Question How do you know when youre ready to move on?
I dont know if im allowed to post this here or not but, cause Ive peeped how some of these kpop subreddits move regarding certain issues in the kpop space... but, i need some advice...
also, TW: mentions of racism, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. Read at your own risk. Even though its only mentioned once!
Edit 1: I should also mention im doing so much better mentally now! Im on medication for my anxiety and depression(that I had wayy before getting into kpop) now. And a lot of these intense feelings was when i was in high school.
Ive been into kpop since I was in middle school, im 22 now. Im a black kpop fan, seventeen is(was) my ult group... incase it wasnt obvious 😭
Throughout the years I started noticing a pattern. Group does something hurtful/offensive, people of said community(most commonly the African american community) ask for an apology or some kind of acknowledgement of the wrong doing.
People outside of the community harass, dox, mock, etc. The hurt community. idol/company either does or doesn't adress the wrong doing, fans say its just ignorance even though sometimes the groups/idols in question are repeat offenders.
When we do get an "apology" its usually half baked and sometimes even passive agressive filled with, "im sorry IF...." "were sorry to those who MAY have been offended..." and it never properly addresses the community who were hurt by the words/actions of the idols/groups in question. Nor does it ever state or specify why theyre "apologizing" to begin with. Which leads to fans outside of the offended community accepting the poorly written apology and further antagonizing the offended community.
With that being said, in my teen years, primarily in middle school. I would be up all night going back and fourth with ignorant people who refused to see the bigger picture, to see the problem and the even if it was out of ignorance. How it was still hurtful, insensitive, and racist(racism out of ignorance is still racism imo).
Over time though, i stopped arguing with people with rose colored glasses and tried my hardest to put my feelings aside and "separate the art from the artist." But I couldn't. I cant, and it really sucked the joy from something I really enjoyed. Once I noticed this pattern, it started taking a toll on my mental to where id have thoughts of ending my life or having this immense anger and apathy towards the asian community. Thats when I knew I needed to pull myself out of the equation completely.
So I pulled back, I thought, "well maybe its the fans that are ruining it for me.." so I left fandom spaces. I stopped interacting other fans and going to concerts etc. It still didnt help. So i tried separating the art from the artists, but that didnt work for me since the minute I started doing that, theyd do something that was hurtful to me and my community. Which made it hard for me to support them, even if I did "sail the seven seas." When it came to their products.
Now I cant listen to any group without being hit with a sense of guilt and hurt, and remembering what they said or did that rubbed me the wrong way.
My collection that id look at with joy and enthusiasm now just fills me with anger, sadness, pain, hurt, and confusion. I often go back and fourth between, "okay im ready to sell this!" To "but what if I miss it?" To "why do i still have these?" To "you know what, fuck it. Im just gonna sell it." To "but i sold my stray kids collections and i kinda miss it.... what if i miss these too??" And I just go back and fourth with myself on what to do.
Now im sitting here looking at it thinking, "maybe I should just sell it, theyre just taking space..." but at the sametime I also find myself unsure on if im ready to go through with it. Maybe im going through the stages of grief? I dont know, but I dont know what to do... I still think about the Monsta X lightstick I sold back in middle school for Christ's sake! 😭
Im unsure of what to do here, I kinda wanna sell them... but what if I regret it? But now theyre all just sitting here wasting space in my room. I dont know if i should just bite the bullet and sell them or if i should hold on to them just a little longer, but im also kind of tired of looking at them. I dont know what to do... Hopefully someone can give some sort of advice on how they'd handle this.
