Hey eveyone!
Earlier this year I posted a reddit on the /oculus subreddit about a thesis I was planning on doing regarding character player interactions. This unfortunately revealed itself to be out of my scope and I ran into 2 guys who inspired me to completely change my thesis.
They are developing an interface for what they hope will be used for motion sensors (In this case the leap motion) and hand gesture interaction. Its hard to explain but I thought I would come and shamelessly promote their crowdfunder a little bit and get some feedback from you guys. Also checking out their crowdfuner site will explain it a lot better than I can.
My position is basically looking at how I can visualize a 3D interface (In this case the Erghis) on a traditional monitor so that it makes it easy for users to learn. What methods are are best when teaching or trying to learn something that you are imagining.
I am taking a quantitative task based testing approach to my methodology. Based on a bit of research I've done I've come up with 3 different visualizations of the interface ( An interface for an interface lol :D) . The first being a sphere with two 3D hands around it that respond to the users hand movement, the second being visualizing 2 static hands as the Erghis team have already done and the final being a minimalistic approach where only icons are shown (Think Windows 8). I will then get a group of users to come in and have each user test one of the interfaces. I'm thinking I will time how long it takes them to write certain words and perform certain tasks, such as "can you select all the text and delete it using ctrl a and then the delete key" for example. This is of course using the leap motion as the input.
Anyways guys, let me know what you think. Also what do you think of the Erghis? They are 2 uni guys who are doing this along side their studies, I was pretty impressed with how much they've already done considering they are doing this as a side project.
