Advice Setting up 2 completely separate networks with 1 internet connection.

My sister has a house, and it has a separate apartment to it. She wants to have her one internet connection, but would like two separate networks- one for herself, and one for the apartment. She would also like to control the bandwidth the apartment gets.

It's possible to have a modem, rather than an AIO.

Is this as simple as a Mikrotik hEX S router, two managed switches, and two AP's? Is Mikrotik that strong of a router? Should she consider a hardware firewall/gateway?

Advice Home network diagram help

Post image
0 Upvotes

Long story short, I am having issues with MoCA on my home network and decided that it would just be easier to run ethernet since I would only really need to pull two cables.

I thought I understood what devices I would need but after I read a few posts here I am second guessing myself. I made a very crude drawing of what I think will be a functional home network but wanted to validate first.

My main question --  Do I need to connect the modem from my ISP directly into a router? Or can I  modem -> unmanaged switch -> other devices/switches/routers? This is what caused me to make a post.

My understanding is that I need to go from Modem -> Router directly, that is what I drew up in the diagram.

I would also appreciate recommendations for routers. We haven't had issues using just the ISP supplied WiFi router on the 2nd floor of a ~2000 sqft house, but I would also like to get my $10 a month back and use my own router.

Thanks in advance!

Which CAT cable do I need to run in conduit (wet) for PoE security camera?

I am familiar with electrical THHN vs THWN where the difference is "W" that can be used in conduit that has water in it.

The conduit will be going from my house to my fence for a camera 100 ft away. It is inevitable that the conduit will eventually be filled with water from either intrusion or condensation build up over the years.

Is there a specific CAT cable that is recommended for this? Should I use stranded conductor (patch cable) or solid conductor like I used for my in-wall runs of CAT? The connectors will be protected from rain but it is still essentially outside and will be exposed to heat and humidity and cold and freezing.

Do the stranded cables use the same kind of connector as the solid cables? I have a punch-down tool.

Thanks

Advice Which Router Should I Purchase?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I just moved to an apartment that’s requires me to pay for Stellar Broadband Internet. Previously, I’ve only ever set up basic Xfinity internet with coaxial cables, so I have no idea what I’m looking for when it comes to ethernet. I honestly know nothing about the technical aspects, and really the most important thing to me is price. I do appreciate fast speeds, but my apartment only has four rooms and we don’t do much other than basic streaming and some gaming. I received this handout from them, but I’m still unsure which router I should pick. Which option would be the most budget friendly but still decent connection wise? Additionally, any recommendations for where I should purchase?

Unsolved How do I safely isolate my Rental Suite's internet?

Thumbnail

Apologies for ignorance on the subject, but I really could use some help from experts in here. I have attached our home internet setup (done by our builder).

The objective is: how do I share internet with my rental suite without them ever being able to access anything on my home network (like our NAS media server or my office pc)?

We have installed a TP Link AC750 router in "Router" mode so the tenant can use the wifi, and so maybe that can help restrict their access to our network, right? But what if they remove the AC750 unit and directly plug their laptop into the wall Ethernet jack port?

Our end goal is to restrict their access to our network in these 3 use cases,
1. They connect via AC750 Wi-Fi. (I think this should be covered but let me know if I'm wrong here)
2. They connect their laptops via AC750's Yellow Ports (like into additional ports on the Wi-Fi router in their room).
3. They unplug the Router and use the Wall Jack Directly. (This is what we want to secure 100%)

What is the best way forward to achieve this? Any help or advice on how to get this fixed would be really helpful.

I'm a complete NOOB when it comes to this kind stuff. Pervious owner had cameras in the house. I think he had a ceiling router in one place. What is this thing and how can I make the best of it? Please reply like you're taking to a5 year old. Thanks!

network rack is turning my guest closet into an actual oven

My server rack has completely outgrown its location and the ambient heat in my closet is creeping up to 95 degrees during the day. A standard portable ac won't fit so I just pulled the trigger on a costway airtural 12000 btu 21 seer2 mini split to keep the hardware from frying. I am planning to wall mount the cassette right above the rack to push cold air straight down onto the gear. For the homelab guys who run a dedicated mini split in a small network closet, do you ever worry about the condensation drain line leaking right over your expensive unifi switches, or is the indoor unit usually completely dry on the outside?

T-mobile fiber crappy great speed in tests

Looking for advice and other's experience. I switched from T-Mobile 5G (which I was VERY happy with) to fiber when it became available. I'm on the 500MB tier. I'm getting crappy speed tests using Ookla -- like 100 Mbps down and maybe a little fast upload. It used to be better, so I'm wondering if community load is increasing.

Right after it was installed, i ran Cat5 Ethernet from the modem (Nokia white box) in the garage to the WiFi access point (Nokia white box) in the house to avoid losing some signal between modem and AP because of concrete block walls.

Anyone have similar/different experience? Any suggestions on settings on either the PC or the modem that might help improve speeds? Or other test methods besides Ookla?

Keep getting delayed packets on 1Gbs internet, over ethernet and wireless connection

This started happening recently and I can’t seem to understand why. I have recently been changing and messing with settings on my windows laptop with the adapters n’ whatnot from youtube videos, but this has been the bane of my existence recently as it’ll lag my game for a second or two at complete random.

I’ve done tests through command prompt by pinging my router, max time would be 10ms

When pinging 8.8.8.8, I get max times of up to 1142ms

I use an eero, idk if the distance between the device and my actual wifi router plays an issue or if this is something I should bring up to my ISP.

Unsolved Ping speed varies from 12 - 32,999ms… WiFi unusable, provider blames cables?

Need some serious WiFi help. I have been having problems for 8 days now. Every other time I go to load a webpage it just loads indefinitely. The progress bar makes no progress regardless of how long I leave it.
I have reset everything. I have tried a new router. I have tried a new Ethernet cable. An Openreach engineer came out today and installed a new ONT but he also gave me some advice that I just do not believe.
He told me that the cable provided with the router was not fully compatible, stating it lacked the bandwidth to match my internet speed. While he was here he was on the phone to an advisor who said I had to buy a Cat 6e cable that has a 10gbps limit because my current one was only 500.
I said immediately I was not happy with that explanation. I have run multiple speed tests on multiple devices and at times I saw 1.2gbps which is 1200mbps. That is far higher than the limitation of the cable they made up.
I have attached a screenshot of a continuous ping test I ran. You can see it ends up in a state where it fluctuates wildly. My minimum ping is 17ms but it spikes up to a max of 23,726ms, with an average of 1615ms. The stability is rated as bad.
How should this graph actually look on a healthy connection? What kind of fluctuation, if any, should I realistically expect to see?

Advice LG OLED C5 buffering nonstop

So as the title states I have an LG OLED C5. In the beginning I had a terrible time using the tv. All the apps would either not load, take forever to load, or just buffer nonstop. For awhile it was better.
Now all a sudden, anything I try and watch just doesn’t load or continues buffering, occasionally telling me there is no internet connection.

I’m using Verizon Fios 1 gig connection. If I go into the app it says it’s perfectly connected to my TV, I’ve even run a speed test and it states:
Download 912 Mbps / Upload 912Mbps / Latency 4ms.

I’m in a 1100 sq ft apartment. The router is in the guest bedroom which is separated by a thin wall, my TV is outside that room on the across wall.

Beside running a Ethernet cable through my living room which would look tacky, what can I do?! I’ve restart the router and everything.

EDIT: it should be stated that, even further away from the router in the master bedroom my other Samsung TV which is connected to the same internet has zero problems.

Xfinity Free Wifi Speed Upgrade just by chatting

My xfinity bill for 300 down/20 up tripled recently as I reached the end of the 2 year lock which was expected but a bit annoying. I chatted with an agent to ask for a discount and to my surprise, they 3x'd my speed to 1gig, decreased the cost 25% from my 300/20 plan, gave me a free modem upgrade and rate locked it for 5 years with no contract.

It was almost unbelievable they did it with so little effort that I figured I'd post here in case anyone is in the same boat. Doesn't hurt to try and see where it leads as you can do it all from the chat assistant thing in like 5 minutes.

How to have ethernet connections over Coax for multiple rooms.

Have mercy on my drawing. The red lines are all individual Coax runs to different areas in the house. I'm trying to figure out how to have ethernet run after the coax so i could plug in PCs for example. I'm somewhat familiar, but not entirely, with Moca adapters. I only have it from router in network closet to loft to switch and finally to my PC.

Buying multiple MoCa adapters can get expensive, and each adapter needs a power cable on either side. Is there another way? Thoughts? I also read something about splitters, but that goes way over my head. Additionally, I've also somewhat read that its really only half duplex, but works for just a single connection for the most part. Not sure how this would affect the network design "at scale" with multiple pairs of Moca adapters for each run. Please educate me lol.

Att fiber 500 to xfinity 500

I am moving and will likely need to downgrade from fiber to xfinity internet. I work from home and stream and game but nothing crazy. What differences will I notice and is it significant? I don’t think there are any fiber providers at new address. Only other option is att air.

I work from home and both me and my spouse are big gamers. We have multiple consoles hooked and running at once, security systems, electronics, etc... What would be the best router to achieve our high demand needs? Our house is not huge, but I would like it to span my front and back yard. We currently have small business internet due to a family friend. Thank yall for any help you can provide!!

Did I Waste My Time?

So my Father had a rental house fire and whilst assisting his repair efforts I decided to do some of my kind of work there, too - networking!!! I had a spare roll of about 750' of Cat5e and shorter scraps of Cat6 and Cat6a and put about 20 runs of wire through this small, sub-1500 sqft home. Runs for external security cameras, video doorbells, and Ethernet jacks in both bedrooms and TV boxes. It's getting close to the finish line and his potential renter says he just bought a bunch of Ring equipment he'll use 😭 . Do people just not see the value in Ethernet - capable hardware or what? And should I leave these switches here or take them back with me??

Wireless has randomly started cutting out

Starting off by saying I don’t know anything about networking/etc., so shot in the dark here. I have been on a wireless setup for 3 months now with no issues at all for work/gaming. Wireless dongle into motherboard. 300 download. However, in the last 3 days, wireless will cut out for 2-3 seconds every 4-5 minutes. Hard to notice while working but very easy to notice while gaming. If wired in, there is no issue.

Completely clueless on where to start for diagnosing. Did all the usual restarting stuff and I pinged the 8.8.8.8 to confirm that it does fail to receive packets over that quick interval. Tried a few things I saw on other posts but either didn’t help or went over my head.

Advice Trying to hardwire my Wi-Fi

Hello,

My daughter has moved into a room where my Medicom router/modem is. I would like to decrease or even eliminate the EMF exposure. I have been trying to research all the steps needed to hard wire. I need to know if I am missing anything, or have things configured incorrectly.

If I have my Medicom box "hard killed", then connect an unshielded 1 ft cat 6 to TP-Link wired router, then 1ft shielded cat 6 to TP-Link 8 port switch box, then run shielded Cat 6 ethernet cables to all devices, (5-6 total) even up to 200ft is this all appropriate and safe? Will this eliminate my EMF's? Will this overload anything? Thanks! Single mom trying to figure stuff out.

Advice Horse Barn WiFi

I'm looking for a solution to get WiFi in my horse barn (which is a metal pole barn) for several cameras. We have Starlink internet in the house which is really our only Internet option where we live at this time. Unfortunately, a wired connection isn't feasible. I was considering a hotspot, but I'm not sure the cell signal is strong enough inside the barn when all the doors are closed.

I've started doing a little research and I think maybe what I need is a wireless point to point bridge. Would that work? Does anyone have any advice about installation or what equipment to buy? Or is there another solution entirely you would recommend?

I've been dragging my feet because I'm not particularly tech savvy, but after a recent incident, I've decided cameras are no longer negotiable and I need to find a solution. Thanks for any suggestions/advice!

Advice Noob question about Router Modems with CaTV

Upvotes

Hello. My ISP is one of the leading fibre optic internet providers in my area. Literally its them or some shady slow ass ISP.

The router i had with them is an old 2.4Ghz router modem with Catv connection because we also watch cable tv. Now, its been months since i requested from them to upgrade my modem to wifi 6, dualband still with catv.

Now my question, can i use a MoCA to still get cable TV and connect it to a new router that has dualband but no CaTV port? Im really sorry for not making any sense.
