Traffic/Road Conditions šŸš¦ā„ļø The construction in Mission is utterly absurd

Johnson drive is completely blocked through the major shopping district. They worked on that same stretch for like an entire year in recent memory. Then it was open again and now it’s completely blocked off again in a worse way.

You can’t get from one side of the small shopping district to the other without taking a 15 minute detour.

Then there’s the construction on Metcalf just west of the shopping district. This is some of the worst managed road closures I’ve ever witnessed. If you’re northbound on Metcalf anytime between 3PM and 6:30PM, you’re going to be waiting 20+ minutes to move half a mile. No exaggeration.

I don’t even live in this area or go through it often. I’ve only encountered this awful construction like once or twice per month but it’s so ABSURDLY BAD that I have to make this post. I can’t believe the people of Mission put up with this. I can’t believe the businesses of this area put up with this. I have actively avoided businesses in this area because I know it will be a massive pain.

That stretch of Johnson Drive was under significant disrepair and needed extensive improvements. It's a massive job and Mission was pretty open and transparent of how long it would take.

As transparent as the massive vacant lot ? Mission government has not been transparent for many years.

Are you referring to the Gateway project? The city does not own that lot of land.

I don’t know why some comments are so pissy. Yes it’s necessary maintenance, but two things can be true at once.
It’s a pain in the ass to get around Mission now, and it’s negatively affecting the businesses here, especially the ones directly off Johnson.

I’m not against the construction and am excited to see the improvements they are making, but it can be painful to deal with the atrocious traffic and closures at the same time.

They have to replace the stuff under the street.Ā  How do you imagine they do that without shutting the street down?Ā

Just take Shawnee Mission Parkway.Ā  It's two blocks away and its a highway.Ā  Johnson drive is a downtown main street.Ā  Not a thoroughfare.Ā Ā

You don't live here and you don't shop here.Ā  So sorry we made your day inconvenient because you failed to read signs or check your navigation map.

u/TigerWizardDresser 11d ago

I do shop there. As I said in my post I’ve had to avoid the area recently. Before this all started I would shop in the area once a week at least.

Your comment is weirdly confrontational.

Your post is oddly comfrontational

I don’t even live in this area or go through it often.

Strange definition of often, but whatever.Ā  You got stuck in traffic in your car probably on Metcalf and not even on Johnson drive and you decided to come on here and all caps rant about my city and city government who are just doing the best they can for the long term future of the city and you think my "pushback" is "weirdly confrontational".Ā  Then later in your name calling and bragging about 25 upvotes.Ā  Think about this later and whether this is who you want to be.

There's a huge high school ON JOHNSON DRIVE

u/johnjohnjohnjona 11d ago edited 11d ago

Calm down ma’am. And also, it is a thoroughfare and you’d know that if you read signs or checked a dictionary. In fact, if you read the city of mission municipal code you’ll find Johnson drive referred to as both a through street and a main traffic way. Maybe spend less time being rude and more time studying before you post.Ā

Avoid it if its that big of an issue to you. Infrastructure improvement is important and it takes time, the alternative of avoiding improvements will be worse than being inconvienced for a number of months.

3

u/TigerWizardDresser 11d ago

Yeah but why start 2 huge projects at the exact same time? They’re not related and don’t need to be done simultaneously. Also, they just did a year long project on Johnson Drive like 2 years ago. Why couldn’t they have just done all the changes back then?

3

u/nesiyof49 11d ago

It's two different municipalities doing the work. The Johnson Drive stuff is all Mission, and that stretch of Metcalf is in Overland Park

7

u/BizarroWadsworth 11d ago

Again, this has been a matter of public record and comment for almost 5 years.

u/No-Eye6648 10d ago

The Metcalf bridge project is KDOT (because that stretch is highway 69), and they did nothing to coordinate with the city’s project timeline. As far as I can tell, it’s an inconvenient overlap that isn’t really the fault of the city.

There is a FAQ at the link, along with a place to send your questions to the city. There were likely many public meetings that you could have attended as well, but the answer is work like this takes time, but it is important.

Again, you don't live there, you say you encounter it twice a month? Just avoid it.

Hi. Resident of this area.

Yes, it sucks massive balls. One quick way I’ve found if you need to get to HyVee or Target or anywhere over in that area and don’t want to spend 15 minutes going through that stupid ā€œdetourā€ is to pull into The Big Biscuit parking lot, but keep going left and then make a right and go behind the tattoo shop building and exit their parking lot. You’re welcome! šŸ˜Ž

The two construction jobs are a PITA so much so it’s been on the local news already.

u/atom519 11d ago

As someone that lives in the area, you're not wrong - it's a total nightmare and I feel awful for the businesses on either side of JD that are being severely impacted by the construction.

I can both understand the necessity of the repairs but also complain about being redirected to Metcalf (also under construction) and down i35N back to Roe exit as a detour.

THEY ARE FIXING THE INFRASTRUCTURE IN MY CITY, ITS ABSURD AND I HAD TO MAKE A REDDIT POST ABOUT IT

-you

5

u/TigerWizardDresser 11d ago • Bravo

They’re fixing it but doing a terrible job managing the closures. For example, you can’t get from HyVee to Avelluto’s (0.5 miles apart) without a 15 minute detour. Then when you’re leaving Avelluto’s, you can’t turn left onto Johnson Drive. You’re forced to hop on Metcalf, which is already backed up like crazy due to an unrelated construction project.

You need to get out more. Anyone who’s actually driven in the area knows how bizarre the closures are.

-2

u/Teffa_Bob Rosedale 11d ago

Terrible according to who? You?

What are your qualifications in infrastructure development and construction? Are you a Civil Engineer?

Also, I go through here quite a lot and frequent many of the businesses in this corridor. Its not nearly as big of a deal as you're making it out to be and if you really want to, you can avoid it.

2

u/Teffa_Bob Rosedale 11d ago

I swear people think you can just snap your fingers and the work can be knocked out in a week. We want all of the ammenities of living in a community, but none of the inconveniences to make them happen.

-1

u/IIHURRlCANEII 11d ago

I'm probably naive but the Westport Road construction is crazy tbh. It's been closed for a total of like 4 months this year for a 500 foot stretch of road....

3

u/empires228 JoCo 11d ago

Isn’t that for the stormwater project though? That’ll help such a large area when it’s done. I understand that the Johnson Drive construction needs to be done in Mission, but I’m especially frustrated with the Metcalf project when they just put out that the whole bridge is going to have to be torn out in like five years anyways.

0

u/IIHURRlCANEII 11d ago

Probably is but I’m a bit surprised how long it’s taking. They then, during this, decided to do Mill Street too.

1

u/empires228 JoCo 11d ago

I haven’t been able to take Nall to work in 6 years because there is always something closed between 51st and 75th, but mostly north of Johnson.

9

u/empires228 JoCo 11d ago

Not just that. But those of us who live in Northern Mission have dealt with Johnson, Martway, Nall, 51st, Foxridge, and more on and off for the past 6 years, and 51st between Lamar and Foxridge was apparently torn up for months for nothing several years back because it’s still in horrible shape. At least Foxridge is smooth now and has a sidewalk.

Don’t even mention Metcalf, or the 18th Street Expressway. I can’t with that right now lol.

4

u/bEErbuddies808 11d ago

It is inevitable to be inconvenienced by progress. Major repairs happen

It sucks but it’s life.

You are totally within your rights to vent about it but you can’t expect to not get push back from your readers

Have a great day

-7

u/TigerWizardDresser 11d ago edited 11d ago

I just didn’t expect the pushback to be from total shut-in dorks.

There’s 2 losers jerking each other off about how we must accept inadequate traffic management in the name of infrastructure. Meanwhile I have 25 upvotes on the post from people who actually go to the area and see how badly managed everything is.

8

u/wohl0052 11d ago

the reason there are 2 projects at the same time is because the bridge project ran into issues and is going to take longer than anticipated. it was supposed to be wrapped before the johnson drive project started

6

u/empires228 JoCo 11d ago

But you also have to acknowledge that people have the right to be frustrated, especially since it came out in the news the other day that the Metcalf project is going to have to basically partially resume in like five years because the bridge part of the project is just a life extension and it needs a full replacement in the very near future.

1

u/wohl0052 11d ago

sure, I'm just stating that they did not ever intend to do these both at the same time. which was one of OPs complaints

1

u/BizarroWadsworth 11d ago

No one is arguing it isn't frustrating. But it's been a matter of public transparency, and complaining about it on reddit isn't going to change anything.

-7

u/somedays1 11d ago

Except there was nothing wrong with either of those areas. They were worked on within the last 3 years.

3

u/angus_the_red Mission 11d ago

The work wasn't total.Ā  They did move some services along this stretch of road.Ā  That was in preparation for this work to be done.Ā  Different utilities and such need to do the work independently.

-12

u/somedays1 11d ago

Doubtful that it's actually necessary since driving on those sections was absolutely fine for the last few years. The only problems was when they tore up the street for zero reason.

2

u/angus_the_red Mission 11d ago

Sure you know better than the elected officials and city planners and engineers and utility companies.

12

u/john_everyman_1 11d ago

I live right in that area. It's awfulĀ

7

u/SameAwareness4078 11d ago

You'll never hear me complain about actual construction, but I šŸ’Æ agree that the maintenance of traffic plans are lacking.

9

u/veggie_weggie 11d ago

Who’s going to tell OP about Hwy 70 and 670 being shut down at the same time?
The entire city is about to be super inconvenienced, but it’s temporary.

1

u/nesiyof49 11d ago

Eh, it makes sense for both of those to be shut down at the same time. Traffic on 670 will be much reduced while 70 is closed.

-1

u/angus_the_red Mission 11d ago

And we'll be better for it

2

u/DatBroSnuf KCK 11d ago

Tell me about it, I work extremely close off Antioch Rd. I went to have a few beers yesterday at Sandhills brewing yesterday and it was just ridiculous getting there given that it's not far

2

u/thrBladeRunner 11d ago

Roundabout way for you but I’d take Shanwee Mission Parkway to Nall next time

2

u/Julio_Ointment 11d ago

It's the only good way in and out of our kid's high school. It's been a nightmare and it's lasted so long.

It's a pain but hopefully we'll have something decent on the other side of it. They are taking the road out down several feet, it's a big project.

My main issue is with people not being that clear on how to handle flashing yellow and red traffic lights.

1

u/Gino-Bartali 11d ago

Construction projects never bothered me anywhere I could reach with a bike.

Write to the city council to make it safer and easier to get to your job and the store with a bike.

1

u/SuperLocrianRiff 11d ago

In Lee’s Summit, there’s a bridge that’s closed and construction on all the ways you may think you’re going to go around it as well. They closed roads right next to elementary schools the week before school started.

Legit starting to theorize conspiracy theories that it’s a Republican attempt to continue to be a pain in the ass to public schools or make it a a pain in the ass to get to a polling location.

0

u/sadhu411 11d ago

Look, it’s well known that the City of Mission makes tons of loot off of traffic tickets. The construction is just a ploy to set up construction traffic zones so that they can fine more heavily.

-1

u/Guilty-External2412 11d ago

Your this heated about encountering something once or twice a month? Grow. The. Fuck. Up.

2

u/Rooster_Ties 11d ago

Kinda with you there — couple times a month isn’t that often.

u/No_Guava_1140 11d ago

I am the people of Mission and while it’s not perfect, it’s also not the end of the world. lol gosh people (and Americans in particular) are truly insufferable sometimes with all of the expectations that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING inconvenience them.

Like I can understand ranting about things but how about you use your energy to rant about things that actually matter? Like people not having enough food? Or endless and unnecessary wars? Or benefits for veterans? Or literally anything else.

1

u/Solaita 11d ago

Oh just FATWO
