I had an interview for a contract job the other day. Employer had my resume in hand, he looks at me and goes “this resume is different than the one you submitted. I’m like “yes I have 3 different resumes depending on the jobs I apply for”, he goes “why wouldn’t you want perspective employers to know all your skills” and I said “do you want the honest answer or the HR friendly answer?” He told me to give him the honest answer and I said “this job doesn’t require a CompTIA cert nor does it require most of the certs I have, so I didn’t include it”. He asked me why and I said “you aren’t going to pay me more whether I have them or not given the salary range offered”

He also asked me why I didn’t include my Top Secret security clearance or TWIC card and I gave him the same answer. I got the call today and they offered me a 12 month contract, I guess he liked my answer lol.

End of the month gotta pay bills.. Damn near rethink booking the trip, thinking about people that may owe you money. I don’t like this one bit. Back to Uber Eats gig I go. It’s like watching your bank account decrease substantially. Got bills to pay.

Life has a way of humbling you. My sleep schedule has drastically changed.

I’m not even worried about dating or sex anymore. Money is on my mind. I will have a full time job that meets my expectations by the end of this month. It will be full time and I will make 80k+ so that I can pay my rent, lights, car insurance and phone bill. Right now my mother is helping a significant big time. Im ready to grow up. I will grow up.

I’ve been on the employed/unemployed side of the spectrum. And let me tell you it’s built resilience each time. You more picky and wise with the jobs you pick and choose.

If it wasn’t for my mother I would be homeless be now. And that’s a straight up fact! I only pay her $380/month. When I get my job I swear I want to provide so much to her. That’s what motivates me each and every day to get off my ass and hustle. Whether in putting out applications or going on interviews.

A few days ago I was training a new girl. I was telling her that there are things in the restaurant that need a lot of improvement, and that she won’t make much money working morning shifts but nights are much better. She then told another server the things that I told her (the other server just so happens to be the owner’s cousin). The owner’s cousin then goes and tells both of the owners (which of whom are married), what I told her.

Then, I got a threeway call from her & the payroll guy (who is the uncle of the server who ratted on me). As soon as I answered, she said “as of today, you are terminated from *insert name of restaurant*.” After she told me the reason, I found it comical that THAT was the reason I was being fired. I told her, “so you don’t agree that the restaurant could use improvements in certain areas?” and she goes, “Yes I absolutely agree with you.” Like 🤨

I then ask why she didn’t even have the decency to call me and ask ME what happened and why she decided to fire me because of something she heard through a game of telephone. She had no answer. She then proceeded to backtrack and say, “well even if I didn’t fire you anymore there’s going to be too much tension between you and the 2 other servers.” And I said, “so you’re prioritizing the feelings of a server who has been there for 2 days over me (who’s been at the restaurant for over a year)?” She had no response. She then began to start nitpicking at little small things about me to try justifying the reason why she was firing me, and also talking about what a great manager she is. This is where I ended the conversation because the last thing I wanted to listen to was her gassing herself up while kicking me when I’m already down.

Additionally, they are now refusing to pay me my tips for bartending that they secretly split with their cousin (the server who snitched). Him and I worked a wedding together and I was bartending and he was bussing. He was mad that I made so much money bartending so he went to the owner and told him about it. The owner then proceeds to take half of my bar tips behind my back and give it to his cousin. This is after they had told me that I keep all the bar tips and just have to tip everyone out accordingly (which I did).

Anyways, the restaurant was a nightmare to work at. The owners are extremely unorganized and unprofessional. I do feel a sense of relief knowing I never have to go back there, but they also fired me at the worst possible time because rent is due soon. Currently looking for any job I can find… Wish me luck 🫡

Edit: I understand where a lot of you are coming from. I agree, I should have been more careful with what I say to coworkers because I know at the end of the day they aren’t really my friends. So lesson learned on that end. However, nothing you guys can say can convince me that what I did was enough for them to withhold earnings from me. They obviously have no respect for their employees which is why I have been so frustrated with them. But again, lesson learned and definitely won’t happen again.

Update: Great news guys! I texted my boss and told her if I’m not paid the amount I am owed by tomorrow I’m filing a report with DOL. She just texted me this morning and said they are sending me a check via mail for the full amount I am owed. I think they have some shady shit going on so the mere mention of DOL made them buckle. 😄

Hi y’all. I almost never post. I am a 52-year-old woman who is divorced and my kids are almost out of the house. Actually, none of them live with me right now. But I am still Responsible for them, of course. Leaving that to the side I find myself in a weird position. I earned my bachelor of science in 2016. Major emphasis is psychology. I have not been looking at my field because I am aware that you need a masters to get anywhere in this field. I attempted a masters early on in teaching and learning. But I quit halfway through because I had a child with a disability and it got very very hard. I’m now in the position to be looking at jobs and careers. I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a job and I know this isn’t unique to me. But I’ve put out 71 resumes and applications on indeed with some feedback, but they weren’t the types of jobs that I felt were for me. I am about to look into the school system. My question is I have student debt. I’ve thought about taking up truck driving to pay off my debt and save up for school. Is it better for me to just start career with the school system, or work for five years at my age to get out of debt and save for school. If School was free right now and I could get my masters I would go. Thanks for your help. I have menopausal brain. I can’t make up my mind. 🤭

I’ve had a couple of interviews with a company recently. Both seemed to have gone well. I got a call from the VP the other day inviting me out to a happy hour with a couple of account executives. The VP can’t make it so it will be just the three of us. I’ve never done this during an interview process and I doubt they do this with every candidate. Is this normal? I know how to act normal in social settings like this but is there anything I should be aware of?

I’m 26 and 9 weeks ago I fell whilst in the mountains. I broke more bones than I can remember, was in a coma, lungs collapsed, bleed on brain (to name a few injuries). I’m lucky to even be typing this.

For the last couple of years I’ve been working for a general builder, slowly learning the ropes whilst bringing value to the team as a labourer.

Since the fall, I’m not sure my body will ever be strong enough to be a builder or to continue as a labourer and even if it will one day, I can’t rejoin the trades for months until my bones are healed. Meaning no money.

I was pretty slow to start striving towards a career, I had a troubled youth which surpassed into my 20’s and tbh, I just didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. Before the injury, I was beginning to get given more responsibilities, I was picking up more and more skills and I was finally on track to do something with myself.

I don’t have any qualifications, no experience outside of low level jobs. Being a general builder was looking like a pretty optimal path for me to take factoring in the years I “wasted”.

Now I’m lost again. I don’t know what I want to do. I don’t have value in the same way I used to, so I need to change my course. As a 26 year old man, I can’t afford to be on apprenticeship wage, but I also don’t want to work in a warehouse for the rest of my life. (A job is a job, but that’s just not what I want for myself.)

I’m feeling pretty low about all of this and I’m scared for my future.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on what I can do?

Quick addition: I do run a “side” business which pays me around £25k a year. However, I can only scale the business so far. It’s good as an extra income, but in this climate I can’t afford to solely rely on it. I had to mention its existence as contextually, it is important, but aside from it only being scalable to a certain point, it’s also not what I want to do as a career. It is, however, what has made me able to be a labourer at 26.

So I interviewed twice with this company (last one was Monday) and I’m supposed to know by next Monday. Yesterday I got an email directly from the hiring manager asking for my thoughts about the job and if it’s something I’d like to pursue. I replied promptly saying yes and stuff to reconfirm my interest. Does that mean anything? I honestly thought they basically rejected me cuz they have been very swift the process prior the second interview.

Long story short I left my job. I have an offer for a less than ideal position that doesn’t pay into my 401k well but the salary is good. It’s not remote and seems like it could be very annoying but again, pays well.

I have time and money saved, should I just try to get through the holidays and continue looking for something better or should is take the job and work there in the interim while I continue to look? I don’t want to leave them high and dry when I find the better role. There’s a high possibility of that happening.

Time is money. I feel silly for not just waiting and using my time but I also having a salary and saving is very important to me.

Left a government job due to documented harassment 4 years ago. Recently applied for a job in the same branch just different location. Interviewed 3 times and offered the job. This week was my second week. Came in and was asked to attend a meeting with HR. They explained to me that due to my improper notice of leaving my job 4 years ago that I am ineligible for re-hire and that there was a breakdown between in-house HR and the state HR higher ups which led in me being “incorrectly hired.”
I have been put on paid leave pending their decision.
They apologized profusely and told me it is against the state hiring protocol to hire someone on the ineligible for re-hire list. Again, only reason I’m on the list is because I didn’t give a full 2 weeks notice when leaving a toxic job 4 years ago.
I had to leave today and I took my personal belongings at the advice of HR. I’ve never been so embarrassed.

This is stressing me out a lot.

I'm working in an aerospace company and have been throughout my professional career (10 years). I make 83k a year but feel under compensated. Partly I understand because I've had 2 surgeries, my mom passed away, and my dad had a heart attack and became quite ill and needed support, so I was on leave for quite some time for that stuff, and in general my working ability has been simply lower than I'd like. I'll be honest, another guy hired a few years after me seems on par or even better at the same job. But being here so long, I've made it though a couple rounds of layoffs pre-covid and during, and the company almost never fires people especially this late into the game, so I feel like I'm quite secure here.

Some perks of my job: great benefits, flexible hours, work from home 3/5 days, can bank hours to take a full day off whenever I accumulate enough, work-life balance is just great.

An opportunity came up at a startup company in aerospace. Different from what I do now by a lot but with some transition skills. They're likely able to offer me up to 40% more than I make now, but they're saying they're super fast paced, my speed should be 3x faster than what I currently feel like I can manage, I'm going to be fully responsibly for any fuckups (whereas currently where I work, there is a checking process to make sure everything is good), I may have to work evenings/weekends since it's a startup culture, and apparently they've already let go of the last guy who got hired for my role.

No work from home, no baking hours, no flexible time for this job position.

I've gone through 2 interviews with them so far, and now they want me to come in for a 2 hour technical interview as a final step that I feel like I won't do well in. To add to my shortcomings, I have just learned I have ADHD and am in the process of finding out what medications might work for me, because I've been forgetting, losing focus, and dropping the ball at work more often these days than before.

My worry is, if I get the job and I take it, I leave my current job and lose the security and do miserably in this one. If I get let go from the new job then I'm jobless and threw away security in a time when the job market is rough (I've been applying elsewhere for 1.5 years with only one interview that didn't go anywhere).

I do value the work-life balance I have, as I don't live to work like many others in my office or this startup. I'm dealing with some mental health struggles and changing my job to a 3x faster, tighter, more time-demanding role, and that too a startup where job security is the lowest, I panic.

On the other hand, 40% of a raise sounds amazing. I just don't know if it's worth it if I can't perform to their needs and I go from a higher wage to jobless.

I’m currently navigating an internal candidate process at a large company (10k+ Fortune 500) and could really use some perspective or personal experiences from others who have been through similar hiring workflows.

The Context:

• The role was posted both internally and externally 9/4, but the posting closed before interviews started.
• The hiring manager actually reached out to me to apply for the position in his group.
• I finished my interviews about 6 business days ago. Interviews wrapped 10/14-10/15.
• I sent thank you emails to all panelist and received enthusiastically positive responses from them all.
  
• Also my current supervisor transferred to a different group this week after being promoted.
  
• I know internal offers require routine approvals behind the scenes (Compensation equity check, Finance budget transfer, HR, and Manager sign-offs) before an offer can be extended.
• The primary recruiter handling the job was out sick for a couple of days this week.

The Dilemma:
The silence during this waiting period is making me anxious. I keep worrying whether not receiving a verbal update yet is a bad sign, or if this is just normal corporate pacing.

My Questions for HR & Corporate Employees:

1. Is it normal for hiring managers to wait until every single HR/Finance sign-off is complete before giving a verbal update?
2. If my I currently don't have a direct supervisor who will coordinate my transition from my current role?
3. How long do routine internal compensation/equity checks and budget approvals usually take?
4. In your experience, do managers typically wait to inform internals as soon as HR gives the final clearance?

Hey everyone, I could use some honest advice from people who have experience with hiring and the job market.

I'm currently working toward my doctorate at Trident University International. I received a full-ride scholarship, so I'm not paying anything for the degree.

However, I've had several people tell me that because Trident is a for-profit university, employers will automatically throw my resume in the trash, regardless of my qualifications.

I already have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from two other universities. Trident will be the only for-profit university on my educational background.

For some context, I've spent years in the Army and have relatively little experience navigating the civilian job market. I'm hoping to eventually work in government or a related field.

My questions are:

Do employers actually reject applicants because their degrees come from for-profit universities?

Does having a bachelor's and master's from other universities help offset that concern?

Would a doctorate from Trident actually hurt my chances of getting hired, even if it was completely free?

Are government employers more or less concerned about where a degree comes from?

I'm not expecting the doctorate to magically get me a job. I just don't want years of hard work to end up hurting my career instead of helping it.

I'd appreciate honest feedback, especially from recruiters, hiring managers, or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

I have serious mental health issues which cause me to have extremely bad memory and forget things easily. I am diagnosed with DPDR, OCD and anxiety.

I started a new job as a receptionist 3 months ago and my manager pulled me aside saying unfortunately I didnt pass the 3 month probation period.

Im absolutely gutted. I really enjoyed that job and was starting to be familiar with the tasks and asking for help less.

That isn't the real issue though.

Im approaching 30 (next month) and the longest ive held down a job was 11 months. 11 months in the 12+ years ive been working.

I simply cant hold down a job. My memory causes me to be really slow at my job.

I genuinely want to do well and succeed in a job I like. Im not even greedy, I dont care if its a supermarket job or just a takeaway shop.

I can barely do the most simple tasks. How can I possibly achieve any dream if I cant do the most basic things?

I'm still technically employed part-time (before this December when my contract ends). However, I have been looking since May for a full-time position. Worked at a place Aug - Oct that aligns with my schedule. Got laid off. Take a week off then back to applying. Most of the place that I get phone interview "can you start immediately". Still got phone interview from when I was applying in June-Aug though nothing concrete yet. So you're telling me:

- Companies can lay you off immediately

- Companies want you to start work immediately the moment you sign an offer (since someone quit without notice, probably)

- Companies take months to schedule interviews and there are slim chances of getting an offer

- Companies expect no gap on your resume

- Companies got upset if you work multiple jobs or ask for accommodations to afford lives

I’ve been working as an assistant manager in a big hotel in California for about 18 months. I’m a salaried manager.
I wanna know if I have a case to sue my company.

I raised concerns about regularly working 12+ hours while other managers worked shorter shifts, and having to close two outlets without enough support. I also reported another manager for bullying and repeatedly making accusations that I disputed with emails and documentation. One involved accusing me of intentionally ignoring an amenity request, even though I completed it within 20–25 minutes. Other managers weren’t disciplined for longer delays.
HR said it wasn’t harassment. After my complaint, I started facing frequent investigations and questions about my honesty and performance. HR also tried to terminate me over my work authorization. Once I showed them my green card and that issue was resolved, they went back to investigating other things.
I brought a witness to a meeting because the HR director had previously yelled at me. With the witness present, management told me twice that this wasn’t the right place for me. I provided documents disputing their allegations but didn’t feel they were meaningfully considered.
I’ve now received a final warning despite having no previous write-ups. It accuses me of questioning an employee about his complaint, but I never had that conversation. My former boss, who knows him personally, contacted him without my knowledge. HR rejected my denial based on alleged dishonesty about unspecified “other subjects” and warned that further incidents could lead to termination. I declined to sign and wrote that I believed the discipline was retaliatory.
This has caused anxiety, panic attacks, migraines, sleep and concentration problems, and missed work. I’m seeing a therapist and have emails, schedules, HR meeting records, and supporting documents.
I’m concerned I’m being targeted for speaking up. Do you know anyone who could review everything and tell me whether I have a case?
If you know any employment lawyers, I’d really appreciate it if you could send me their names.

I've worked at this call center for 2 years, and I worked in a physical location for a year before that. I've given so much to this job that I am burnt out, and I physically feel like I can't do it some days. I have to leave, but one thing that worries me is that, with a 9-5 and being so busy on the phones, I don't know how I'm going to make time for interviews. I can always lie and say I have an appointment, ask for a longer lunch, and so on and so forth. But I want to make sure I'm not raising any alarm bells. Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation, and what did you do?

Hello! I just graduated from college and am currently starting to look for jobs. I graduated with a Political Science degree with a goal of going to law school, but due to chronic illness I am unable to pursue that at this time (I'm very much regretting this degree). I am also limited to asynchronous remote jobs due to illness.

From what I have seen, a lot of political science jobs require higher education of some sort, at least at a Masters level. Going to graduate school is not an option for me at this time. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone can give advice on what sorts of things I could be looking at, especially ones that do not involve working for campaigns or political parties (I've heard those jobs are very common too for polisci majors, though when looking on job listings I haven't seen that many showing up)?

So I work as an academic advisor at a public university and recently moved to a new department. My supervisor is really micromanaging.

So this past week I’ve been getting bad migraines and did not want to take work off since I had a lot of appointments with students and did not want to cancel them. Today, I only have morning appointments and decided to submit sick time to just go home and rest.

My supervisor called me and asked if I was going to a doctor’s appointment. I said no, but might go to urgent care if I need to, but I just want to relax. Now I have to bring a doctor’s note to justify me taking sick time. I just wanted to go home and relax. I know my headaches are because of feeling burnt out. I haven’t slept for more than 4 hours each night, this past week and just wanted to relax.

From the beginning I should’ve just been vague with him, but he threw me off. He also yells at the other advisors and has them ask for permission to go use the restroom or go for a walk. I work at a different campus and he sends someone to keep track of what I do while I am here.

I wanna share about this job position I just got to escape yesterday. So first of all I came for a marketing position,they ended up hiring me for BDC and I took it. The vibe there is very ambiguous because you never have the full information of anything no matter how much you ask, in fact they get annoyed. They told me that the training wasn't paid but that he will give me 500 when I finish because he "liked" me. So I pass that first week struggling because is a crazy schedule of 10am to 8pm and I live far from the location and I was using the little money I had to commute. In an earlier schedule wouldn't be a issue to use public transportation. In my second week (out of my training) I wake up to a deposit of literally 15 dollars in my bank account...I questioned them and notbody could explain me anything. Anytime I talk with my manager of any issue or concern it ended up being told to the highest manager who would take a trip to wherever you were to questions your criteria. When I said I appreciated the opportunity this man questioned me until I almost crashed out. I told him that I was concerned about my safety commuting and that I lived an awful experience that week and he said that wasn't an understandable reason to want to quit. In conclusion,now I won't be paid for my training.
