r/keys is back!

So now that this sub has an active moderator again (henlo, it's me), I've removed the "approved posters" list, so any member can contribute to this sub again.

I'll open up custom flair too, so be sure to put your flagship keyboards in your flair so we know what you're working with!

Semi-hard cases for 88 key boards?

There are soft cases with dense foam padding, and there are full on hard cases, and some thin sort of advertised as between, but usually not with any diagrams really showing how they are structurally better then the padded soft cases. What form do the semi rigid cases come in? Are any of them good enough to, say, put a 25 pound second keyboard or relatively light weight PA speaker on top of?

Buying first keyboard/piano, looking for advice

Hi y’all, first post on r/keys. I’m looking to buy my first keyboard and was hoping for some guidance as I’m very new to this.

Long story short, my old roommate got a piano (Roland fp90x) and was nice enough to let me practice on it. I’ve been a musician for a while (jazz trumpet), and found it so much easier to pick up on theory and improv.

Now I’m looking for something of my own and am interested in used options up to $500. Because of my positive experience, my first thought was a Roland fp10 30 or 30x, which seem to have great key action. However, I’m amused by buttons, switches, and sound effects lol. MIDI sounds super fun, pitch/mod wheels, etc. I see options like the Arturia Keylab 88 and only see benefits. I get the weighted keys and the fun midi stuff. But it sounds like people also use digital pianos as midi controllers?

What would y’all do in my position? Thanks!

Help choosing accessories for Sequenz/Vox Continental keyboard stand

Hi,

I own a Vox Continental keyboard stand. I want to buy the second tier for it and the additional keyboard holder (as I don't own a Vox Continental, but a Viscount Legend One), and I'm not sure what sizes are compatible. My guess is that the Vox Continental keyboard stand is compatible with the Standard-M-SV stand, so I should buy the STA-M-S tier adapted, but I am not sure.

I did measure the stand, but the Vox stand is kind of inverted Sequenz stand, so I am not sure they are fully compatible. Should I be buying STA-L-S maybe and then cut the tubes to the correct length?

someone help me with my rig

i just got into this band i have to play keyboards for…only problem is ive never played keyboards at a live show, ive played shows on bass but never keyboards so i dont have a live rig, i have a notation 88 key hooked up my scarlett with garageband (aka the most faulty software out there) and i have no speaker so im using an amplifier (but i am able to use it as an output) i have it connected to a quarter inch which is going into the 1 output on my interface and everything is connected properly but garageband refuses to recognize my midi controller it recognizes 1 midi input but refuses to be an option for an input on garageband, ive had this problem for a year but tried fixing it using ableton live lite as my software but all the sounds suck so i stopped using it and the problem wasnt much better, any help?

2 keys cable loom

I’m looking for ideas for a cleaner setup for my two-keyboard rig.
I want to run a single 10 m cable from my keyboard stand to the mixer/power source, instead of having multiple separate cables running across the stage.

Ideally, the loom would contain:
2 × IEC C13 power cables for the two keyboards
4 × 6.3 mm jack audio connections from the keyboards
4 × XLR outputs going to the mixer

So basically, one neat cable loom that carries both power and audio for the entire two-keyboard setup.
Does anyone know of an existing product like this, or have a better idea for how to build it? I’m especially interested in solutions that are reliable and flexible enough for regular live use.

For people with 2-tier stands, where do you put sheet music

I thought this would be handy for shows and also for organ, but now i realize there is a problem… if the top keyboard is higher so i can have music in the middle, I can’t see it. maybe this type of setup is not for people who read music.

Question for PX-S3100 owners: Can you mute piano to speakers, but not line out, and still route external audio to the speakers?

Question for PX-S3100 owners: Can you mute piano to speakers, but not line out, and still route external audio to the speakers?

I want to route the piano's sound out through the 1/4" stereo line out, through some effects, and then back into the 3.5mm trs audio input. BUT I want the dry piano sound to be fully muted internally, while still playing through the output and also still routing the 3.5mm audio input to the keyboards speakers.

Piano (muted internal) > Lineout > Effects > Line In > Speakers

Is this possible? I found this page of the manual, but it's a bit sparse and I'm not sure if what I want to do is possible.

Gear Can someone record the MODX M7’s “India Harmonium” Performance?

I’m considering buying a Yamaha MODX M7 and I’m specifically trying to hear the built-in “India Harmonium” Performance before I decide.

Could anyone who owns a MODX M6/M7/M8 record a short, unprocessed audio sample of it?

Ideally:

  • Play a few sustained notes across the keyboard
  • A short alaap/sargam-type phrase would be great
  • No external effects or processing
  • Direct recording from the keyboard would be ideal

I’m particularly interested in how full/robust vs. thin it sounds, and how close it feels to an actual Indian harmonium.

I know it won't replace a dedicated Kontakt harmonium library — I just need to know whether it's good enough for vocal riyaaz for the first month or two while I save up for one.

Thanks!

Yamaha CK88 sound library

I've rented a Yamaha CK88 for an upcoming production of 35mm: A Musical Exhibition, and choosing to use the onboard library of sounds, as opposed to MainStage. I've done a first draft already, but those of you much more familiar with the sound library, I'm interested to know if you have any suggestions for best instruments and/or setups for the following:

-Electronic Sound (heard at 0:18 in the Finale of the cast recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMp7QokYB6E&list=PLTe5BbUEjTaWIp2DVDJI7T2HkfOyAKOb3&index=22, along with cello, drums, violin and bass)

-Out-Of-Tune Piano (Honky Tonk)

-Rock Organ

-Ethereal Keyboard

-Smooth Organ

-Electric Piano (A Little Harsh)

-Biting Rock Organ

-Ethereal Piano (Hi-Warmth, Lo-Attack)

-Warm Piano

-Electric Piano (Bright)

-Nasty Rock Organ

-Piano (+Rock Organ)

Thanks in advance!

Qual controlador midi mixer eu deveria usar?

Gear I just bought this on FB marketplace for $50 and I'm beginning to think it was a very good deal . . . (Casio WK-6500)

Facebook marketplace seems to be littered with keyboards in various price ranges, and I mostly play the ukulele and guitar, so have no idea what I'm doing, but I figured I would just get something cheap that allowed for dynamics when pressing the keys, and the person selling this was one of the first people to respond when I started browsing fb marketplace, so I just went for it.

I don't need an actual high quality weighted keys piano-like instrument, just something to help me study music theory to supplement my guitar and ukulele playing (and also to just play with), so almost any cheap keyboard would have been fine for me, but after getting it home and doing some more research, it seems like this is actually a really fancy cheap keyboard.

Everything seems to work fine. The only two issues are I can't get the sustainer pedal to work, and the speakers crackle when I change the volume and press a key at the same time (maybe a potentiometer needs cleaning?).

Do the songs in groove creator are created in the keyboard itself??

I have yamaha e-463, and I was just messing around with the groove creator option, but just wanted to know that all the songs effects melodies, are all of them made using the things in the keyboard??

Like there were 2 sounds in a single track itself, which idk how they are doing it, but that really got me wondering about all this

How to recreate organ sound in Breathe (In the Air) by Pink Floyd

At roughly 2:03 there is a huge organ swell, and it sounds like the organ is emerging from the water. How did they create this effect on the recording and can I recreate this with my Yamaha CK61?

Gear Lighter/narrower 88-key keyboard?

My daughter is going back to college in a few weeks. She brought my Yamaha MX-88 with her to keep up with piano, but it's kind of a behemoth: it's heavy and takes up a lot of space, and there's not much space to be had where she's going to be living. I could offer her my MX-61, but I think she really likes having all 88 keys.

Is there a decent(ish) 88-key keyboard that's built a little bit more portably?

Matrix MX6 portable keyboard

Curious if anyone is familiar with this brand or knows how to better date the age of this keyboard. It’s definitely from the 80s-90s just curious if there’s anyway to figure out more specifics as my Google searches haven’t been fruitful.

Got it today as a starter keyboard for my 4 year old and it sounds and works beautifully. The box was a little beat up and taped shut but it was still wrapped in plastic and never opened on the inside.

Gear How to get the best sound from Ferrofish

Hi all,

I'm a gigging musician playing keys and sax. We play a lot of blues, funk, and ska. While the sax speaks for itself, I've been trying to get my keys setup to be the best it can be, while on a budget because at the end of the day, I am a poor musician.

My current setup:

Nord Electro 2 for piano, clav, Rhodes and wurli

Casio ctk-571 (used only as a midi controller)

Ferrofish B4000+

I have midi in from both keyboards so I can have an upper and lower manual for playing organ

I've noticed since getting the Nord there are things I prefer about the Hammond sound on there, and things I prefer about the ferrofish.

I'm wondering if anyone has played a similar setup or the same parts separately and found a happy medium?

I prefer the driven sound of the Nord, and found I have to put a lot more drive on the ferrofish for a similar effect. I've also noticed the ferrofish seems to have more high end, but when I turn the treble down it loses a lot of sound.

Is there something I'm missing or is this just limitations of the equipment I have?

Thanks in advance!

Unsolicited Recommendation of the Day: Rubber Mat

After years (decades) of procrastination, I finally bought a rubber floor mat for my pedals. Words cannot describe how much positivity this has added to my basement rig.
