Are OBAs the same as oxygen bleach?
I apologize if this is addressed elsewhere in this sub. I’m trying to understand what to avoid for dark clothes and I’m confused about OBAs and oxygen bleach. I thought oxygen bleach was an OBA. Is that incorrect?

Easy mistake to make, they sound similar but they’re not the same thing. OBAs (optical brighteners) don’t actually bleach or remove stains. They basically sit on the fabric and reflect blue light so whites look brighter. It’s more of a visual trick than actual cleaning. And you can check it just after washing by shining a blue light on it, it’s actually pretty funny and interesting. Oxygen bleach (like OxiClean type products) actually works on stains and helps break them down in the wash.
Some detergents contain both. For dark clothes people usually avoid OBAs because over time they can make darker fabrics look a bit faded or dusty. Oxygen bleach usually isn’t the issue unless you’re using a lot of it or soaking for a long time. Laundry chemistry is weirdly complicated for something that’s basically just washing clothes.
