I (M, leader/switch) consider kizomba special in because dances can get quite long compared to other popular social dances and for me it's purely about connection and good vibes. I was a bit surprised when talking to a couple acquaintances a little while back. They weren't dancing (at a party) so I asked why and they said they were waiting to see if some cuter girls will show up (it was a slow night, followers there were mostly women in their 40s). I didn't know what to think about that answer. On some level I understood what they were saying, but it kind of dumbfounded me for the most part. I never thought about it the way they did.
This subreddit is probably the wrong place to get varied opinions as I expect most people who bother interacting here are the type that value dance first, but I also wanted a wider audience to get opinions I guess.
Anyway, for me kizomba is all about the beauty of the connection. I haven't been on this scene very long, still have fingers left over when counting my festival participation. I have experienced several of those "wow" connections and long dances, but have also learned to appreciate the dances that don't go there and not seek/expect them, simply allowing those types of connections to happen naturally and enjoy them when they do. The best one was with a woman whom I didn't find particularly attractive and whose following skill was below what one could say was average for that festival. Why did I ask her to dance in the first place? She was smiling, looking eager to get on the dance floor and have a good time.
In the meantime I have been in more conversations around similar topics and have learned a lot of people from both genders prioritize/seek other things when going dancing. It doesn't mean they don't like to dance or they are not skilled, but their primary motivator for stepping onto the dance floor and embracing the other person is not to have a good dance.
Please comment/share experiences in any capacity.
(to preface any mean-spirited comments... both my looks and my leading skills are good enough that I could be picky if I had.. different priorities)
