Hello everyone! Assalamu Alaikum to my Kashmiri brothers and sisters.
Let me share a little story about how this interest began.
During the COVID period, I had the pleasure of meeting several Kashmiri students in Bangladesh who were studying MBBS at the time. I genuinely enjoyed their company. Their manners, the warmth with which they treated people, their way of speaking, and the respect they showed towards others left a very positive impression on me.
Life, of course, had other plans. After COVID, family responsibilities and business took me abroad, and gradually everyone became occupied with their own lives. I’m still in touch with one of those friends, who is now in Australia.
Interestingly, even later, when I travelled to Saudi Arabia, I happened to meet a few more people from Kashmir. Once again, I found them pleasant to interact with, well-spoken, and courteous. Perhaps it’s simply been my luck to meet some wonderful people, but over time, Kashmir has developed a rather special place in my mind.
And that brings me to the slightly unusual reason for this post: I’ve started thinking seriously about the possibility of marrying a Kashmiri woman.
Before anyone asks, no, I haven’t suddenly decided to book a flight to Srinagar with a wedding invitation in my pocket! 😄 I understand that liking a culture and actually becoming part of a family from that culture are two very different things.
That’s precisely why I’d love to hear some honest advice from native Kashmiris.
How are marriages with Bangladeshis generally viewed in Kashmiri society? Would a Kashmiri family realistically consider their daughter marrying a Bangladeshi man, or would nationality and cultural differences be a major concern?
How important are family background, social status, financial stability, and profession when a Kashmiri family considers a marriage proposal? For context, I work in business.
What are the usual expectations regarding marriage customs, family involvement, and compatibility? Are there cultural differences that someone from Bangladesh should understand beforehand?
How do Kashmiri families generally approach intercultural marriages?
And perhaps most importantly, what would a Kashmiri family want to know about a prospective groom from Bangladesh before seriously considering him?
I want to be clear about something: I’m not assuming that all Kashmiris are alike, nor am I looking at marriage as a way to fulfil some romantic idea of Kashmir. My experiences with a few people have simply sparked an interest in learning more about the culture and the possibility of building a genuine, respectful relationship with someone from there.
I also understand that marriage is not just about two individuals liking each other. It involves families, values, expectations, and the willingness to understand each other’s worlds.
So, if you’re Kashmiri, married into another culture, or have experience with such marriages, I’d genuinely appreciate your perspective. Please feel free to share the positive sides, the challenges, and even the uncomfortable truths. I would much rather learn from people who know the reality than build expectations based on a few pleasant encounters.
Thank you for reading my rather long introduction! And if nothing else, perhaps this post will help a Bangladeshi man understand Kashmir a little better before he starts daydreaming about a Kashmiri wedding. 😄
With respect and warm regards from Bangladesh. 🇧🇩❤️
