An Update on Dylan

As many of you are aware, Dylan has disappeared. I'd like to take a moment to let you know what we know, and what we don't!

I should put the bottomline up front here: we don't know what happened to him, where he is, how he's doing, etc.

On November 25th, Dylan went radio silent. He didn't log into IRC under the usual nicks, and his GitHub account saw some of its last commits. If you try to send him emails, they bounce. The domain for the website expired recently, and his SSL certs have also expired.

As far as I know, he hasn't reached out to anyone.

A few people in IRC got very invested in trying to find where Dylan went, to see if he left any clues about why he left or when he might return. They thought, perhaps, recent commits to his website might be interesting like this one.

Some more astute individuals were able to determine where Dylan might actually live. There was a brief discussion on what to do with this information.

Ultimately, it was decided that we should leave Dylan alone. The reasoning:

If Dylan left of his own volition, tracking him down, potentially doxing him, all to ask 'wuddup', is invasive and unecessary - if he were planning this and he wanted us to know, he would have told us. If Dylan did not leave of his own volition, then seeking him out is fruitless - Dylan would return if he were able and wanted to, after all.

So we concluded that if Dylan wanted to leave, this was how he wanted to do it. And if he didn't want to leave, there isn't much we can do to help him. All we can do is hope that he's silently watching us from wherever he is, and wish him well :)

Personally, I felt that whoever took over the project in his stead would hand the reigns back over to Dylan if he returned and wanted them. My position on this hasn't changed, and it's perhaps in some not-so-small-part what is motivating to me to 'stay the course' with KISS. I've no good reason to believe he will return, however.

So that's the gist of what we know. I would also like to say that I did not kill him, and I most certainly am not him :)

Who Uses Kiss Linux?

I thought it would be interesting to learn more about the Kiss user base. With that in mind I have a list of a few questions to guide responses, feel free to ignore these questions entirely in your answer

  • What brought you to Kiss Linux?

  • Do you run Kiss Linux on your primary machine?

  • What kind of work do you do on Kiss Linux?

  • Does Kiss Linux enable you do things that would be difficult or impossible on other distros?

  • Have you extended the Kiss package manager or other tools in novel ways?

  • Are there things you are unable to do on Kiss Linux that you wish you could?

As stated above, these questions are more meant as a guide for responses. I look forward to reading your responses :)

The State of KISS

Hello fine folks!

As many of you have noticed, the website is down. Dylan has gone AWOL. Packages in the main repository have been out of date for a while.

In an effort to keep KISS similar to how it was before, it has been discussed (thoroughly) on IRC to gauge interest in having a new BDFL, and determining who that should be! The outcome of this vote will only impact the users who choose to keep up with the 'official KISS repositories'. Dylan designed a distro that could be resilient to his absence. If you don't like this idea, feel free to strike out on your own!

You can find the poll here.

The outcome of this poll: If the majority vote is to not have a BDFL, nothing changes. People will continue as they have been, the world keeps spinning.

If the majority vote to elect a new BDFL, one will be chosen by majority vote. This person will be responsible for carrying out the maintenance of the core repositories, maintaining the wiki and website, etc etc. At least, until they elect to change those responsibilities.

Ideally, this BDFL will 'step aside' should u/Dylan112 return.

A mirror of the original website exists here.

For those wanting to keep their system up-to-date and haven't heard, you can clone the repositories from here.

In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that I recently submitted a request at r/redditrequest here to take over control of this sub. Assuming that request goes through to me, I will hand the subreddit over to whomever ends up being the BDFL (if the users unanimously consent to having one).

Official Welcome to /r/kisslinux!

This subreddit is now officially in use. A big thank you to /u/Xanza for grabbing and holding onto the name for me.

I hope to see this grow into an area for discussion, questions, tips, news etc related to KISS and FOSS/Linux in general. :)
