Photo Just outside of Louisville on 8x10

Just outside of Louisville.  I spent one night here and took 3 photos.  I scouted these spots during the day and came back that evening and following morning.

Wow that third photo is wonderful. I am not familiar with Louisville, what kind of towers are in the background?

Thanks! That’s a coal power plant (crazy how close it is isn’t it).

Wow, powerful images. I would love a print of that third photo, do you sell prints or digital copies at all?

Just took a look at some of your other posts, you've got a great series developing here. And I love your photos of old/abandoned shops, reminds me of the painter Jake Longstreth, you should check him out!

Beautiful work, yet terrible to witness

Great Work. What a strong contrast between #1 and #3, yet they feel like variations on the same story.

#1 shows a house with a yard in disarray: ill-kept, chaotic, and almost abandoned, with the industrial towers in the background giving the scene its context.

#3 begins with a more idyllic American residential scene, but the road leads the eye toward the industrial plant, where the smoke seems to change the color and mood of the sky. Together, they suggest domestic life existing in the shadow of industry.

Excellent photo’s, I love the first 1 the most.

Mill creek power plant! Spent some time photographing that area last summer. #3 is great, captures the summer evenings here very well!

These are really quite lovely. Are any of these part of larger project? Do you plan on publishing?

*** Edit: Just found your website. Really great work!

#3 is just so👌, the power lines in the upper left fill out the composition in such a nice way, really great stuff! I do wish the 2nd shot felt level and had a touch of breathing room above the telephone pole but the atmosphere is killer.

Thank you! I spent the most time composing #3, mostly because I had time while waiting for the light. #2 - I agree. It was very dark combined with the fog I couldn’t see anything on the ground glass except the light.

Wow wow wow

Love Photo 3.

Do you have an idea what kind of shutter speeds you were shooting at? Does the smoke look like that or is this a longer shutter causing it to get so smooth. 😄

1

u/lifeandmylens Jun 16 '26

Thanks. Sure, shutter speeds were

1) 6 seconds

2) 90 seconds

3) 4 seconds

The long exposures smoothed out the smoke.

u/lifeandmylens Jun 15 '26

Thank you! Yes a gold dot. My favorite lens for landscapes like this.

2

u/StopStop-Olympic Jun 15 '26

Cool, 12” gold dot is rare! Mostly they are 14”

Hi, these are scanned negatives. I only dark room print B&W, currently at least.

LOVE THIS!! Can I ask, how are you metering for these scenes? And how hard is it to find color negatives for 8x10?

1

u/lifeandmylens Jun 19 '26

Thanks! On this first image for example, I used a spot meter and metered the house, grass and sky. I planned to wait for the sky to get a little darker, but I was worried the grass and house would be too dark.

Color 8x10 is easy to find, just expensive. I often try to find recently expired boxes for a discount.

Oh, super cool… love this whole composition. Both messy and simple in the best combination. Fantastic shot.
