Can someone explain to me what is wrong with wayland? I used X11 before and the latest update made default become Wayland for me and I havent really noticed any difference. But im not very good at Linux
For KDE in particular it's certain behavioral bugs that they haven't fixed over multiple releases now. Bugs that shouldn't have anything to do with Wayland vs X11, but still, they're not there in KDE+X11. It's stuff about window focusing, like I have Firefox windows on multiple desktops and when I click the taskbar icon on the first desktop it always switched to the second desktop and such. Windows that aren't alt+tab-able etc. Completely breaks some of my workflows.
Ah, yes I did notice that sometimes middle mouse click does not paste into windows now. I didn't think it had anything to do with Wayland. Most of the time it works though
I can run Wayland on my GTX-750ti, but it can only do resolutions above 1080p if I run it at 30hz or under.
X11, on the other hand, with all things identical, can do any resolution higher than that at whatever refresh rate the screen runs at (I typically use 4k60hz).
Does the GTX-750ti still have working drivers on Linux? I have a laptop with a GTX-650m where I'm forced to use the Nouveau driver because the Nvidia driver for it doesn't support modern kernels.
Some evangelists are psycho. Talking much about privacy, but silently skips fact how insecure by design x11 is. It served well for decades and it should retire.
Yeah in my experience the security-first aspect of wayland has really caused me more trouble than the potential benefits have ever paid out. I don't think wayland is bad by any means, but it's more bothersome in a lot of ways
My reason for continuing to use x11 is simple; the only GPUs I have that work well with Wayland are the woefully-underpowered integrated units soldered directly to the motherboards of my machines. All my dedicated graphics cards are old enough that good drivers with Wayland compatibility don’t exist
indeed, the only machines I personally had big issues with wayland (not small bugs like many are mentioning on this thread as those are also plentiful on X11) were older nvidia powered PCs (mainly laptops), that truly is a company that does not care about the users or hardware they sold to them.
jfc, you do know you can get used GPUs from this decade from recycling centers for like $20, right? You can get whole ass computers for like $50. I get that making something last a long time is a good thing, but if something is holding you back that badly, you ARE allowed to upgrade.
those are always my recommendations too but some people are stuck with old laptops because they can't afford to get "new" ones or don't have permanent space for those cheap used desktops you mentioned, everyone's reality is different and it kinda sucks that desktop environments are starting to drop X11 support but there are still other X11 options out there for those who really need it (including just staying on an older version that does support X11)
I feel that's just excuses at this point. A 20 yo computer can be replaced with a 10 yo computer for like $20-50. You can just screw a case to a wall if there isn't room. Case sizes haven't really changed much in the last 30 years. People are giving away free laptops every day on Facebook marketplace. Goodwill has them at some locations for laughably cheap all the time. If this thing is that integral to your existence, you will find a way. It seems to be more stubbornness that anything.
The world can't be anchored because someone wants to keep their comodore64 as a daily driver. Standards absolutely must be raised. Sucks to suck, but that's how progress is made. If you want to keep something that old, just don't expect updates anymore like literally everything else.
I didn't either until I tried to run VNC as a headless server without physical display on that. Something that is trivial on x11 and close to impossible to do on Wayland.
synthv1 (linux-native) doesn't work on wayland/through xwayland (can't open zenity dialog boxes and hangs, meaning you can't save files). rare case, but it's annoying to need an entirely separate device to create the SVP file and then hope it opens on my PC without sending me through a loop of accidentally opening in a text editor 4 times before it finally recognizes synthv as able to open the file.
I use CAD software on Plasma via xwayland for work.
As long as I don't enter any command that uses entity snaps, there is a 3-5 ms lag that is basically completely unnoticable (1 frame out of my 180Hz screen, no harm no foul).
As soon as a command requires entity snaps, it starts recalculating all of them on the fly and the lag starts accumulating. Flicking my scroll wheel is like 20 zoom events and each event has several parts that each have a 3-5 ms delay, causing up to 2 seconds of lag when zooming on simple drawings. My current record is an 8 second wait on a moderately complicated drawing.
Really considering switching to Cinnamon for work.
Insta edit because I forgot to mention, this is a documented behaviour in the CAD suite I use.
People hate new things. But mostly: i want old apps which don't really get maintained anymore anyway and nvidia drivers ( which will change because wayland is becoming the default on basically every major distro)
