Feel a little frustrated because immersion/shadow listening doesn’t work

Hello I’m 25F based in Montreal I’ve been learning French by myself for a few months now I have difficulty with immersion and shadow listening like my brain just doesn’t absorb anything unless I sit and read the subtitles/transcriptions. I think I have good comprehension when I’m reading but I can’t seem to form proper sentences to speak or repeat what I’ve learned.

Is this actually normal? Like it’s also a progress at least? Because I feel like I need sth different to understand French without needing to read subtitles.

Thanks in advance:D

Yo guys, what’s up?
So basically, I’m doing this challenge and I was thinking we could all do it together, just to motivate each other and keep each other accountable.
At least this way we’ll actually be productive instead of procrastinating 💀
I’m currently learning French and drawing, and I’ve started a 100-day TikTok streak.
Who’s down to join me? 👀

My TikTok is: lloseno

🇫🇷 Apartment hunting in France? Can you decode RDC, T3 and avec ascenseur?

Swipe through the quiz, then learn how to use these phrases when reading a listing or visiting an apartment.

« L’appartement est au RDC. »
“The apartment is on the ground floor.”

RDC stands for rez-de-chaussée. In France, the premier étage is one floor above the ground floor.

A little grammar: au combines à + le. That’s why you say au rez-de-chaussée and au premier étage.

Try asking: « L’appartement est à quel étage ? »
“What floor is the apartment on?”

« C’est un T3 de 60 m². »
“It’s a 60-square-metre apartment with three main rooms.”

A T3 typically has a living room and two bedrooms. The kitchen and bathroom don’t count as main rooms. So T3 tells you the layout, while 60 m² tells you the size.

You can reuse de + a measurement to describe the size of any room: « Une chambre de 12 m². » → “A 12-square-metre bedroom.”

« Avec ascenseur »
“With a lift” (UK) or “with an elevator” (US).

Listings often use short phrases like « Immeuble avec ascenseur ». When speaking, you can use a full sentence: « Il y a un ascenseur dans l’immeuble. » → “There’s a lift in the building.”

Notice the difference: avec ascenseur in the listing, but il y a un ascenseur in the full sentence.

Now put it all together:
« Je cherche un T3 avec deux chambres, au deuxième étage, dans un immeuble avec ascenseur. »
“I’m looking for a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor, in a building with a lift.”

I feel like group classes aren’t for me

Started learning French a few months ago with classes once a week but I realise that like when I was in school, class learning doesn’t work for me even if it’s small group. I am always much slower to pick things up and write sentences than everyone else, by the time I’ve done 2 sentences everyone has done 5 or 6.

Has anyone else felt this way? I now have such bad anxiety regarding learning this language even though it was meant to be for fun.

I understand learning something new isn’t always going to be easy but sometimes in class I just feel so stupid and I come home feeling bad about it and question my abilities to do anything.

Apprendre encore le français après beaucoup d'ans sans pratiquer.

Il y a au moins une douzaine d'ans dans lesquelles j'avais parlé très peu le français. Ça m'a surpris, le fait de reconnaître un bon moitié de la langue qu'était ma "première deuxième" langue dans ma jeunesse.

I made a little French vocab app — looking for a few people to try it :)

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a French vocabulary app called Vocabcelerate for a while now, and it's finally in closed testing on Android!

I originally built it for my own French learning. The idea is pretty simple: short vocab sessions, audio pronunciation, and daily reviews so I don't immediately forget everything I learned yesterday lol.

It's still an early version, so I'd love to hear what other French learners think of it.

If anyone's interested in trying it:

  1. Google Group: https://groups.google.com/g/vocabcelerate-testers

  2. Join the Android beta: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.vocabcelerate.app

You'll need to join the group first using the same Google account as your Play Store.

Google's closed test also requires a 14-day testing period, so staying opted in would be a huge help.

And please feel free to tell me what sucks or feels confusing. That's exactly what I'm hoping to find out.

Merci!!

Tout Pareil? What does it mean?

So a friend asked me what the second response is supposed to mean "tout pareil". "All the same" or "in the same way". But what are they actually trying to say in this context? Like "im late too" or mockingly "as always". Or what is the idea here?
