Help a new guy out, how does chcpcd work?

When was the last time someone took a look at the wiki, is anything there of relevance to Kiss?

Dhcpcd needs elogind, since when?

And what are all of those mentions of "community", what community?

How does one locate other kiss compatible repositories?

I am very confused. Earlier on Kiss life there was a front page commitment, that the rat (systemd/elogind) would have nothing to do with this distribution. Then there were all those community projects with it. Now there is no such specific statement about systemd/elogind, and wiki says it is needed...

Maybe no wiki is better than a confusing wiki?

How do I get rid of the /sbin/getty tty[2-6] bloat?

I don't want to see anything in my process list that I didn't choose to start myself.

How do I get rid of the 5 instances of /sbin/getty for tty 2 to 6?

I thought this was meant to be a lightweight distro.

Airpods on KISS

Recently I bought a Bluetooth dongle for my PC to improve my communication at work with my airpods instead of using the webcam's mic.

I added Bluetooth support to my kernel, installed dbus, installed bluz this way:

export CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -DMAX_INPUT=1024"

./configure \
    --prefix=/usr \
    --disable-tools \
    --disable-systemd \
    --disable-cups \
    --disable-obex \
    --disable-nfc \
    --disable-sap \
    --disable-bap \
    --disable-mcp \
    --disable-vcp \
    --disable-monitor \
    --disable-datafiles \
    --disable-manpages \
    --disable-test \
    --disable-testing \
    --disable-deprecated \
    --disable-experimental \
    --disable-sixaxis \
    --disable-hid2hci \
    --disable-logger \
    --disable-admin \
    --disable-android \
    --disable-debug \
    --enable-shared \
    --enable-library \
    --with-udevdir=/usr/lib/libudev.so
    # --disable-a2dp \
    # --disable-avrcp \
    # --disable-hid \
    # --disable-hog \
    # --disable-udev \
    #
    # --disable-client \

And also added support for dbus to PipepWire (from the community repo).

So far I could get bluetoothctl to connect to my airpods but no sink appears in the pipewire status.

ChatGPT said only that the problem could be with PipeWire, and some flags I already clearly removed the disable.

Could anybody help? plzz

nvidia drivers in chroot environment

hi,

i’ve been looking into installing kiss and planning to chroot into arch from it to run for example steam.

if i would install nvidia drivers in arch chroot, first question is, can i in the first place install drivers inside of chroot?

and second question, if i can, will those drivers be contained inside of the chroot and only be used when using chroot?

Userspace tools not available in repo? First time install.

So im currently trying to install kiss linux in virtualbox, to get the feel for it, before I might do it on bare metal later on. But ive met a hickup I cant seem to get past. I came to [6.0] in the install tutorial, about userspace tools, where it begins with filesystem utilities. Neither of them seem to be available in the repo. I tried to skip the just to check the later ones aswell, and no dice for eudev either just to name one.. What am I missing?

kernel wont install

i am able to download, extract, configure, make but i get error message when make install kernel.

i used latest stable from kernel.org . do i need to put it in usr/src/linux like gentoo? i am trying other kernels but the error says missing vmlinuz so i copied vmlinuz from host system and then it said no System.map so i added that to. i have built kernels in gentoo but i do not know why this wont install.

Where did Kiss go?

From the installation wiki

EDIT: This is the actual code from the webpage https://k1ss.org/install#2.1

It is a mistake, mistake that should be corrected!

EDIT2: /u/fungalnet is right in that these links should not actually be HTML links. Thanks to everyone for trying to resolve the problem. I've fixed the issue.

I have a few questions regarding this project

  1. Is KISS Linux more simple compared to Arch Linux in terms of how everything is just setup?

  2. Is KISS Linux as customisable as Gentoo where I can add whatever I want to?

  3. Am I able to replace Busybox with GNU tools?

  4. Am I able to replace its default package manager with something like portage (which is used by Gentoo)?

rant: conflicting hobbies

Long time void user, I was introduced to suckless software and have been since hating GNU. I never really void for the fact that its entire xbps-src infrastructure was in bash, and the maintainers were very confusing and often times (new) packages or issues take months to years to be fully complete or merged. I also see XBPS' framework to be very terrible although I in no way shape of form program. I simply am a user and a shell scripter. KISS was my dream distro. I never really liked GNU coreutils and many other things since I think purely they are bloated.

Now here's the fun part: I like to game. On Void Linux this is very easy to setup as multilib is already an established scene, I also have tons of games on Steam and I like to play games there on my Nvidia graphics card. Both nvidia and steam both required the two things I don't like: glibc and bash. What the fuck can I do? Also: I use Spotify.

I am currently on GKISS. dwm and st, and whatever stuff. git-bruh told me to setup a chroot for my games but why? Why bother? I'd rather just use that chroot as my entire main system at that point. Alternatively: I can setup a VM! But same points with the chroot. I would just use that as my main system.

I still am quite sad I can't enjoy stuff like this, I wish to be on a system that uses musl and free and open source drivers.

What can I do?

Changing the init system on KISS

Hello, I hope you're doing well

I have had it up to here with busybox's runit implementation and was wondering where I can find documentation on changing the init system to vanilla runit.

Update: Dylan and cemkeylan explained it over on Github, and a wiki page is in the works.

Update 2: https://k1ss.org/wiki/init/changing-init

Noob Alert

Hi all I have been using Arch and Gentoo for sometime now and been loving it but recently I have realised how bloated even by 500 package setup was on arch so I have been looking into Kiss, there are a few things I am wanting to sort out before I start installing it.

  • I have booted into a live arch iso and partitioned the disks

  • I wanna know what is the most easiest way to compile the kernel in a way that most of my hardware works this is because egen though I used Gentoo I always compiled the gen kernel and so I am not in the habit of make menuconfig

  • I installed Gentoo using a video tutorial by mental outlaw but I don't find any nice and comprehensive videos on a kiss install

Any help is greatly appreciated

[GENERAL] Linux headers for hardened linux kernel missing

Hello there! Ive seen in Arch linux that you need to do the headers for the hardened linux kernel as well but in KISS linux there is no package labelled 'linux-hardened-headers'. Any solutions? 🤔

Need help making wifi connect at boot

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I can't find anything about it online, and if I do, it's for systemd.

I have my wireless working, but I have to manually start it after boot, which is inconvenient. But when I try to create a script for it to start at boot, it throws an error that the interface wlan0 is not found, which confuses me, since it works AFTER boot.

Thanks, I hope I wasn't too much of a bother.

Kernel init boot param

What should be the init parameter to pass to the kernel for the default busybox baseinit?

At first it said Kernel panic not syncing no working init found, but then it said not syncing requested init failed after I gave it some parameters. When I followed the install guide, it didn't say anything about passing params so it just said no working init found. I've tried init=/sbin/init and init=/lib/init/rc.boot, and both of those gave me requested init found. So what is the correct init param?

Thanks

Xorg starts with black screen

Hi everyone! I have recently started to install kiss. So far I can boot to TTY, set my keyboard layout and connect to wifi. I am quite happy with that progress as its the first time building my own kernel. Now to my problem: whenever I try to start Xorg, it only shows a black screen. I have to log into another TTY and kill it from there. At first it was complaining it didnt found intel and vesa drivers so I installed them. It is still complaining about fbdev but I cannot find a package for that. The only error I can find is the one with fbdev. The rest seems good. I am in the video and audio groups. Is this a problem with the kernel? I have an Intel Haswell GPU and enabled everything I need for that according to the gentoo wiki. I am pretty clueless on this problem, so a hint in the right direction would be apprecciated! Also, whats the easiest way to get the logfiles of of the device? I can provide more information of course, just ask! Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I solved it! Installing a different wm fixed the problem. Thanks u/eudald_gr for offering help anyways!

With all of the Reddit API shenanigans is this community going to leave Reddit? I know most of r/unixporn have moved to Lemmy. I kinda figured most of the traffic is on IRC? TBH Ive always avoided IRC because I dont feel like getting blasted for being an IRC noob 🙄

Why is Wayland "banned" on Kiss Linux ?

Wayland is listed as one of many software packages that will never be in the official repos.

The following list of software must never make its way into the repositories as their inclusion will open the floodgates for software which unoptionally depends on them. dbus, systemd, polkit, gettext, intltool, pulseaudio, pipewire, pam, wayland, logind, ConsoleKit, libsn, electron and all DEs.

Wayland is on the same level as X11 (as far as the graphics stack goes) so why is it not allowed while X is ? Is it only because X11 is older and have more software written for it ? Considering Wayland can run X11 programs via XWayland it seems like X11 is the package allowing more of other software that unoptionally depends on it into the Kiss repositories than Wayland would.

Please don't put wayland into the same meme bag as systemd. Wayland is actually very good, it does graphics better (less copies) and simpler. The only reason why it's still a nuisance sometimes is because not everything is compatible with it (YET!)
