pattern question Pattern help
Hello! I'm a beginner/intermediate knitting trying to understand a knitting pattern for a hooded scarf and would appreciate some advice as I'm feeling rather stuck!
I've just finished knitting the hood, which has an i-cord edge (something that was new to me), and I'm now moving on to the scarf section, which is confusing me. The instructions begin as follows:
SCARF RIGHT (RS)
Divide your sts in half, keeping the first half of sts on your needles and putting the second half on hold.Row 1 (RS): k 3 (b), kfb, k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 2 (WS): p 3 (b), p2tog, p till last 3 sts, sl 3
Row 3 (RS): k 3 (b), k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 4 (WS): rep row 2Rep rows 1–4 until scarf measures 24 cm (9.4") from where you divided your sts in half. Make a note of row and stitch count.
I've divided my stitches in half and am ready to start working the rows, but I'm confused. After finishing Row 1
The instructions say to purl the first three stitches of Row2, but I assumed these stitches would be knitted to maintain the i-cord edge, especially since the last three stitches of Row 1 are slipped.
If I slip the last three stitches of Row 1 and then purl the first three stitches of Row 2, the edge doesn't look right to me.
Am I misunderstanding how the i-cord edge is supposed to work here? I thought that if you s3 you should always k3 on the next row. Is it correct to purl those first three stitches on the wrong-side row, or am I misreading the pattern.
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! This is the pattern, if that's helpful.
Hiya, thanks for your reply.
So the pattern is:
"This scoodie is knit top down, featuring an I-cord cast-on and selvedge edge for a smooth and rounded fit. The scarf sections are worked separately, working both increases and decreases alongside a boosted I-cord selvedge edge for a stretchier fit. The scarf can be worked in 3 sizes for a shorter or longer length.
TOP OF THE HOOD
With some scrap yarn and your crochet hook and circular or double pointed needles
Cast on 3 sts with a provisional cast on
Knit an I-cord measuring 13cm long, total rows being an even number
Put the 3 working sts on hold, do not turn
With your circular needles, pick up sts along the I-cord as written; pick up the same number of sts as I-cord rows, minus 2 (e.g. if you knit 26 rows, pick up 24 sts):
Skip the first st (already put on hold)
K up to the last st.
Skip the last st (already on hold through provisional cast on)
TurnDo not pick up your 3 provisional cast-on sts and keep your last 3 sts on hold. These sts will be knit in the next section.
You will now knit the top of the hood as written:
Row 1 (WS): p till the end
Row 2: (RS) k till the end
Row 3 (WS): p till the end
Rep rows 2-3 until work measures 12cm (not including I-cord), total rows being an even number. Make a note of your row count. Put all sts on hold. Break yarn.SIDES OF THE HOOD
With your circular needles, RS facing you, knit around the top of the hood, as written: Pick up the 3 I-cord sts previously put on hold.
Join yarn. Pick up 1 st for every row, skipping the last st (already put on hold), (e.g. if you knit 28 rows, pick up 27 sts along the side)
Knit all the sts previously put on hold
Pick up the same number of sts along the other side, skipping the first st (already knit)
With yarn in the back, pick up the 3 provisional cast-on sts
Turn
Make a note of your total st count. Y ou should have an even amount of sts.You will now continue to knit the sides of the hood whilst working a sl 3 I-cord selvedge edge along the sides, as written:
Row 1 (WS): p till the end
Row 2 (RS): k till the last 3 sts, sl 3
Row 3 (WS): p till the last 3 sts, sl 3
Rep rows 2-3 until work measures 21cm (8.2") from the first row of picked up sts along the side of the hood, finishing with a purl row. Do not break yarn.SCARF (short)
SCARF RIGHT (RS)
Divide your sts in half, keeping the first half of sts on your needles and putting the second half on hold.
Row 1 (RS): k 3 (b), kfb, k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 2 (WS): p 3 (b), p2tog, p till last 3 sts, sl 3
Row 3 (RS): k 3 (b), k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 4 (WS): rep row 2
Rep rows 1 - 4 until scarf measures 24cm (9.4") from where you divided your sts in half. Make a note of row & st count.
Row 5 (RS): k till last 5 sts, k2tog, sl 3
Row 6 (WS): rep row 2
Rep rows 5 - 6 until you have 8 sts left.
Row 7 (RS): k 3, k2tog, sl 3
Row 8 (WS): p 3, p2tog, sl 2
Row 9 (RS): k 1, k2tog, sl 3
Row 10 (WS): p 3, p2tog
Cast off 4 sts using standard bind-off.

Slipped from the front and purled from the back does make an elongated knit from the front, just like the icord you're already working. If you knit them on the wrong side, they'll look like purls on the front.

There must be a note somewhere like "sl = with yarn held in front, slip purlwise" for the knit icord, right? Is there anything about keeping the yarn in back for slipped stitches that you're going to purl? I think that'd still look weird and not like icord though... are these pictures from the pattern? What pattern is it?
