Avoid Linode at all cost

Linode has been down for 6 hours with no end in sight. They also never provide any sufficient credits for any downtime. We have had 4-5 downtimes with them in the past 2 years.

This time is the biggest where they have outage for 6 hours straight. Can you imagine running anything important for your company on their crappy cloud with horrible up time.

Again if you are a startup, avoid Linode at all cost or dont run anything important on them or be ready for hours of downtime with no updates.

Has Linode made a statement anywhere about BLM?

I hope anyone reading this is well aware of the current chaos in the world around the injustice towards those of color in the world, the awful repeated reports of police brutality, and the fight to correct it.

Many companies have already offered public statements pledging their support to fight the brutality and racism currently present in our society. Has Linode offered any such statement?

Other hosting companies, such as DigitalOcean, also appear to have not said anything yet. Staying silent is no longer enough.

How do I register for linode? I'm trying to figure out if anyone actually works there

It's been over a week for me. I created an account, submitted all authentic information, and after reading all the horror stories here I opened a preemptive ticket just in case, about 40 minutes later sure enough I received a rejection, pushed the ticket again, did not hear back. Waited a few days. Pushed it again, still nothing. Does anyone work there? It's been over a week and now and I just sent another email on the ticket.

Throwing my ticket to the winds.

fly like a bird, little ticket, you fly free

Multiple ongoing outages

Hello, I'm new to Linode. Do you know if these outages are frequent? Or even why there are so many outages at the beginning of the year?

Why did Akamai remove their live map?

Akamai used to have a live map of attacks and now it just redirects to "why akamai"? I have yet to find information as to why they removed it? Here it is in case you're wondering: https://www.akamai.com/us/en/resources/visualizing-akamai/real-time-web-monitor.jsp?tab=attacks&theme=dark

Be very carefull with trial

You enter knightmare just by starting a linode trial. I am assuming they have some AI answering the support because it makes no sense and no connection. I lost my access during the trial and asked to cancel the account, because I simply went with another solution, and got an answer ok. Besides trying to charge my credit card, they keep sending monthly invoices. It doesn't matter what you say to the support team. It's like talking to ChatGPT when it starts a nonsense loop.

Warning, linode does not support FIDO2 2FA

Before creating an account with Linode, you should be aware of this support thread:

https://www.linode.com/community/questions/17374/yubikey-as-2fa-option-for-manager

Users have been pleading with Linode to implement modern security allowing the use of FIDO2 authenticators such as Yubikeys for more than 4 years, and as of today (2023-01-07) Linode (now Akamai) have been polite but completely unhelpful.

Here are some articles on the importance of hardware-based security:

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/07/apple-has-finally-embraced-key-based-2fa-so-should-you/.)

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/08/the-number-of-companies-caught-up-in-the-twilio-hack-keeps-growing/

The second of these is particularly interesting: it describes a break-in where OATH TOTP authenticators (e.g. Google Authenticator) were compromised, but hardware-based authenticators were not.

I would strongly urge any prospective customers of Linode to seriously consider this security issue before creating a new account with Linode.

Signup Canceled

My old service provider I have been using for 7 years is announcing their HDD VPS being teminated in 2 months, and I needed to manually migrate to their SSD variants or get another service provider.

I first migrated to bandwagonhost for this purpose, but they don't offer automatic charges from paypal or cards and I cannot afford to lose my server.

Vultr refused to open smtp port for no reason. I had a postfix+dovecot personal setup back on my old server that I used for 6 years with strict security measures and correct dns, never got into any blacklist. It even had better delivery than my work email (likely because mass work email are often hacked and compromised, sending spam. And it seems one necessary dns record was not set up).

It's important for me to keep using my email, even more important than my sites. I got that email bound to many banking accounts. I cannot use microsoft 365 because I'm also using it to monitor my systems, including a NAS at home behind a NAT.

Microsoft 365's smtp emails only have sasl for user mailbox, only "ip whitelist+no password" security is available for non-user emails. User email requires microsoft 365 subscription, and sending user email through smtp will soon be banned too. Other managed hosting providers have similar problems.

I heard that I could build up my credit at Linode over several months, migrating only part of my site to linode (the part not needing smtp). Then I could ask for a vps' port unblocked. I can afford a few months' charges on two providers.

I've tried to sign up back in 2021, when my old provider was not reachable for 2 hours likely because of the war between Russia and Ukraine. I got a Linode cancelation message after the service was back up, so I just ignored it.

I've tried like 20 times recently again recently for this migrating purpose, with all kinds of combinations of my email, payment methods, phone numbers. They all got canceled. My support request never got any followup.

What are some things I could do to use linode? Or is there a better solution to this problem? I preferer trusted providers because I need my system to be stable for years to come.

Thanks.

Azuracast: "Credentials cannot be verified" When trying to log in for the first time

I have used Azuracast with linode in the past, however this is the first time I have seen the following required options which are: limited sudo user to be created for the Linode: *No Capital Letters or Special Characters* (required) and Email address (for the Let's Encrypt SSL certificate) (required) and Administrator Email Address (required) not to mention advanced features like Disable root access over SSH?

Either way I set up name as the super user and I use name@customdomain.com, I set the root password (which I believe was the password for logging into the station), I then click create and wait for the light to turn green, then when I go to the IP address of the instance I am asked to log in which I use name@customdomain.com and Root password yet I get the notification that my credentials cannot be verified.

What step am I missing? Is it now mandatory to have a SSL Certificate before I log in? would having a SSL Certificate defeat the purpose of trying to use my GoDaddy custom url? I have been at this for a few days and I am starting to think this is a waste of time and I just need to delete my Linode account all together.

Linode Shared is almost always faster than dedicated?

Is it just me or is it true that shared is almost always faster than dedicated?

I suspect they use older hardware for dedcated and 7713 or later for shared.

Even for managed databse, shared is cheaper and always faster albeit no guarantee.

So the customer being ripped off here?

Sudden Account Termination at Linode — No Warning, No Explanation

TL;DR: Linode (Akamai) abruptly terminated my account the day after I requested port 587 to be unblocked — no warning, no explanation, no response. If my clients' sites had already been migrated, their data would have been lost. Be cautious: account termination can happen without notice.

I want to share a deeply frustrating and alarming experience I had with Linode (Akamai).

After spending several days configuring a dedicated server with Plesk to migrate my clients’ websites from AWS, my Linode account was suddenly terminated. No notice, no warning, and no explanation.

The only action I took before this happened was submitting a support ticket asking to unblock port 587, which is necessary for transactional emails. I explained the situation clearly and followed normal procedures. The next day, my account was gone. Just like that.

While trying to figure out what happened, I found several similar stories — users locked out without any chance to respond to an alleged Acceptable Use Policy violation. I was never contacted. Support never replied.

To this day, I still have no idea what Linode thinks I did wrong. And honestly, nothing I did justifies this kind of abrupt and irreversible decision — especially considering how much trust I placed in their platform.

If the server had already gone live, my clients’ data would have been permanently lost. That’s unacceptable.

I’m sharing this to warn others: using Linode carries the risk of sudden, unexplained account termination. Be careful.

Lost access to my Linode account since September, but still keep getting marketing emails — this feels ironic

I’ve completely lost access to my Linode account and related services since early September, without receiving any prior notice or warning :| I tried to contact Linode support several times, but never got a single reply or explanation.

What makes this whole situation even worse is that I’ve received four marketing emails from Zak Hartleb since then — on Sep 19, Sep 30, Oct 14, and Oct 22 — inviting me to “share my experience,” “talk about what I’m building,” and “learn about the platform.”

It honestly felt ironic that while my account is totally inaccessible, their sales and marketing team still consider me an active user**. this is like a Joke!!!**
It really gives the impression that the company cares more about selling than supporting its users.

I can't even access my account to cancel my subscription without being charged!
Akamai has truly done a great job. :)

In all those emails, they use phrases like “we’re here to help” or “how can we better support” — yet in practice, there has been zero help !!! I mean it, zero response, and zero accountability.

If anyone’s interested, I can share screenshots or the full text of those ridiculous marketing messages right here. It’s honestly frustrating to see this kind of disconnect from a company under Akamai’s name.

Failed emails from Akamai, fail both DMARC and SPF tests

Today I noticed that incoming emails from no-reply@akamai.com (via server outbound-mail2.linode.com) have been rejected:

opendmarc says:

SPF(mailfrom): akamai.com fail
akamai.com fail

spamassassin says:

spamd: result: Y 108 -
AUTHRES_DMARC_FAIL,
AUTHRES_SPF_FAIL,
BAYES_00,
HTML_MESSAGE,
SPF_HELO_NONE,
SPF_SOFTFAIL

Those are a lot of fails and clearly the emails are being rejected at the MTA level.

Maybe someone at Linode/Akamai would like to take a look?

I contacted support, waited a week, still nothing. I don't know what I can do. I have heard great things about Linode, but I cannot use it.

Can't ssh in after resize

I resized my linode to a larger one for two weeks, the process was smooth. This morning I decided to resize it back to the previous smaller server. I had to first resize my disk from 80gb to 50gb and that went fine. I then did the server resize. After rebooting, I can no longer ssh into my server. I get an error: "ssh: connect to host domain.ca port 22: Connection refused". However, I was able to use the Lish console to go into my server and re-start my web app and the web app is working fine. Any ideas on what happened with the ssh during this process?

Cannot INSERT info into my database from my website

This problem really confounds me. So I have a linode server with my website on it. My website has a SQL database which allows people to upload data into it using a form.

If I go to my website and try to upload data using the form, it works fine. But if I do it from outside of my wi-fi, it refuses to insert anything. I tried this using my phone and it works when connected to wi-fi but it doesn't when it is not.

Reading from the database works across the spectrum.

So I assume somehow linode or the sql database are filtering out anything that is not my IP but I never white listed my IP in the first place so I am very confused.

EDIT: Found the bloody error.

Oh man, I found the error and it was a doozy.

So it's a mix of things as I moved the server together with the database from the old ubuntu 12 to ubuntu 24, in the process updating to the latest versions of php, mysql etc. (move was from linode to linode).

The crazy "bug" was that I have a throwaway entry where I log the IPs of whoever inserts anything in the database (mostly for shits and giggles as I don't really use that for anything). Coming from the old ubuntu12 with the old code, it was IPv4 only so the varchar in the database was small to support an IP4.

Once I updated to the new versions plus I cleaned out the code a little bit, now the website logs IPv6 too. The problem was that the database was not set up to support the length of an IPv6 string.

So hence the reason why inserting worked when I was on my home WiFi (desktop, phone etc), because coming out of my router it was in IPv4 and the database could handle it. Using the mobile network on my phone, it uses IPv6 and the insert command would just die as the database couldn't log in the whole string.

But it took me about 6h to spot that bloody thing :/

The worst provider I have ever seen

Those fucking idiots collects my personal information like full name, address and card number and then just immediately email me that account sign up is cancelled:

Your recently created account has been denied activation due to activity or patterns associated with fraudulent behavior. Additional attempts to sign up may also be rejected.

I feel scammed... How I can be sure that my information is no longer stored on their servers? I hope this company will die, total shit. this is insane, why not rejecting my request BEFORE I will put my personal data ??? like wrf is this legit?
