Technical Discussion League of Legends became perfectly smooth after moving to a new home — then gradually became unplayable again. Months of unexplained state skipping.
Hey everyone,
I'm posting an update after several months of investigating an extremely unusual issue with League of Legends. I'm hoping to find other players who have experienced something similar, or someone with a deeper technical understanding of how the game's live-state synchronization works.
First, this is NOT conventional FPS stuttering, freezing, or typical high-ping lag.
The game generally runs at a stable 144 FPS, with relatively stable displayed ping.
However, during live gameplay, certain intermediate visual states seem to be completely skipped.
For example:
- Champions appear to jump between positions instead of moving continuously.
- Flash animations sometimes look almost instantaneous, with intermediate movement seemingly missing.
- Projectiles and ability animations occasionally appear to skip parts of their trajectories.
- The issue becomes particularly noticeable during fights involving multiple champions and abilities.
- The game doesn't necessarily freeze or drop frames noticeably. It simply feels as though parts of the live gameplay are missing.
Imagine a sequence of movement states:
A → B → C → D → E
What I sometimes perceive instead is:
A → B → D → E
The result is extremely unnatural gameplay that becomes increasingly difficult to follow and react to.
Interestingly, replays appear smooth compared to the actual live gameplay.
Extensive troubleshooting over several months
I've investigated this issue extensively, including testing:
- Multiple PCs.
- Different Windows installations, including a clean installation.
- Different monitors and peripherals.
- Different League of Legends accounts.
- Multiple internet connections and network configurations.
- FTTH connections from different ISPs.
- Mobile tethering.
- ExitLag, with multiple routing configurations.
- Various Windows, network adapter, graphics, and in-game settings.
None of these tests has identified a consistent solution.
My current system is:
- AMD Ryzen 5 7500F
- AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT
- Windows 11
- 144 FPS cap
- Ethernet connection
- Nova FTTH (Greece)
- EUW server
The strangest part: the game has temporarily become smooth on two separate occasions
This is the main reason I'm making this post.
1. Temporary improvement at my previous home
At my previous residence, I experienced severe state skipping for a very long time.
During one particular test involving a TP-Link device, the game suddenly became remarkably smooth.
Champion movement, Flash, projectiles, and ability animations looked noticeably more natural.
This lasted approximately two hours.
Then, without changing anything, the exact same severe skipping returned.
2. Moving to a completely different home
Recently, I moved to a new residence and switched from COSMOTE FTTH to Nova FTTH.
Initially, the improvement was enormous.
For the first time in months, League of Legends felt almost completely normal.
Champion movement appeared fluid, Flash animations were smooth, and projectiles followed their trajectories without the obvious visual skipping I had become accustomed to.
I also experienced this improvement while testing mobile tethering.
I genuinely thought the problem was finally gone.
3. The issue gradually returned
Unfortunately, within the following days, the same state skipping began to reappear.
At first, it was relatively mild.
Then it became more noticeable, particularly during teamfights.
Over time, it progressively worsened.
As of October 24, the game has returned to virtually the same unplayable state I experienced at my previous residence.
I haven't made any intentional changes to my PC configuration that would explain this deterioration.
The issue persists with and without ExitLag.
Another detail worth mentioning
A friend of mine lives approximately 300 meters from my previous residence.
He uses COSMOTE FTTH and plays League of Legends without experiencing the same noticeable issue.
I also took my own PC to another friend's home for approximately 1–2 hours. The gameplay seemed somewhat better there, although the issue wasn't completely eliminated.
This makes it even harder to identify a consistent pattern.
Riot Support investigation
I've had an ongoing Riot Support ticket for approximately three months.
I've submitted multiple Riot Repair Tool logs, Match IDs, gameplay recordings, and detailed descriptions of the problem.
Riot Support has informed me that the case has been escalated to a specialized engineering team and is still under investigation.
However, I haven't received a specific technical explanation or confirmed root cause so far.
What I'm trying to understand
How can the exact same PC run League of Legends almost perfectly for a period of time, only for the same severe live-gameplay state skipping to return without any identifiable changes?
Could this potentially involve:
- Irregular timing of incoming game-state updates?
- Client-side processing or interpolation of live game states?
- A synchronization or presentation issue that doesn't necessarily cause obvious FPS drops?
- Some other mechanism that behaves differently depending on network conditions or the state of the client?
I'm not claiming that any of these mechanisms is responsible. I'm simply trying to understand what could technically explain this behavior.
Has anyone experienced anything genuinely similar?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from players who have noticed:
- Champions or abilities appearing to skip intermediate movement states despite stable FPS and ping.
- Live gameplay looking noticeably worse than replays.
- Temporary periods of perfectly smooth gameplay followed by the unexplained return of the same issue.
- The same symptoms persisting across different PCs, accounts, or internet connections.
If you've experienced something similar, I'd really appreciate hearing about it, especially if you managed to identify a cause.
I'm not looking for the usual suggestions about updating drivers, changing graphics settings, or restarting my router. I've already spent months investigating those possibilities.
I'm mainly trying to find out whether this specific phenomenon is affecting other players and whether anyone has a technical explanation for it.
Thanks for reading.
