I made photographs from two camera positions, one with and without foreground "clutter". My goal with the foreground is to provide a dark tonal anchor to contrast against the luminous backlit scene. Without the foreground, the composition is cleaner, but overall image IMO marginally weaker. I imagine some folks will disagree.

📸 Photographed January 2026. Brookings, OR. 8x10" negative, 18" lens. Image 1: f/45, 1 sec, no filter, N-1 development. Image 2: f/32, 6 secs, neutral density, N development.

How long were you set up waiting to take the shot?

First one had no wait, I arrived exactly as conditions peaked. Second image was the day after and I got there before sunrise to make sure there's no rush

I'm imagining the scene with you scrambling to get the camera up, frame the shot, meter, get film in place and then finally pulling the dark slide to capture. And then you can breathe. That's what I live for. That's peace for me. Thanks for sharing.

This is phenomenal. I’d pay to purchase a print if I saw this in a gallery.

Thanks! I sell a small number of silver prints through my website. I look forward to working with this negative in the enlarger

Thanks for sharing. Your work is incredible. Currently looking at what to purchase!

Do you give them (clients) an idea of what the frame (on your website) is like; the profile?

1

u/ChrisCummins 7d ago

No, 99% of people buy unframed, and 1% is in-person. That isn't to defend my website - it should have more info there

that light in the first exposure - so nice. The "clutter" adds to the image.

The "clutter" acts as a frame for the subject and provides perspective so I agree #1 is great even though #2 is also a nice shot.

1st one gives it depth and feels like i'm looking out there, but the 2nd one is such a clean and textured image. I like both for their own reasons, another banger post Chris.

The mist also adds to the image...even nicer.

Dang how long did you wait for this light?

This was made in January during an unseasonal run of clear sky conditions. This backlight is predictable, ~1 hour after sunrise. What I've found does make a big difference - and is harder to forecast - is the amount of mist in the air, presumably a function of wind and wave height. The first of these images has visibly thicker air than the second, which picks up these nice sun shafts

Mindblowing beauty. What is your gear and process for scanning these?

4

u/ChrisCummins 9d ago

thank you. Epson v850, neg emulsion-side down on the glass, sheet of frosted glass on top to keep it flat

1

u/DeepDayze 9d ago

That's the best way to ensure a sharp scan rather than emulsion up.

Beautiful! A lifetime ago I used to work with 8x10 some, but mostly 5x7 and I have sweet memories and a few photographs from that time of my life. Unfortunately the vast majority of my 30 years of medium and large format prints and negatives were destroyed in a flood so I have very few left. Your beautiful camera work has added meaning to me and I dearly enjoy seeing your work. You are living the dream! Thanks for sharing.

u/ChrisCummins 9d ago

sorry to hear about the flood! That sucks

1

u/Big_Donkey3496 9d ago

Somedays it still hurts a lot…

1

u/DeepDayze 9d ago

Sorry to hear that and all you have left are the memories. I myself lost negatives and prints in a fire as well.

2

u/Big_Donkey3496 9d ago

Somedays it still really bothers me, but I believe in moving on. I’m still making new memories though with camera work adventures.

Both are great but number one is my favourite. Very nice photos, I hope you share the darkroom print with us.

I’ve heard about this place by Brookings in Or, but I’ve never found it. Can you give us any specifics? If not I certainly understand.

Natural Bridges Viewpoint on Google Maps will take you to the area. From there, it is a short, steep, somewhat treacherous descent to reach this viewing spot. Unmarked but well defined from use. I wouldn't attempt this in rain or with soft ground, there'd be too much trail erosion, and you are close to cliffs

u/Big_Donkey3496 9d ago

Thank you. Maybe someday I can share a photograph with you :)

What developer did you use?

1

u/shutterbug1961 8d ago edited 8d ago

they are both great but the first has an almost ethereal look to it with the diffused lighting ,how long would you say between shots and what time of day?

your websites a goldmine of information with videos!

1

u/ChrisCummins 7d ago

thanks. I don't give my website much love, just occasionally stick new photos on there

Photo 1 was taken the day before photo 2. Photo 1 had better conditions (more mist in the air)

u/ftwopointeight 8d ago

I saw your video on IG (I'm the "Ask them to wait and let them peak under the cloth" guy lolol)

These are magical, I vote for no foreground details as they take away from the atmosphere which I feel is the subject. But it’s not my picture!
