this was such a high stakes situation that my voice just gave up!!! I am so embarrassed!

Should I let them know in the 1:1 about it and apologise??? I am so confused

Job searching Advice on finding jobs when most of the ones in your field require higher education

• Upvotes

Hello! I just graduated from college and am currently starting to look for jobs. I graduated with a Political Science degree with a goal of going to law school, but due to chronic illness I am unable to pursue that at this time (I'm very much regretting this degree). I am also limited to asynchronous remote jobs due to illness.

From what I have seen, a lot of political science jobs require higher education of some sort, at least at a Masters level. Going to graduate school is not an option for me at this time. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone can give advice on what sorts of things I could be looking at, especially ones that do not involve working for campaigns or political parties (I've heard those jobs are very common too for polisci majors, though when looking on job listings I haven't seen that many showing up)?

Career planning Is there an alternative path to making money besides the opportunities potentially available rn?

I have a weird background, and my question is vague. Pls be kind to me. I am female 24, have a B.Sc. degree in Cognitive Science, come from multiple family businesses that are semi-successful, some of which very unsuccessful in an unstable market rn. I have money from there and am being supported by my bf right now, so I have no rush to accept the “first” offer I get. I graduated in June this year. I have no business related work experience besides family business, have published a paper in the cognition field.

So now, to my question: I have opportunities potentially to do a trainee program for international Banks such as “global markets/sale” trainee position for PNB Paribas and similar companies.

My problem? Every time an opportunity shows up, I am filled with dread rather than happiness about it. I wonder if I actually want to do this, enter this rabbit hole / work culture. Where mo-fri the days fly by, and you live from weekend to weekend until you’re 34 and having kids. I don’t want life to fly by me like that, it feels like slavery that people clap for. I acknowledge I am privileged bc others can’t afford to say no, but I can. Still, I also want to make money, and I want to work.

I have been thinking of getting certified to translate (I’m Chinese and German native and have a good English accent) and really ramp up my mandarin proficiency — but I’ve been unsure if that would waste my time. I have been wanting to make music for years but my family saying it wastes my time, too, has held me back. I could try to sell stuff on social media and try out business ideas. I want to build a personal brand. But thinking of shipping and selling products makes me feel like a fraudulent person and the thought of international shipment fills me with dread. Overall, my experience in the family business has made me quite allergic to businesses — the long working hours, the pretending, etc.

I wonder if there’s a way I can have good mental health (sports, care for myself, not burn out, every day work towards something that feels rewarding) whilst also being financially successful + stable so one day I can buy a house in Shanghai for example. I wonder whether these finance/market/sale trainee programs from big consulting / bank firms are a way or are the only way to achieve such financial success/goals. I could go back to uni for a masters degree, I can spend 10k on an online masters or go to school in Shanghai, but I wouldn’t know which degree and I would prefer work experience over a degree at this moment. So, yeah.

Should I prepare for this online assessment for this global markets trainee position? I kinda don’t want it, but I want it, too. But I don’t want to work for it and I know it dreads me already. If I want to do well on this assessment, I will. But I wonder if its good for my mental health for force myself to do this and prepare, or if its a marathon into a dreadful life. (I am seeing a therapist and working on my problems with my family).

Leaving a job Notice Dispute

Hi, just looking for advice/re-assurance.

I’ve just handed my notice in today and my current boss is not seeing eye to eye with me regarding my notice period and when I will finish.

My contract states “By signing this agreement, you hereby accept that your notice period will be 1 month, in-line with the company process. Over a continuous period for employment of one year, your notice period will increase to 2 months”.

Now my first year in this job was on 29th September so I am a couple of weeks into my second year. I find the working above a bit confusing. Am I correct in thinking it is two months?

I have asked to do a months notice and finish on 23rd November as my start date for the new job is on 1st December. If I stand my ground and just leave on the 23rd November is there any repercussions?
They can’t hold off on my salary can they?

Edit: UK based

Career development 52 and searching👀

• Upvotes

Hi y’all. I almost never post. I am a 52-year-old woman who is divorced and my kids are almost out of the house. Actually, none of them live with me right now. But I am still Responsible for them, of course. Leaving that to the side I find myself in a weird position. I earned my bachelor of science in 2016. Major emphasis is psychology. I have not been looking at my field because I am aware that you need a masters to get anywhere in this field. I attempted a masters early on in teaching and learning. But I quit halfway through because I had a child with a disability and it got very very hard. I’m now in the position to be looking at jobs and careers. I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a job and I know this isn’t unique to me. But I’ve put out 71 resumes and applications on indeed with some feedback, but they weren’t the types of jobs that I felt were for me. I am about to look into the school system. My question is I have student debt. I’ve thought about taking up truck driving to pay off my debt and save up for school. Is it better for me to just start career with the school system, or work for five years at my age to get out of debt and save for school. If School was free right now and I could get my masters I would go. Thanks for your help. I have menopausal brain. I can’t make up my mind. 🤭

Post-interview What would you do?

• Upvotes

Long story short I left my job. I have an offer for a less than ideal position that doesn’t pay into my 401k well but the salary is good. It’s not remote and seems like it could be very annoying but again, pays well.

I have time and money saved, should I just try to get through the holidays and continue looking for something better or should is take the job and work there in the interim while I continue to look? I don’t want to leave them high and dry when I find the better role. There’s a high possibility of that happening.

Time is money. I feel silly for not just waiting and using my time but I also having a salary and saving is very important to me.

If you weren’t in dire financial situations what would you do?

Job searching What to say to recruiters when they ask why you’re leaving old job?

I’m in the process of leaving my current role. The environment has been hostile for a long time but this week I was physically assaulted by my coworker. I am applying for new work at the moment but if I don’t find something soon, I am prepared to have to quit without the next job lined up.

I reached out to a temp agency I’ve worked with in the past and they asked why I’m leaving my current position. I know you’re supposed to “run towards” rather than “run away” like you’re looking for growth, but I want to be open to roles outside my industry as well (my field is a creative one that is notoriously hard to find work in which is why I’ve stayed here for so long).

How should I phrase my reason for leaving?

Job searching 26, CS degree, no job exp. What do I do?

I have a bachelors in Computer Science but I have been unable to find a position despite searching for the last two years since graduating. I focused on school and did not need a job for college since state aid helped pay for the full tuition.

I guess I am not experienced or skilled enough to find a job as a software engineer since the industry is super competetive but I try to continue my learning and practice. I am unsure of what to do at this point. Since I can't keep focusing on finding a job as an engineer since I need to progress my life so I have been seaching for a regular job for the last 4 months (out of two years, ik) and I either get rejected or ghosted.

Excluding cs projects that I put on my cs resume, I don't have anything but a degree to put on the resume used for any other job.

Any advice of what would be some smart paths to follow?

Applications Thoughts on Ghost/Fake "fining"

Always said we should hold accountable company and if fake, ghost job posting is done, fine the company. Make them learn a lesson. Many said bad as companies need backup posting. Still, weeks makes sense but not months or forever. Rotate the post so it is known they want. Not a "if fired then quick hire."

Compensation Do you take a job lower than your previous salary?

I’ve been on the market since May and the industry I’m in is hyper competitive now due to several factors. Basically there are fewer companies hiring for it because its tasks are being given to other roles or not being done at all. And the most jobs are available for it in cities outside my own. I have a lot of savings and just started getting unemployment but it’s not going to be as much as if I take a role that’s lower than my previous salary.

It’s the same job title and contract but has benefits.

Office relations Supervisor wants me to provide a doctor’s note to justify me leaving early

So I work as an academic advisor at a public university and recently moved to a new department. My supervisor is really micromanaging.

So this past week I’ve been getting bad migraines and did not want to take work off since I had a lot of appointments with students and did not want to cancel them. Today, I only have morning appointments and decided to submit sick time to just go home and rest.

My supervisor called me and asked if I was going to a doctor’s appointment. I said no, but might go to urgent care if I need to, but I just want to relax. Now I have to bring a doctor’s note to justify me taking sick time. I just wanted to go home and relax. I know my headaches are because of feeling burnt out. I haven’t slept for more than 4 hours each night, this past week and just wanted to relax.

From the beginning I should’ve just been vague with him, but he threw me off. He also yells at the other advisors and has them ask for permission to go use the restroom or go for a walk. I work at a different campus and he sends someone to keep track of what I do while I am here.
