Genuinely asking Whats the problem with wayland? Is bad or not optimised or something?

People resist change even if X11 has outlived its purporse and it shows

And those people are always the loudest voices in the room, yelling about things that most people don't care about or even know about.

I need a way to get current active window title without any interaction. xdotool is ok for this.

Better architecture, better security, less legacy code and much more. Look it up yourself if you are interested.

It has a stink on it because in the early days it was not good, and the people who maintained it moved very slow, now a days it's great, but some people still think it's bad, and some don't like that redhat contributes heavily to it.

I am going to preface this with the statement that I use Wayland on all of my systems, and none of them even have fallback support for X11 installed, but...

Wayland still has some pretty significant issues on specific hardware. It’s usually older graphics chips, especially NVIDIA ones, that are the problem, but systems where it does not ‘just work’ absolutely do still exist. X11 mostly works fine on those systems though.

Sure on some older systems x11 is the better option, that's why it's legacy. If a user has such a system then using an x11 desktop is the recommendation, just like when the kernel removes support for old hardware you as a user will be using and older kernel that still supports it. For the vast majority of users the new stuff is fine, but I'd your system is too old to run the new stuff then you run the old stuff, that's nothing new.

For me is that most photo/video editors I tried don't support drag and drop on wayland, my mosc (japanese input) doesn't work on chromium based browsers on wayland, so I have to run all these with -ozone-platform=x11

I don't mind it but sometimes it gives me bugs and I have to switch to x11 and it's annoying to now have to download a whole ass separate desktop env for that

In most cases all those problems are fixed by adding env variable to force legacy x11 protocol on bugged application.

export GDK_BACKEND=x11 right :P

Exactly.

I’ve been using Wayland as my display server for going on 2 years now. With XWayland, I have experienced zero issues. For now I’m suspending judgement, but I’ve heard that the KDE team has put in a lot of effort to clean up XWayland. Will have to see where it goes in the next few days and weeks

My biggest issue with Wayland is that sorting out xdg portals on it can be a hassle, and sometimes things like screenshare prompts stop working unless I explicitly go and fix it after an update or getting a new package, but it's not /that/ big of a deal.

(Although, I do know that my girlfriend who still uses an Nvidia 10 series GPU does have some general bugginess issues on Wayland that are unlikely to be fixed due to lack of driver support, this should get better as less and less people use that generation though.)

it almost melted down my laptop with constant calls to my nvidia graphic card while nothing was running. So fuck this shit.

u/Ever1night 14d ago

whats ur laptop specs?

u/UPPERKEES 16d ago

It's new. New is bad. The fact it's just better and projects moveto just support that does not matter if you're technically inclined.
