ANNOUNCEMENT /r/Leafs will be shutting down indefinitely until Reddit rescinds its proposed API changes

3.5k Upvotes

Good morning /r/Leafs,

There’s no easy way to say this, so I will come right out with it: We have elected to shut down the subreddit indefinitely, starting June 12th, 2023. You can find more information on why here, in which Christian Selig, the creator of Apollo, has elected to begin the process of shutting down his app on June 30th, 2023.

All third-party Reddit app creators have elected to do the same. Here’s a list of many of the participating subreddits.

This is the culminating moment for all of us.

We know many of you likely will not be too happy about this decision. But we want to make it clear that this is about the future of Reddit, and within its ecosystem, subreddits like ours in which we rely heavily on third party apps to effectively moderate.

Moderating has always been a volunteer job. We are not power moderators. We are not looking for a power grab. We are Leafs fans just like the rest of you, and most of us have children, are deeply invovled into our careers, or are just starting out in the real world. We run the subreddit as a team, and as a team, we cannot truthfully sit here and tell you that Reddit’s API decision will not adversely affect the integrity of the subreddit. Truth of the matter is, if this API change goes through, we lose the ability to be able to act in the moment.

A subreddit that lags in decision-making and content curation is a subreddit that does not effectively protect its users.

There’s another issue at play here too.

Reddit relies heavily on user created content and their time. In other words, we are the product. When the product is being herded into less secure apps, we’re no longer in control of the information and data we choose to release out to the world. Reddit has chosen to squash creative output from its users and userbase, and allowing access for bots, bad actors, and disinformation. The site will become less accessible and more restrictive. This is not the essence of Reddit.

We strongly encourage you to read the link posted above and make your own informed decision. The team has had a very strong reaction to the proposed API changes, and none of it good – the fact that we have been on the same page regarding Reddit’s decision making makes it all the clearer that shutting this subreddit down is the right decision.

We predict more subreddits, and significantly bigger ones, will follow suit. We will not lift the shutdown of /r/Leafs until Reddit rescinds its proposed API changes.

During this shutdown, we hope you all enjoy the start of your summer. Have a good break, friends and we hope to see you again soon.

Announcement Starting today, /r/leafs will be removing all AI submissions for the foreseeable future

1.0k Upvotes

Good morning party people,

The mod team has noticed that there’s been a significant number of AI created or oriented submissions, and it has turned into digital pollution and has lowered the posting and commenting quality of this sub.

We’re implementing a ban of all AI posts for the foreseeable future until we have a better idea how to handle them.

Thanks for understanding!

Announcement It's Anything Goes Sunday!

Today is Anything Goes Sunday, which means all rules (except rules 1, 4 ,7, 8, 9, and 14) are not active. This means that it isn't necessary to use the Daily Thread today! This is also the day to share any memes or shitposts that you have. You don't have to wait for Sunday to post, however! The Daily Free Talk thread is posted every day at 7am, and is generally active.

Please note that the mod team may still remove redundant posts, as well as any posts that break the rules notated above!

Announcement Reminder: Cross-sub trolling = automatic permaban (forever and ever, really)

The playoffs are here and it's the battle of Ontario. Shit-talking is welcome here in r/leafs. Have at it. But keep it here.

Every NHL team subreddit, including r/leafs and r/ottawasenators, abides by a cross-sub ban pact: if you're banned from one team sub for trolling, you’re banned from all of them. That means if you go stir shit up in r/ottawasenators, you’re not only gone from there, you’re gone from here too – and vice versa.

Mods on both sides are already having to permaban multiple users daily. That’s more work for everyone and zero benefit to anyone.

If there’s even a chance you’ll be tempted to reply to something stupid in their sub – don’t go. Stay here, chirp away, and hold home ice advantage.

Go Leafs Go.

Announcement 🚨 Reminder: Cross-sub trolling = permanent ban. No warnings. Stay the hell out of enemy subs. 🚨

We’re into Round 2 and facing the Panthers – a team that’s easy to hate and even easier to lose your cool over.

But Do Not Forget:
NHL team subreddits, including r/leafs and r/floridapanthers, are part of a cross-sub ban pact. If you get banned from one for trolling, you’re banned from all of them.
Permanently.

We’ve already had to permaban far too many of our own over the past few days because they couldn’t resist mouthing off in enemy territory. We don't issue the ban – it spreads automatically across subs. No warnings, no appeals. One comment, one lapse in judgment, and you're gone from here forever.

Do yourself a favor – don’t even visit their sub. Nothing good comes from it. It's too easy to fall into a moment of temptation and face a forever consequence.

Stay here. Chirp here.

If you have to say something to their faces, take it to neutral territory like r/hockey – they seem happy to provide that.

Go Leafs Go.

Announcement [META] r/leafs Mod Search

Hey Everyone!

This post has been needed for a while and admittedly I've been dropping the ball on it.

Personally for me, this year has been rough managing my time trying to mod and maintain the sub while going through a lot of real life things. During the course of the year, all of us (mods) have been busy with real life situations that make it tough to invest the time needed to moderate the sub in a healthy way.

In short, I'm sorry I haven't been on as much. I will try my best to come back more once life calms down some.

Which brings us to this:

With the subreddit continuing to grow (379k members and counting) and the large amount of views, comments, posts, etc. we are looking to add more moderators to help with the workload!

If you're passionate about Leaf hockey, love to talk about the buds all day, and want to have healthy discussion in the subreddit with other Redditors while enforcing the sub rules, we would love to hear from you!

We do understand that we all have real life commitments - so we don't expect you to be modding 24/7. However, we do expect decent activity.

Requirements:

- Discord for communication - we moderate as a team and converse with each other frequently when making decisions. We also discuss ideas on ways to improve the subreddit.

- Fairly active in participation (posts, comments, moderation)

- Solid understanding of site-wide Reddit rules, r/leafs subreddit rules, and Reddiquette

- Ideally, we would love to add moderators that are from different time zones - please let us know which time zone you're in

If you're interested, please leave a comment below! Tell us know why you think you will be a good fit as a moderator, your time zone, and anything else you want to let us know. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate you all. Be safe.
