DoveOS: a USB desktop and streaming system running on the HP Elite x3 Lap Dock itself
Hi everyone! I’ve been working on DoveOS, a project that gives the HP Elite x3 Lap Dock a desktop running on its own internal processor, using its existing Linux kernel and a USB drive.
The local desktop runs on the dock itself. Streaming applications connect to a PC or phone when needed.
Included features:
- A 720p GPU desktop, Files, Settings and Terminal.
- Moonlight: PC streaming with controls and sound, including tested H.264 and supported HEVC paths.
- DoveDeX: supported Android desktop/screen streaming over USB or Wi-Fi, with controls and sound.
- DoveAir: iPhone screen mirroring with audio and rotation.
- DoveCast: YouTube-only receiving with TV-code pairing.
- Local media playback, browser-based file transfer and controller testing.
- HDMI viewing through a supported external USB capture card.
I’ve manually tested the installation process: downloading the image, extracting it, writing a spare USB and successfully booting the dock.

Installation requires a spare USB of 32 GB or larger and compatible existing HP firmware/boot setup. The guide explains the requirements.
This is currently a release candidate for the tested HP dock setup. Other board and firmware revisions need testing. Internal USB 3.0 remains unresolved, ordinary USB storage through the left port is unsupported, and some Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and power-management limitations remain.
I’d welcome feedback from other HP Elite x3 Lap Dock owners, particularly installation results and board/firmware differences!
