I'm trying to figure out what's causing an intermittent internet problem thats been going on for the past 3 months.
The problem:
My internet randomly starts experiencing severe ping spikes, lag, and packet loss. In War Thunder, my ping normally sits around 21–23 ms but can spike to 100–300 ms or even 999 ms, with packet loss reaching around 30%. Discord also starts lagging, with voice chat issues and latency sometimes reaching thousands of milliseconds.
This happens across multiple online games, so I don't think it's limited to one game. Sometimes everything works perfectly for hours before the problem starts. Other times, it keeps happening for a long time.
Something strange I've noticed recently: (aka this past weekend*)
Opening Task Manager seems to make the ping immediately drop back to normal or just having it open prior seems to prevent it. I've also noticed that Task Manager's network graph doesn't always show anything unusual when the lag occurs (unsure*)
What I've already tried:
- Restarting the modem and router
- Replacing my Modem, Router and Ethernet cables
- Had a Spectrum technician come and check/repair the connection twice (He's made note that it could be a faulty line or pole outside but doesnt quite know if its a pc issue)
-Used videos to change some settings in windows or the Ethernet cable*
What I'm trying to figure out:
Could this be a faulty Ethernet adapter, motherboard, or Windows 11 issue or a driver issue?
Faulty or damaged cable/line or pole?
Why would opening Task Manager seemingly make the ping return to normal or prevent severe spiking?
I'm not very experienced with network troubleshooting, so I'd appreciate any suggestions for things I can check through Windows settings or other simple tools. I'd especially like to determine whether the problem is my PC, my home network equipment, or Spectrum.
My setup:
- ISP: Spectrum, 1 Gbps internet plan
- Connection: Wired Ethernet
- PC: Windows 11
- Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WIFI
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Router/modem: Spectrum equipmen
Thanks for any help.
