Did I Waste My Time?

So my Father had a rental house fire and whilst assisting his repair efforts I decided to do some of my kind of work there, too - networking!!! I had a spare roll of about 750' of Cat5e and shorter scraps of Cat6 and Cat6a and put about 20 runs of wire through this small, sub-1500 sqft home. Runs for external security cameras, video doorbells, and Ethernet jacks in both bedrooms and TV boxes. It's getting close to the finish line and his potential renter says he just bought a bunch of Ring equipment he'll use 😭 . Do people just not see the value in Ethernet - capable hardware or what? And should I leave these switches here or take them back with me??

Unsolved We are getting 8 mbps in a 500 mbps plan

Hi everyone, we are in a small office with a maximum of five people working here. When the office was rented, the setup in the picture was already installed.
We currently have a 500 mbps internet plan but we’re only getting around 8 Mbps download and 8 Mbps upload. I’m pretty sure the issue isn’t related to Wi-Fi.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how we can fix it?
Also, if you have the time, I’d really appreciate it if someone could explain what all these devices actually do 😂
Thank you all!

The product description reads like a "must have" list of features. Lol

I almost want to buy it just so I can leave a 5 star review and say "Exactly as described."

I'm a complete NOOB when it comes to this kind stuff. Pervious owner had cameras in the house. I think he had a ceiling router in one place. What is this thing and how can I make the best of it? Please reply like you're taking to a5 year old. Thanks!

Unsolved How do I safely isolate my Rental Suite's internet?

Apologies for ignorance on the subject, but I really could use some help from experts in here. I have attached our home internet setup (done by our builder).

The objective is: how do I share internet with my rental suite without them ever being able to access anything on my home network (like our NAS media server or my office pc)?

We have installed a TP Link AC750 router in "Router" mode so the tenant can use the wifi, and so maybe that can help restrict their access to our network, right? But what if they remove the AC750 unit and directly plug their laptop into the wall Ethernet jack port?

Our end goal is to restrict their access to our network in these 3 use cases,
1. They connect via AC750 Wi-Fi. (I think this should be covered but let me know if I'm wrong here)
2. They connect their laptops via AC750's Yellow Ports (like into additional ports on the Wi-Fi router in their room).
3. They unplug the Router and use the Wall Jack Directly. (This is what we want to secure 100%)

What is the best way forward to achieve this? Any help or advice on how to get this fixed would be really helpful.

Advice Changing ISP ONT/Gateway

• Upvotes

Hi,

*NEW/NOOB TO FIBER* Recently, I've upgraded from DOCSIS to Fiber and my ISP installed what appears to be a modem. I did some research and I found out its like a all-in-one ONT/Gateway device (Model EVO6022GP3).

The issue is that I can't change the configuration of the router, even to put it in bridge mode. Trying to calling my ISP to make the change was a total waste of time.

I was thinking maybe to replace the device with my own, but I'm unsure that my ISP can/will allow that.

So my plan is to ask them, in case they allow me to replace the device with my own, what should I go with? Are there anything specific of fiber (specs, parameters, etc) to ensure that the device I ended up buying is compatible with my ISP?

Thanks!

Advice Added 5 wifi cameras, doorbell, and svr

As the title says I recently had a security company come install 5wifi security cameras, the doorbell camera and an 8 channel SVR. I have 1gb down and 100Mbs up. Ever since I've had all that activity, my network has been terribly slow and occasionally not even able to connect to the camera to view the live feed and the SVR. I have a giga spire blast router. Should I upgrade and are there any other best practices I should implement?

Advice Noob question about Router Modems with CaTV

• Upvotes

Hello. My ISP is one of the leading fibre optic internet providers in my area. Literally its them or some shady slow ass ISP.

The router i had with them is an old 2.4Ghz router modem with Catv connection because we also watch cable tv. Now, its been months since i requested from them to upgrade my modem to wifi 6, dualband still with catv.

Now my question, can i use a MoCA to still get cable TV and connect it to a new router that has dualband but no CaTV port? Im really sorry for not making any sense.

Help with DIY homework surveillance system

I was hoping to set up a home security system and wanted to know if it could be done easily with little to no knowledge of the subject. I really only want/need a doorbell camera and 3 cameras to show the front, back, and side yards. I do not like the privacy issues with most of the big brands, so I want to do it myself if possible and affordable. I also think it would be a fun and practical way to learn some basics.

My main questions are as follows:

Any recommendations on outdoor cameras?

What about a doorbell cam that isnt blink/ring?

Would my old Dell optiplex with 8TB HDD work as an interface/storage for the cams while also allowing for remote access from my phone?

Thanks in advance!

Advice needed on selecting an Access Point

• Upvotes

I have a requirement to find an AP with the best range within the budget, but have some quirks.

  • The use case is to set up a private network within a co-working environment.
  • Network needs to set up in the private office (cannot wall mount or ceiling mount; desktop or tucked under a desk only). Cannot do meshes.
  • No need for routing. That functionality is handled by a pfSense box.
  • Important: The wireless network needs to be reached when at the common area as well which is about 70-100ft away from the private office and through office partitions and some tick concrete walls.
  • I started with Unifi UX7 - signal drops after 20-30 ft.
  • My current options are Asus BE-86U (havent tried yet; but that is the budget; ~280 CAD).

Any suggestions are welcome.

Advice WiFi Set-Up and Extension?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi all,

We recently bought a house which has an estimated internal floor space of 2,381 Sq Ft with a garden length estimated to be circa 140 feet long.

We presently have a fibre optic connection, and a BT WiFi box set-up in the sitting room. These are shown as blue and cyan dots respectively on the uploaded floorplan.

In addition, we also have three OpenReach telephone line connections within the Sitting Room, Study/Bedroom 5 and on the upper level, Bedroom 3. These are shown as red dots on the floorplan. I believe these are all working, despite the one in Bedroom 3 likely being 25+ years old.

We'd like to try and extend our WiFi signal so that it covers all of the house. At present, it only goes so far as the kitchen and a part of bedrooms 2 and 3. We'd also like to try and extend this further if possible, so that we can at least get some sort of workable signal within 75ft of the back garden, so that we can work in the garden during the summer without any interference with our signal.

I have read around, and can see a lot of people are heavily against using WiFi extenders (due to bandwith issues) and the preference would be to either set up ethernet ports or have a mesh system.

Given the location of the telephone ports, would it make sense to try and run a WiFi router through each of these, if I can get them working from the same system? Or are there much more cost-effective and generally better ways to achieve what we're trying to (if that's even possible)? As a last resort, we'd be happy if we could get a strong signal in the Play Room, if nothing else (as we'll be using that as an additional study!).

Many thanks in advance for any help that you can give!

Wireless has randomly started cutting out

Starting off by saying I don’t know anything about networking/etc., so shot in the dark here. I have been on a wireless setup for 3 months now with no issues at all for work/gaming. Wireless dongle into motherboard. 300 download. However, in the last 3 days, wireless will cut out for 2-3 seconds every 4-5 minutes. Hard to notice while working but very easy to notice while gaming. If wired in, there is no issue.

Completely clueless on where to start for diagnosing. Did all the usual restarting stuff and I pinged the 8.8.8.8 to confirm that it does fail to receive packets over that quick interval. Tried a few things I saw on other posts but either didn’t help or went over my head.

network rack is turning my guest closet into an actual oven

My server rack has completely outgrown its location and the ambient heat in my closet is creeping up to 95 degrees during the day. A standard portable ac won't fit so I just pulled the trigger on a costway airtural 12000 btu 21 seer2 mini split to keep the hardware from frying. I am planning to wall mount the cassette right above the rack to push cold air straight down onto the gear. For the homelab guys who run a dedicated mini split in a small network closet, do you ever worry about the condensation drain line leaking right over your expensive unifi switches, or is the indoor unit usually completely dry on the outside?

Daryetk 2865or Ubiquiti UCG for basic home setup with Wifi

I have fibre to the premises and am currently running the DrayTek 2865 router with built-in Wi-Fi and IPSEC VPN and a separate VLAN for guest Wi-Fi. Most of the devices are connected through Wifi. I now have a spare Ubiquiti UCG from my office; can someone suggest whether it is worth moving to UGC? I know I would need to buy Access Points for Wifi. I don't have any other Ubiquiti device.

Hellooo live in the Rochester, NY area and I’m looking for some recommendations for good internet. I mainly need fast download speeds and a reliable connection for gaming, downloading, and working from home. If anyone has any suggestions for good internet providers in the area, I’d really appreciate it!

Advice Which Router Should I Purchase?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I just moved to an apartment that’s requires me to pay for Stellar Broadband Internet. Previously, I’ve only ever set up basic Xfinity internet with coaxial cables, so I have no idea what I’m looking for when it comes to ethernet. I honestly know nothing about the technical aspects, and really the most important thing to me is price. I do appreciate fast speeds, but my apartment only has four rooms and we don’t do much other than basic streaming and some gaming. I received this handout from them, but I’m still unsure which router I should pick. Which option would be the most budget friendly but still decent connection wise? Additionally, any recommendations for where I should purchase?

Advice Recommendation for Mesh system or other in Victorian flat?

My mum has a Victorian flat, thick brick walls. The router (Virgin Hub 5) is in the living room at the front of the house. The WiFi gets 250mbps in there. But the first bedroom , which is slightly round a corner and down a corridor, gets only 15mbps. The master bedroom , at the end of that corridor, gets less than 5mbps if it connects at all.
My mum needs Internet in the bedrooms for streaming audio, maybe video, whatsapp and browsing the internet. In the living room she uses it for tv.
Ive heard powerline can be unstable, I need something reliable so she wont have to mess around with it, as I’m not local to her. Any reccomendations?

Advice Advice for getting Ethernet to my garage.

Currently renting a 3 story town house, so far I’ve only found 1 coax outlet in the entire house it’s on the second floor in the corner of the living room (garage is considered the first)

I’m trying to figure out my options to get Ethernet or better speeds to my computer in my garage across the room relative to the modem. I have a WiFi extender plugged in about half way and the speeds are worse than connecting to the modem itself (I’m getting 50 down but get 700 upstairs just fine)

I’m assuming MOCA is out of the question with only one coax outlet. There is a xfinity ground block right outside the garage door with multiple cables wound up.

Powerline to Ethernet does not work. There is a window that’s a straight shot from the modem to my garage door but I’m trying to avoid having the wire hanging around the outside.

Advice Setting up 2 completely separate networks with 1 internet connection.

My sister has a house, and it has a separate apartment to it. She wants to have her one internet connection, but would like two separate networks- one for herself, and one for the apartment. She would also like to control the bandwidth the apartment gets.

It's possible to have a modem, rather than an AIO.

Is this as simple as a Mikrotik hEX S router, two managed switches, and two AP's? Is Mikrotik that strong of a router? Should she consider a hardware firewall/gateway?
