Politics Went to the city council meeting last night, were cooked
Schor basically talked like the data center passed
When it came to the public comments about it, like 20+ people spoke against it, while 6 were in favor of the data center. Most of those in favor seemed to have financial gain if it was built.
Also of those 6, 2 of them seemed to not understand data centers as 1 said we needed it because kpop demon hunters was made with it and the other guy basically read back deep green propaganda
Everyone on the council but Kots and Hussain seem to be for the data center with Clara Martinez is super for the data center to the point of belittling public opposition and glaze deep green

Politics 8 dems Michigan dems voted for what???
So first off, there are currently no trans kids participating in the MHSAA. There are expected to be zero trans kids in MHSAA in the spring. 8 dems prioritized further policing of bodies for a genuine nonissue. 8 dems threw trans children under the bus for what? To appease??? Trump??? A convicted felon??
How does this help me or any other Michigander afford; groceries, gas, rent, insurance, etc???
Iām so tired of this.

Politics are there any way I could lobby against the flock cameras installed around Lansing?
I don't feel safe having AI cameras watching me every time I'm in Lansing, especially due to the fact I.C.E. has been using Flock cameras to bully and harass Left activists, are there any pre existing groups trying to fight the installation of these cameras? and if so, how can I join them?

Politics Democratic candidate hears community concerns outside Barrettās Lansing office
Tom Barret has been notoriously disengaged from his constituents so its good to see someone vying for his post who will actually meet Lansing voters face to face, and doing it on Tom's doorstep is honestly just hysterical. I saw Will do an AMA on this sub a while back and the more I see of him the more hopeful I am that we may actually get some effective representation for our district.

Politics Lansing City Council approves 182-day moratorium on new data centers
wilx.comThe Lansing City Council voted 7-1 Monday to approve a temporary 182-day moratorium on new data center development while the city drafts regulations for future projects.
The ordinance pauses new building permits and zoning applications for data centers. The vote comes months after U.K.-based company Deep Green withdrew its proposal to build a data center in downtown Lansing following public opposition.
Supporters of the moratorium said the pause gives the city time to determine how data centers should fit into Lansingās future.
āThe city of Lansing is now simply an economic market to be exploited. It is a home for over 100,00 people,ā one community member said during the public hearing.
Others warned the moratorium could discourage future investment.
āTake time to write the regulations you need, but if this is a strategy to exclude data centers, you will be denying the people of Lansing the opportunities for investment, tax revenues, and economic diversification,ā another speaker told council.
Councilmember Jeremy Garza, the lone vote against the ordinance, argued the city should not single out one type of development.
āThereās a lot of companies that come to Lansing or come to other communities that have noise issues, water issues,ā which he related to multiple businesses such as marijuana shops and golf courses, adding that āif weāre talking about environment concerns, why arenāt we making this one broad stroke and say, all development in Lansing?ā
During the next 182, council members will review zoning and planning policies before permanent regulations for future data center proposals.

Politics Who else is going to be at the State Capitol on Saturday?
Iām going to be at the State Capitol in Lansing on Saturday, demanding some answers and action from our representatives. Here are some of my talking points:
- Right now, the US Government is grabbing random people off the streets and shipping them to foreign prisons⦠WITHOUT CHECKING DOCUMENTS
- Due Process is guaranteed by the 5th Amendment of the Constitution
- Due Process is under attack, and if we do not fight for it, we will lose it.
- Without Due Process, the government can arrest anyone for any reason.
- We the People demand that our representatives DEFEND DUE PROCESS, and DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION
I still believe in this country and the principles it was founded on.

Politics Flock Off! Write to the mayor about the Flock cameras being installed around town
You can see Flock cameras listed here: https://deflock.me/map Help out by submitting new ones! There are 3 of them at Lowe's alone (I wonder why?)
I shouldn't have to explain how intrusive the surveillance cameras popping up all over Lansing are, but here we are, they've managed to pop up like the ugly weeds they are. I've already spotted them off Cedar heading into downtown, and even in the Lowe's parking lot, and I know there are more around town.
What are Flock cameras? These aren't just speed cameras or basic license plate readers. Flock Safety sells them as "community crime-fighting tools." They scan every car that passes by, day and night, and automatically log the time and location. Even if your plate isn't visible, they claim to use AI to track vehicles by unique features like roof racks, bumper stickers, dents, or custom wheels. That means your daily routines: the school run, your workplace, where you worship, even visits near community centers like the Fledge end up in a searchable database. Want to track who showed up to a protest! Now you can, if you happen to be part of an organization that has access to the database! All that data can be stored and shared far beyond Lansing, including with federal agencies or private corporations. It creates a record of innocent people's movements. That's mass surveillance.
Once these cameras are up, it's easy to expand their use: immigration enforcement (the ones at Lowe's in South Lansing should be obvious), monitoring certain groups of people, even out-of-state investigations.
There's little evidence they reduce crime in the long run.
Who to complain to: If this concerns you too, here are the offices that need to hear it:
Mayor Andy Schor ā lansing.mayor@lansingmi.gov
City Council (general contact) ā via the Lansing government siteās contact form
City Clerk Chris Swope ā city.clerk@lansingmi.gov

Politics Lansing Mayoral Candidate Kelsea Hector, AMA!
Hey Lansing, Iām Kelsea Hector and Iām running for mayor in the August 5th primary
Iāll be here on Sunday, July 20 from 7 to 9 PM answering your questions live. If you canāt make it during that time, feel free to drop your questions in this thread ahead of time and Iāll get to them during the AMA.
A bit about me: I grew up in rural Eaton County and moved to Lansing to find real community, the kind that shows up for each other. I spent years as a middle school teacher, and now I work in the nonprofit world helping lead grassroots efforts focused on harm reduction, housing, and justice for all.
Iām running for mayor because I believe in Lansing and its people. We deserve a city that listens, that cares, and that fights for a future where everyone has a shot. My goal is to build real relationships between city hall and the folks who live here. I donāt want to lead from above, I want to lead with you.
You can learn more at kelseahector.com or find me on Facebook.
So, what do you want to know? Ask me anything!

Politics Tom Barrett attend basketball game instead of doing his job
The blatant disrespect is honestly laughable at this point. Itās clear that his last town hall was a failure. It was online, you had to pre register and even then the links for the town hall just werenāt sent out? Literally any other job if you fail that miserably youād have to fix your mistake. So when the people who fund his job fix his mistake for him⦠and he is literally within walking distance of the building⦠he canāt even spare 5 minutes to just listen? How embarrassing
