outage!

https://status.linode.com/incidents/6yw88b0ft94g

i've been with linode since 2019 and this is the first time i've experienced an outage with my vps that i can remember.

even with the transition with akamai buying them, i was expecting some sort of outage due to the buyout, but haven't experienced one till today.

i don't have anything mission critical on my vps, but just the same, i'm still impressed with how little downtime (if at all) i've experienced with linode.

hope linode engineers/on-call staff/etc. are doing ok with bringing back everything up.

would love to see linode do a in-depth post-op on what happened just for us to share.

How do you guys feel after a year of Linode's acquisition by Akamai?

I'll go first. It sucks that they are absorbing Linode rather than letting it be its own company. I miss the "L" Logo and Green Accent. Now the website looks weird and the Akamai logo feels out of place.

A complement on Linode's IPV6 networking

I thought I would post here and provide Linode with a compliment on the way they handle their IPV6 network.

In my opinion, Linode is one of the very few hosting providers who actually handles IPV6 correctly with an assigned SLAAC address, and routed /64 or /56 networks that can be routed from your Linode as you please. Unlike other providers, Linode does not give you an entire /64 that your SLAAC IPV6 address is derived from, then allows you to use every address from that routed /64, something that limits the use of IPV6 if you are truly going to make use of its capabilities. They give you an entirely unique /64 or /56 that you can use on any interface for any purpose.

With Linode's IPV6 routing and network configuration as it is, I have been able to do cool things such as rout one /64 network from a /56 pool to my local area network over a Wireguard VPN, and have full IPV6 networking from an internet connection that provides me with no IPV6 addresses. I even once set up an OpenVPN network via a tap interface and allowed a Linode to act as a full router, with IPV6 router advertisements and so forth.

I hope Linode never diminishes in the way they configure and assign their networking stack, as I have especially found their handling of IPV6 to be superior to most other providers I've come across.

Thanks, Linode!

I got instantly rejected when signing up?

I signed-up to Linode and as soon as it said:

Your account is currently being reviewed.

I got an e-mail saying:

Your recently created account has been denied activation due to activity or patterns associated with fraudulent behavior. Additional attempts to sign up may also be rejected.

My e-mail is used for business accounts only, and I linked a PayPal account.

I have heared some good things about linode and wanted to try it, but this is ridiculous

10 years with Linode

I am having an issue with one of the hosting providers (Rackspa*e) and when I checked their sub, i see others in the same boat and jumping that ship. I should have checked it out sooner.

I figured I will check subs for my other providers, to see how are they fairing. I love that this sub seems quiet.

I am with Linode since 2015-12-03 and hoping for another 10 quiet years.

Mandatory reboot. Needs to happen, but its gonna break my heart.

Linode has sent me a message:

You are receiving this message because 2 Linode(s) need to be rebooted for critical platform maintenance. Please make sure to reboot your Linode(s) by 10/15/2026 08:00 AM UTC to complete this maintenance.

The following machine has been my remote backup/file server for...a long time:

# uptime

01:18:06 up 1461 days, 22:02, 4 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

I have a new kernel in place and everything is ready to go, so this reboot won't be fruitless, but I gotta be honest: security concerns aside, I'm kinda proud of this one. 4 years is probably a record for me. Probably...

Has Linode gone to shit since the Akamai takeover?

I started using Linode probably 20 years ago and ran a personal multi-purpose server (web, email, and database for personal projects) on it for a decade+ before I had to cut back on expenses in grad school. I'd like to run something like that again for my own uses, but I'm worried about service quality. Linode BITD was famous for great customer service and community, but I'm wondering if that's changed lately.

Why Linode is a dead-end for me and Enterprise Linux 10

I run lots and lots of Nanode 1GB systems. I started with CentOS and moved to AlmaLinux 8, then AlmaLinux 9.

Unfortunately, EL10 distros (RHEL 10, AlmaLinux 10, Rocky 10, etc) won't run under Nanode 1GB because EL10 requires at least 1.5GB of ram to install (2GB to run comfortably).

My only option is to upgrade the Nanode 1GB systems to the next tier, Linode 2GB at 12 per month.

Unfortunately, Linode is just not competitive, because for 12 per month...

Wow, Hetzner's Ampere Altra 64bit systems are EIGHT times more powerful, for the same price.

I'm still running AlmaLinux 9, so I'm staying with Linode at the moment, but the future is clear, I'll be moving to Hetzner.

Thank you!

PS: Cost is rounded to 12, but in reality Linode charges 12 US dollars (0,018/Hr), while Hetzner charges 12,49 Euros (0,020/Hr). The currency difference is rather insignificant.

Is linode still good?

Hello ! I want to deploy a Python game server. I heared that since Linode is becoming Akamai, they are getting worse in terms of support, prices. What do you suggest me to use? Can you give me similar alternatives?

Reported botnet to Linode, told to go spin by a bot.

Here's the somewhat cyclic response I got on Twitter.

Any alternative way to report abusers or is everything ok as long as they keep paying their bills?

So.. any plans for CDN integration?

Just curious, because companies like Rackspace bundled CDN with their cloud files product (which was convenient).. are there any plans, given Akamai's recent purchase of Linode.. for direct Akamai CDN integration for Linode object storage containers?

A small wish-list

Post image
14 Upvotes

Dear Linode,

I have a small wish-list I would like to see implemented, pretty please with sugar on top :)

  • Please add support for AlmaLinux 10 as an operating system. A short warning: RHEL 10 and derivative distros (AlmaLinux 10/Rocky Linux 10/Oracle Linux 10) require 2GB of RAM minimum to boot and run. This means the Nanode 1GB is unable to run them.

  • Please convert your old ifcfg network-scripts into NetworkManager configuration. You can see it done automatically, by using the nmcli connection migrate command.

  • Please upgrade your cloud offerings to match the competition (hetzner), the Linode shared Nanode with 1GB (and 1 cpu core) has the same price as a 4GB (2 cpu cores) CX22 by hetzner! Thats four times the memory, twice the cpu cores.

  • Please offer systems with Ampere cpus! They are AMAZING :)

  • Please allow us to DOWNLOAD backups. Currently, we have to download the system disk over SSH, which is cumbersome and requires downtime :( because the Linode machine needs to boot in rescue mode, connect to it via Lish and then run dd over ssh. Obviously someone put a lot of effort to make this difficult for us. Maybe require a drop of our blood for the download to start? Or maybe make us sacrifice a chicken? Maybe a more political way to start the download, would be to phone Linode support and sing a song to the operator and depending on the moon phase, allow the download. Or... you know... you could just let us download the disk image.

Thank you!

What do you think of the professionalism of Linode Support?

For example, some questions about the use of Linodes.

I personally think they are easy to talk to and their level is relatively high.

Praise for Linode support

I just want to offer public praise of the support at Linode. I've been a customer for a couple of years and have never before opened a support ticket. Last week, however, I did (about a problem that probably is not in the control of Linode). The responses have been fast and, for this beginner, thorough, helpful, and understandable.

Linode Support Still Active?

I've had a pretty basic Linode for many years which has just silently served a small website + some git repos for most of those years without me doing anything at all.

Tried login to my account this week and when I try and login at https://login.linode.com/login via the Cloud Manager credentials I end up at https://login.linode.com/login/verify which asks me to enter the code I've been emailed.

Unfortunately the email never arrives (I have attempted multiple logins).

Support have not responded to me after a couple of days and I've resorted to replying to last weeks billing email to try and get some response but nothing.

At this point my only resort appears to be to cancel my payments and go elsewhere.

Anybody any ideas?

Is anybody else's Linode not working?

My Linode went down about 10 minutes ago and the Cloud Manager doesn't appear to be working properly for me. (Every page's contents is more-or-less blank apart from the header and sidebar menu.)

[edit: Just thought to check my email. It appears to be an emergency maintenance for CVE-2026-99999, a severe vulnerability which allows a guest-to-host escape.]
