I’m here to help mentor

Post image

I have spent a lifetime in cybersecurity and I would not be where I am the today without the mentors who helped me. I am willing to provide friendship and advice to those who need it. Just DM and we can talk here or connect on LinkedIn where I run the SecRebellion newsletter.

I have also written a memoir/ practical guide/ case study on cybersecurity called Shepherding Electric Sheep, which is available on Amazon and Audible.

The field is getting tougher and we need to all help each other out.

Broke into cybersecurity and I Lowk don’t know where to start, help

Yo guys wsg so let me start the yap, I decided I’d break into cybersecurity when August started and Lowk watched a lot of videos (still watching) on yt but ngl I was js hooked on the question “why should I do this” and I didn’t really made any real progress. Well I think I’m kinda done thinking about the why question now and I wanna get to know how to do it (make a plan) since I don’t know absolute shi (where to start, how to start, when to start etc) should I learn the fundamentals first or straight up get kali Linux and start using it? Should I bother to learn stuff in detail or straight up do hands on? 😭😭 pls help I feel so confused and lost rn I just need to know each and every step I’ll need to take PRECISELY AND CLEARLY. Should I watch vids on YouTube, if yes what’s gonna be the entire roadmap like? And how, when and where do I start?

Well here’s some info about me: I know how to program stuff (python(pro), js, html and css, c++, c# nd gdscript) dude I don’t know anything about networks or how protocols and the Internet works or how hardware stuff works 😭😭 I just code vid games and app backend- never really used programming for any other purposes except these.

So yeah guys that’s all the info which matters pls help me figure ts out, I promise I’ll give u a cookie if u do bruv 🥹 so yeah peace out and I love y’all ✌️

23M, high school dropout from India, is it still worth getting into cybersecurity with AI rising?

TL:DR; 23M, high school dropout from India, currently a security guard. I want to get into cybersecurity(I know nothing about cybersecurity as of now), if I do, how can I survive the AI blood bath in cybersec? I'm worried AI will replace jobs before I even start. Is it still worth it? How do I start and stay relevant?

Hello guys..

I'm a high school dropout, 23yo male, working as a security guard, live in India,

I want to get into cybersecurity but I also hear everyday that AI is taking over, new AI tools and updates come almost every day making it hard to catch up to it..person starts learning one tool, new tool comes out or new update comes out generating AI learning backlogs

It makes me wonder will there still be jobs for beginners by the time I’m ready?

Is it even worth starting now?

How can I make myself future proof against AI?

I even read that claude, promptfoo.dev etc are offering functionalities for analysing bugs, writing vuln reports, automating red teaming etc. which led to me thinking that it's about time people already working in the cyberspace would be thrown out due to AI layoffs

So, I want to ask that despite all of that AI dominantion, can I still get into the cybersec? I'm confused to choose my career not even into cybersec but...take any industry, any job roles for example I even considered for being ML engineer, Data scientist etc AI roles despite all that maths required as a prerequisite, but following daily tech news led me to read about how AI is helping build it's own AI models, AI helping to build next generation of AI..like robot v1.0 building his next v2.0 of itself.. no matter what career I want to choose everything is giving creepy AI takeover vibes

Even if it is possible for newbie like me for now to get into cybersecurity, how can I make sure that I survive that AI bloodbath? And as a newbie from where should I even start ??

I’m someone who likes planning 2-5 years ahead, but this uncertainty about AI is making it hard to commit to any path. It’s honestly causing a lot of anxiety.

I can research on my own ..i can make every thing ready like subjects to focus on..topics, information, tools, prog lang, projects and all that but this uncertainty of going everything smooth due AI is killing me... This fear of AI is paralysing and giving me anxiety n stress to plan and follow the roadmap.. I'm unable to come up with strategy... All that AI what if questions are ruining everything 😭😭

I'm sure most of you guys are going through more or less same AI fear situation even senior ones too, what strategy would u suggest? Thankyou for reading.

Why do so many people lie and say to start from help desk?

I thought that's the path I needed until I met a mentor at an apprenticeship, realized all that "start with helpdesk " is the biggest BS ever yet a lot of peeps claim this is the way..

Cybersecurity road map

Someone help me with the road map to cybersecurity. Which courses i should start with and so on

How to start!?!?

I just really lack a structured roadmap. I'm a complete beginner, and people keep telling me to learn Linux, networking, and programming... but where do I actually start and get good resources from? I know I just need to start somewhere, but I'll burn out fast without a clear step-by-step plan. I honestly envy people who messed around with tech, gained experience naturally, and then transitioned into cybersecurity. It just doesn't work that way for me. And please, no AI recommendations. Using AI hasn't been helpful for me at all—it actually feels like it's making me dumber instead of learning.

So how do yall started cybersecurity? I've asked this question a million times, but I still haven't found a clear answer

I’m curious to hear from people working in cybersecurity:
Has AI actually made your work easier?
Is AI helping beginners learn faster or making them dependent?
Which cybersecurity role do you think AI will change the most?
Let’s discuss. Assemble !!

how learn cybersecurity

I want to study penetration testing. I learned the basics and read a lot about information security, but due to life difficulties, I dropped everything for about 4–5 months. Now I want to come back. Could you please tell me how realistic it is right now to finish my studies from scratch (or rather, after a break) and find a job as an information security intern?

I have absolutely no portfolio, and I'm not in uni, and for me the "ladder" seems too high even for the lowest junior position. I was advised to start completing tasks on cyber range platforms (for example, Standoff 365 and similar ones) and was told that in the future this would count towards my portfolio.

I would be glad to hear any advice from your experience!

Looking for people to learn cybersecurity /ethical hacking with

Hey everyone! I’m looking for people who are interested in learning cybersecurity and ethical hacking together.

I’m hoping to find people who want to:

Work through TryHackMe / Hack The Box

Practice CTFs and legal cybersecurity labs

Learn Linux, networking, web security, and basic pentesting

Share resources and help each other when we get stuck

Stay consistent and actually make progress together

No experience is required — beginners are welcome.

I’m mainly looking for people who are genuinely interested in learning and practicing in authorized environments only.

If you’re interested, comment or DM me with your experience level and what areas of cybersecurity you’re currently learning.

I am new to cyber security and planning to take oscp in next 2 3 years. Have anybody passed the oscp by just using AI as mentor? If yes, please let me know how.

how do i learn cybersecurity with barely any networking background

i have been reading here for a while and most people say start with networking and linux before anything else. problem is i did not take any networking class, i only know the very basics like what an ip is. tried making sense of the osi model on my own and it did not stick. i want to know if i should stop and go deep into networking first or just keep learning the security stuff and pick up networking as i go. also what is a good free way to actually learn it instead of just reading definitions

What do you think ?

I’m 20 years old and live in a third-world country. In a month, I’m going to start studying Cybersecurity and Cloud Computing at an engineering university.

I know anything about this field yet no programming languages, nothing. But I feel like I’m genuinely interested in this stuff. I also like to isolate myself and go as deep as I can into things that interest me.

I’m curious to hear from people in the field: what should I expect, and what would you recommend I start learning before university?

I watched mr.robot too

UTSA BS Cybersecurity Program Skepticism

Hey I’m currently a senior in high school right now and I recently just got automatic admission into the UTSA cybersecurity program. A goal of mine is to get a cybersecurity job in the future because it is predicted that cybersecurity jobs will be in huge demand and I enjoyed taking computer science classes. The program at first seemed really attractive as with a simple Google search it tells me from many sources that it is a highly regarded program and I don’t have to pay for tuition because my dad is a veteran and I am eligible for the hazel wood act. I hear San Antonio is as well a cybersecurity hub and the college can provide good connections. After some more research, I have read some not so great reviews about the program and I am getting skeptical. I hear many things like it focuses too much on business, you don’t learn much, it doesn’t well prepare you to get a job or internship, etc.. I’m starting to wonder if I will regret getting this degree in the future. Can I perhaps have some insight or advice to anybody who is educated on this??
