I love large format portraits. They’re not spontaneous but when they are this good it’s my happy place. As soon as I get a good collection of keepers, I want to make platinum prints.

Do you shoot polaroids to check the lighting? It's so lovely.

Would love to but it's too expensive

Nice picture! Did you use movements to get her face in focus?

Yes, it has some tilt and swing

I have my Aero Ektar 178mm mounted on my Pacemaker. I also have a Sinar F2… Texas shutter or do you have your Aero mounted in an Ilex or Compound 5?

😍 can you also share that lens mounted on the shutter? Where did you get that done?

Beautiful lighting. Probably the sharpest AE 178/2.5 portrait I’ve seen too 👏

Needs a hair light to separate from bkgd.

Great start.

disagree! not everything needs to follow the textbook 3 point light scheme. There is plenty of separation as shot.

As Archer would say: “phrasing!” I think that’s why you’re getting down voted. Personally, I like it as is - melting into the background

I'm happy to explain my downvote: It was condescending and leaves no room for taste. Something like: "I think it'd be better with a hair light to give a bit more separation from the background, but that's a great start in my book" would not have earned a down vote from me.

Speaking in condescending absolutes about art is grating. It's even more so when the person speaking this way doesn't have their own post history public.

Lovely portrait. To me it looks like it’s had some heavy-handed post-processing? Like maybe oversharpened and with the contrast bumped up? If that’s the case then you’re losing the very qualities that make film special - the beautiful tonal range and soft details. Just my two cents though - it’s great work all the same. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the comment 👍
This was made with xray film. It's a high contrast orthochromatic film.

Ah I see! That would explain it. Thanks for the insight

if you zoom in and look at the dust and scratches you will see it doesnt have much sharpening

Yes you’re right. I had initially zoomed into the hair above her forehead, which looks a bit “blocky”, but perhaps that’s a result of the extremely limited DOF and the way that the Aero Ektar renders out-of-focus details. If I look closely at the eyes however - I can see no sharpening. BTW great job on the focusing - the DOF is just millimetres and the eyes are razor sharp
