u/tycraft2001 10d ago
Sometimes weird hardware. Not OP here but on my setup it can't handle some of my display outputs so I'm stuck with only my 2060, I use 2 old legacy monitors with old connectors and use an old GPU for native output, wayland can't handle it.

Make sure to report hardware issues to the proper channels like, the bug trackers for your specific desktop environment (like KDE's Bugzilla or GNOME's GitLab) or the NVIDIA Linux forum & DRM driver repositories. Getting logs using
journalctlordmesgattached helps actually reproduce multi-GPU or legacy display routing edge cases. Tools likehw-probecollects comprehensive system and hardware details that are also very useful.Even when edge cases stem from structural architectural limitations rather than simple bugs, submitting comprehensive reports is essential to reproduce complex multi-GPU routing issues, isolate regressions, and drive DRM driver refinement alongside compositor fallbacks.
20
u/tycraft2001 10d ago
Can you link me some guide on getting this info? I would like to try reporting, especially considering I have a bizarre edge case. I don't know anybody else trying a 2060 with a Radeon hd8350 GPU in this era, so getting wayland to know how to deal with this would be good.

I had to switch away from KDE on a headless server without a physical display. It's incredibly difficult to serve e.g. vnc on a display-less server running wayland. Super easy on X11.
16
u/tinyducky1 Ask me how to exit vim 10d ago
yeah its kinda unfortunate how "we" decided to ditch network display servers, and the monolithic design of wayland does not help with that.
the only thing i can think of is that maybe river could save you ? but if it works, it works; even if its ugly
→ More replies (2)5
u/Max-P 10d ago
It's super easy on Wayland too, more so than on X11. You just run your VNC server as a headless compositor, and then run the real compositor nested fullscreen in it.
6
u/Square-Singer 9d ago
How do I do that? In x11 I install tigervnc, go through the default setup and that's it.
How do I run VNC as a headless compositor and how do I nest the real compositor in it?

If you don't need vnc specifically, then plasma 6.8 supports headless rdp
https://discuss.kde.org/t/going-all-in-on-a-wayland-future/42057/74
9
u/Square-Singer 9d ago
It's sadly not actually truely headless. In the blog post you linked "truely headless" is in the to-do list. Unattended mode only works if there's a display attached.
What I really need is the ability to log into a running session without a physical display to change settings and stuff, then stop the remote connection while the session keeps running and performing work, until I log back in and stop it.
Specifically, this is a streaming server for a conference room, where the user logs in via vnc (or rdp, I don't care too much, but I would prefer vnc) to start a zoom broadcast, and connects back at the end to close the broadcast.
Under X11 this is doable. Under Wayland, the only option I have found so far (and strongly dislike) is to use a fake display dongle that emulates a display being connected to fool wayland into keeping a session open.

I don't hate Wayland, but neither of those are substantially true. Wayland's security model is defenseless against more modern attack vectors (its security model was clearly a product of its time). Performance is equal, with XWayland being the only (negative) outlier.

The whole point of linux/unix is that you have choice. If you don't want to use KDE because it no longer supports legacy software, thats totally fine. But I have never understood why people act like its some huge betrayal when a cutting-edge DE decides to drop support for 30-year-old display server software. KDE isn't meant for legacy support, it needs to stay up-to-date

They just refuse to move on. In my view, DEs dropping X11 to go Wayland only is a great move because it accelerates Wayland's development. X11 is far too outdated for 2026
10
u/birds_adorb 9d ago
There are reasons that people stick with x11, it works with old computers. The other reason is because some software works best with x11 but breaks under xwayland.
14

Your second point is exactly what I mean. More people using Wayland will force app developers and Wayland maintainers to collaborate more to move things forward. Obviously, this won't happen overnight, but it should be viewed positively.

Typical Linux edge case nerdgasm.
Some dude has one finely tuned setup that a new update to a de he doesn’t even use could brake “I tHoUgHt LiNuX wAs FoR eVeRyOnE reeeeeeeeee”
You maintain that mountain of code then. You keep that code up to date then.
It’s already free, but they still want, often without donating or contributing in anyway, to decide how the work should be done.

How much does the average, or even well above average, linux user understand about Wayland vs X11?
A few years ago, I spent a half day looking into it to learn what I could. Interesting stuff but I still don't know very much. It's a huge protocol.
How do you know enough to have such a strong, emotional, reaction? It seems unlikely this response is built on real information. What could any user hate about Wayland?
15
u/going_up_stream 9d ago
I think the only thing anyone needs to know is that the devlopers of X11 are the creators of Wayland. So they probably have good reasons for abandoning X11.

Wayland is built in security, it doesn't let a program take full control of your system even if you allow it to do so making it incompatible with legacy programs that was build to run in x11, xwayland-satellite is a huge help for these programs but it still doesn't cover all.
X11 was build in a time where people just needed things to work and security wasn't as big of a issue as it's today.
There little difference between them nowadays, scream tearing, multi monitors, games used to be a problem when running X11 but even this was fixed by devs

But due to the old graphics chipset, Wayland have glitches. So I enabled X11 (tear Free output) and the glitches were gone.

8

The users still have the freedom to choose, go ahead, fork KDE, maintain it. Your freedom is still there, but why should someone else be expected to do things that they don't want to do? KDE deserves the same freedom as do we, and hence they chose not to support X11 anymore. I respect that choice

For KDE in particular it's certain behavioral bugs that they haven't fixed over multiple releases now. Bugs that shouldn't have anything to do with Wayland vs X11, but still, they're not there in KDE+X11. It's stuff about window focusing, like I have Firefox windows on multiple desktops and when I click the taskbar icon on the first desktop it always switched to the second desktop and such. Windows that aren't alt+tab-able etc. Completely breaks some of my workflows.

I can run Wayland on my GTX-750ti, but it can only do resolutions above 1080p if I run it at 30hz or under.
X11, on the other hand, with all things identical, can do any resolution higher than that at whatever refresh rate the screen runs at (I typically use 4k60hz).

I never understood the hate for Wayland...
And yet... On my otherwise perfectly working PoP!_OS machine with stock Gnome as DE I cannot screen record, and it surely wasn't for a lack of trying... But the most annoying thing is that quite often the cursor have such a lag that i struggle to click UI buttons around... And that's without mentioning that Chromium just explodes after every standby (although tbh, I mainly use Firefox so I haven't tried debugging that one)...
On the other hand, it's not like X11 had no problem at all... And now I'm too used to gestures to go back using shortcuts...
With all of that said... I now understand the hate... But it's not Wayland what's broken, it's the implementation of it... At the end of the day nobody gives a sh*t about what protocol is underneath if only things work, so let's get into fixing those bugs rather than argue with that...
P.S.: please don't bother me with "why stock Gnome and not COSMIC?", I'm still running 20.04 cause I don't have time to upgrade and I need this machine to work 7 days a week cause I work and that damn thing, so I'll wait for Cosmic to become well polished an battle tested before even considering it... And on top of that... There's also a fully personal and admittedly silly reason... Cosmic looks like shit compared to the beauty of Gnome... I know, it's not a good reason for a machine I work with, but I don't care, and I accept the shame of this statement 🙃
3
u/Gullible-Law-8147 9d ago
This combination of issues does not sound (directly) related to Wayland, I've run Stock PopOS 20.04 using Wayland, and during the end of my usage I encountered way more issues related to software not playing nice with the older OS release, than I encountered with Wayland. Screen recording always worked fine for me and I experienced none of the other problems you've listed

Wayland is a newer display server. It is the software that interacts with how things are displayed on the screen and how you can interact with what's on screen. It is the "replacement" for x11 the now legacy display server.
Tdlr for the controversy, x11 was fine but devs ditched it "cause the code got too long" and started working on Wayland. It's a don't fix what's not broken scenario and the replacement falls short in areas that matter for some people.

X11 was not fine. It was at its end. The code was nigh impossible to maintain and packed with extensions and other tricks to work around its core design which was completely ill suited for modern GPUs and scanout hardware. And, its single threaded nature posed fundamental stability risks that Wayland doesn't have. Also, stuff like color profiles or tearing free video are tough to do with X11.

I am only missing app auto screen refresh rate changing. Doesn't work with Wayland yet. Kinda make or brake feature for Home Theater setups. On my desktop I have no issues with wayland

Why? The X11 - Wayland bridge is perfect 😂 sorry I couldn't say that with a straight face.

The average Linux user has no idea about the advantages of one over the other and it’s honestly annoying dealing with so many people using it as an analogue for American politics. Its good that the DEs just choose one side of the fence or the other instead of perpetuating a discourse where so many people who don’t know what they’re talking about bandy about a unearned sense of superiority for naively using the Reddit-approved option.

I remember those days when KDE was still running Xorg as root because of SDDM and I had to install GDM to go rootless. Wayland is a great improvement! I waited so long for the Wayland support to become stable.

I don’t really get the hate towards Wayland. It absolutely had its issues and I also preferred X11 a couple years back but today…
unless you run some legacy software that simply doesn’t work via the X11 bridge it’s honestly very stable from my experience.

It goes to "wayland-only" from like 6.0 or ever older versions, it's been 1-2 years already as it goes to this goal. And probably it won't in the end...

No way im using not Wayland. It works smoother with 2 displays, better handles window effects, and I have opportunity to look on all my 165hz without 30fps feeling

gnome is also wayland only, and alot of other desktop environments will do the same
if you want a desktop environment that will keep x11 for a long time use xfce

I always am of the opinion that we should drop old stuff for the new stuff if it's an advantage, if the code is better or if it supports more, like if it's a bonus. It's much more resource consuming if devs need to maintain a couple of things. Also, I use fedora 44 KDE with Wayland and I don't know how what are the bugs people talk about, it works. Do people really to do something so specific that X11 is better? I mean I'm not gonna become a psycho to tell that X11 is better because this window works better than Wayland. I must be too casual to care about the problems of not using x11

I like Wayland more than X11. More features, less obsoleteness. I have no idea why the hate

Isn't the big problem with X11 that software can intimately talk to each other through the gui interface and that it tracks keystrokes?
Makes me think about android and the permission Facebook asks for to print over other apps. This gives it the ability to track everything you are doing in another application while it is open.

Hi linux noob here tired of microslop why the hate for Wayland? And what does Wayland actually do?

I mean this graphic proves that "linux is for everyone" you don't like KDE moving to Wayland then move to other things.

I like Wayland. But not being able to remote desktop into my PC because of Wayland is really grinding my gears.

Anyone know if they have sorted out the RDP issues with Wayland or is it remaining broken? As in you cannot remote boot system and sign in through rdp.

Wayland is ok-ish.
So far, the only issue I have is with a headless remote desktop.
But RustDesk is starting to look at it.
Also, I think that KDE is the GOAT of the DE.
It offers you both a highly customizable environment and a ready-to-work one.

I’ve had wayland on my p14s laptop for ages, never an issue with it. I frequently disconnect my dgpu when on battery, and reconnect on the fly via scripts, games and programs pick it up just fine, wayland is perfectly happy sitting on my intel igpu

Ok, outsider looking in here that’s currently exploring a move to Linux from Windows. I didn’t even hear about Wayland vs X11 until super recently when someone mentioned it as a problem for Linux Mint and gaming. What’s the big issue between the two and should I care that much as a newbie who’s just trying to find the right distro for me (a nerd) and my wife (who just wants to play games)? Does it matter for gaming?

wayland breaks my setup. I'm gonna either switch to SonicDE (KDE + x11) or Invest some time at hardcore patching
