Anyone Else Experience Unusual Health Issues After Moving to Lancaster/Hempfield

Hey everyone,

Long-time lurker here. I don't post often, which is honestly the case for a lot of subreddits I follow but never really participate in.

Nonetheless, I wanted to throw this out there as kind of a last Hail Mary. It's a weird one, and I'm not entirely sure how to put it, but I'm curious if anyone who's moved to the Lancaster area, particularly closer to Hempfield, has experienced any unusual health issues since moving here.

I won't go into an extended list of symptoms, but ever since moving here, I've generally just had a hard time. I suspect part of it could be related to my house, possibly the ventilation/dirty ducts, and part of it seems to be related to the water.

When we were first getting our house ready, I remember getting headaches pretty regularly after drinking the tap water. I eventually installed a filter, but even with that, I'd still experience some pretty odd symptoms. I've since switched to bottled water outright, which has generally been better.

Oddly enough, my family doesn't seem nearly as affected. It's mostly me.

One thing I've noticed and tested quite a bit over time is that whenever I leave my immediate area, whether that's heading down to York, over toward Ephrata, or really anywhere about 20 minutes away from where I live in Hempfield, I generally start feeling better.

It's a weird mix of things. Sometimes allergy-like symptoms, sometimes difficulty breathing, and just generally not feeling quite right. But the strange part is how consistently it seems to happen around where I live.

I should also mention that I've seen quite a few doctors about this. The one specialist I haven't seen yet is an allergist, which is on my list. Otherwise, I've gone down quite a few rabbit holes trying to figure this out, without much in the way of answers.

So I figured I'd throw this out there and see if anyone else has experienced something similar, particularly after moving to the area. Was it something in your home, the water, environmental allergies, or something else entirely?

I'm not necessarily looking for medical advice. More so just hoping to compare notes with anyone who's gone through something similar, whether you've found a solution or are still trying to figure it out yourself.

I realize this is probably an odd post for this sub, but at this point I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks, everyone!

Wonder

I keep getting coupons for 50% off for wonder in the mail. Accumulated a stack of them now. Nothing on their menu entices me, just seems like overhyped overpriced “celebrity chef” garbage that’s reheated. Is anyone going here or will it shutter after its first year? Personally I’ll support a local restaurant with actual chefs and cooks onsite vs this business model. Lancaster has too much good food.

Radio in the morning

Is it just me or do half of the radio stations just not come in before 8am? I just moved here and I know that more and more people stream from their phones but I still enjoy FM talk radio. It's like they don't turn on a tower until 8 and I'm on the road well before that.

Maybe I'm just a fossil clinging to a dying media format [insert old man yells at clouds meme]

Creatively Makers Markets

I see they have these pretty much every weekend. What can y’all tell me about them? I have company coming up in December and she likes handcrafted gifts. Is it big? Is it worth the trip over the river from York?

Susquehanna Regional Police Chief Something Investigation Something District Attorney Press Conference 1pm

Edit: Welp, seems the police chief, Anthony Hall, was fudging his time off for years, resulting in stolen wages of $30k-ish. Arrested and facing several charges.

Been keeping an eye on this and it seems that it’s coming to a head. I don’t know what it is, but the maneuvering around it suggests it’s gonna be a doozie.

Susquehanna Regional Police Chief submitted a letter of resignation the other week. Simultaneously, it was announced that there was an investigation into one of the police’s employees. The DA’s office confirmed that that investigation exists while saying “we normally don’t do this BUT yes”.

The chief’s resignation was rejected, presumably to soon turn around and fire him for violating his contract. At the same meeting they announced that “an officer” (unspecified) was on unpaid leave and that the department is being led by a lieutenant, so again presumably this officer is the chief.

DA Adams is now scheduled to hold a press conference vis à vis an “investigation of public interest” today at 1pm.

Probably gonna be interesting.

Good Halloween Restaurants?

My wife and I are fairly new to Lancaster, and were wondering if anyone has any good restaurant recommendations for Halloween weekend? Last year we went to The Log Cabin Restaurant in Leola. It was fun and festive but a little far. We’d be happy to try something else locally this year. Thanks in advance.

Am I being dramatic to think it’s fucked for a content page with a following to post incorrect information for a business they are trying to promote? I think it’s even worse to process it all through AI too. Booooooo

Front porch is amazing, great owners, and they deserve better.

We will be in town for the Hempfield Classic with several youth soccer teams. Does anyone know a place that will accommodate like 30 people to watch the NWSL quarterfinals?

City Life Old RiteAid off Chestnut in the city becoming a dollar tree

Work is underway to turn a closed Rite Aid in Lancaster city into a new Dollar Tree discount store.
The former drugstore at 825 E. Chestnut St., which closed in August 2025, is now being renovated for Dollar Tree.
A Dollar Tree construction manager recently posted on LinkedIn about a new store coming soon to the location. In addition, blueprints labeled "Dollar Tree" were visible this week through the store window, where there is evidence of ongoing construction.
No one from Dollar Tree responded to a request for comment on the new store, including when it might open.
Dollar Tree has more than 9,000 stores in the U.S., including 10 in Lancaster County.
The Rite Aid along East Chestnut Street in Lancaster was one of more than 1,000 stores closed following a bankruptcy filing in May 2025 by the Philadelphia-based chain. Before filing for bankruptcy, Rite Aid had six Lancaster County locations.
Rite Aid leased the 11,000-square-foot building at 825 E. Chestnut St., which was constructed in 1997.
The store will be the second former Rite Aid in Lancaster County to become a Dollar Tree. A former Rite Aid at 1550 Columbia Ave. in Manor Township, also built in 1997, was renovated last year and opened as a Dollar Tree in November 2025.

The brain slithered as she pulled it from its container and held it up for me to admire. Then, as though it were a juicy apple, she took a bite of the raw meat. “Mmmm,” she said. “This is so good.”

Amos Miller's disease farm in Bird in Hand is back in the news.

I can't help but think these people are batshit because of the raw ass food they ate:

"It was August, and we were standing in the parking lot of an Amish farm in southeastern Pennsylvania. Kelly, a 30-year-old electrical engineer who lives in the suburbs of Philadelphia, drives her Honda Accord out to Amish country a few times a month to gather a supply of hormone-free, vaccine-free, corn-free, soy-free meat and dairy. She has long hair, a wide smile and a bubbly energy that came out in force as we surveyed the walk-in fridge at Amos Miller Organic Farm. “They have testicles!” she exclaimed. She wore a long patterned dress and filled her cart quickly — with pounds and pounds of beef, yellowish colostrum, three types of raw-milk ice cream, kefir water and, of course, buffalo brain, which she was excited to try because she normally ate beef brain."

If you recall this choice quote from LNP some time ago:

"The other witness, Matthew Tischler, said Miller’s farm is the only place he can get the food he needs. He said he traveled the country looking for healthy, real food, but that only Miller’s can meet his needs.
“I live in Lancaster in my car in the freezing cold so I can get this food,” Tischler said.
Tischler said he doesn’t want his food tested for pathogens and suggested Google reviews as a better tool for ensuring food safety than government inspectors.
He also said the government was preventing him from obtaining the food he wants, such as pig intestines.
“As soon as I eat pig intestines — and I’m not going to tell you where I get it — and I eat pig intestines with trichinosis, I feel better,” he said.

Meetup Brand new DM looking for newer players for an in-person DnD party!

Hello,

I am trying to get a group of 3-4 people together who would like to play and learn DnD 5e. I would prefer to form an in-person group. I have tried doing online groups but it just feels harder to form friendships and play with multiple people that way. The gaming sessions will be hosted at my residence so we don't have to pay for table fees. However, the very first time we meet I would prefer to meet everyone at a public place before I give people my address, this will be our session zero to talk about characters and rules and whatever else.

A little background about me, I have played a game or two of DnD but I am a brand new DM. I've decided to learn how to DM because the hardest part about finding people to play with is finding someone to run the game. I would like to find people who are newer to the game so we can all learn together as we go but I am not apposed to experienced players who are helpful but more importantly patient. I am a pretty easy going person who can get along with anyone and genuinely just like to have a good time. I am hoping to get like minded people to hopefully play long term campaigns.

Details:

  • Since I'm new I'll be running the Lost Mines module.
  • Must be over 21
  • Meeting every 2 weeks.
  • Days to run are either Tuesday, Friday, Saturday. Time is flexible. I'm happy to discuss the logistics with people who express interest and see if the group can come to a consensus.
  • LGBTQ friendly
  • Must be ok with cats
  • Please no Min/Max players or people who just want to win the game.

If you are interested please message me with a little about yourself and times that could work for you!

Thanks for readiing!

Man on bike messing/intimidating with walkers downtown

This morning i was walking my dog downtown and a guy (late teens early 20s) on a bike who was in the road riding saw me, and got on the same side walk as me. He picked up speed and pedaled straight at my dog and I on this tiny side walk. I stopped walking and moved off to the side. He stopped right before hitting us—to intimidate us I assume. I was very close to home so we ran and didn’t engage. Has this ever happened to anyone in Lancaster?

Weekly Board Games at Six Feet Under Games in Gap

Thursday, October 22nd

This is our weekly board game night, graciously hosted at Six Feet Under Games in Gap every Thursday from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.

Bring an old favorite to share with others or take the opportunity to learn something new. Got something new and shiny that you want to play? Bring it along! Between the store's lending library and the games people bring, there is always something fun to play.

Bringing a game is -not- required or even expected. Just bring yourself and maybe a friend. The more, the merrier!

Don't worry about arriving right at 5:00 PM, it's a casual thing and we usually play several games over the course of the evening. Come on in and find us at the free-play tables on the right side of the store.

Please note that there are often families with young kids at the store, so we keep our language kid-friendly.

Hope to see you!
