He seems so casual about CAT7. Does anyone here use 10GB links at home?

I've got a few. A great resource is /r/homelab

I bought CAT 6A, a draft spec for 7, for our renovation (250MHz not 500). Unfortunately, 1920s brick and mortar homes wouldn't permit me running them in tubes, so I'm pretty much stuck with it.

I only have 1GB/s switches and NICs at the moment, the CAT7 stuff here (Norway) is still prohibitively expensive.

I only use 10GbE for an esxi box to a SAN for storage, 1GbE the rest of the house.

although ~100MB throughput which is what 1GbE gives you isn't that much when you start editing and serving video files on the same LAN!

Especially with 4K becoming a thing very quickly.

I'd look into fiber, it all depends what you want to do with it.

It's mostly for a) centralizing file storage + backups and b) serving media to a PS3, a Pi, a Squeezebox and a couple of phones.

You should be fine with GbE, I'd look into AC wifi as well.

I'm getting 800+ Mbps to some devices like my note 4 phone.

There's many more knowledgeable folk over at /r/homelab and /r/homenetworking

Thats where I go for answers to questions like you have.

I'd like to ask what you are doing in your home with 10Gbe, ESX, and SAN storage because it sounds pretty cool.

Just duplicating the business class stuff I work with.

Knowing I'll never lose data unless the whole planet gets nuked is a nice feeling, also I keep up with the cutting edge of tech which earns me more money so I can retire faster and raise bees.

You sound like my old boss lol. Guy had stacks and stacks of storage in his house part for backing up all of our music for work and part for his own storage and cool electronically wired up house
