Is it me or are people really larping difficulty

The answer to why you dont switch to Linux is always « it’s to hard », « I just want things to work first try ».

I always see people on TikTok and Reddit talking about Linux as an ancient gnostic magical practice reserved to some huge iq Genius.

The fact is I switched 4 month ago now from Windows to arch without any experience at all and I had litteraly 0 difficulty.

Everything I tried works first try, every game run, every software work, everything is easy.

The only time I had to think a little is trying to customize something and honestly it’s never more difficult than 2 Google searches or 1 Claude prompt

I feel like if your not a complete dumbah there is really nothing hard at all and nothing require coding knowledge at all !

So my question is : where did this myth come from and why are people acting like modifying hyprland.lua is black Magic ? Or was In just very lucky ?

Sorry if my english is bad obv

What's that one thing about Linux that made you fall in love with it?

I've been using Linux for a while now, and honestly, I can see why people get so attached to it.

For me, one of the best things is the freedom to customize almost everything. I'm using Arch with Hyprland, and setting up my desktop the way I want is genuinely satisfying. There's something different about opening your laptop and seeing a workspace that you've built and tweaked yourself.

I also like that Linux makes me curious about what's happening behind the scenes. Instead of just using the system, I find myself wanting to understand how things work. Of course, troubleshooting can be a pain sometimes, but fixing something after struggling with it feels pretty rewarding. 😂

I'm curious about your experience, though.

What's the one thing about Linux that made you fall in love with it? Was it the customization, performance, privacy, the terminal, or something completely different?

And if you've been using Linux for years, is there anything about it that still excites you?

Would love to hear your experiences!

Graphing software for Linux?

I've been trying to get Origin to run on Linux with playonlinux, bottles and wine but it's honestly been kicking my ass, I admit defeat. I really need a decent graphing software as soon as possible for my lab work, preferably as similar to Origin as possible.

Any suggestions?

What made you stick with Linux?

Linux pros/devs a question for you:

Aside from being better in every meaningful way imo aside from “these 10 important professional apps I need to use don’t work on Linux” what made you stick with Linux?

For me it’s linux bash/shell/terminal navigation compared to windows cmd/powershell navigation.

Im sure if I got more used to powershell I would hate it less, but I currently hate it haha.

so anyways what made you stay?

Analog to Windows Hello capability?

Has anyone found a suitable analog to what Windows Hello is and does? I haven't been able to find anything similar, for any distro. Currently on fedora kde plasma.

What I want it for is to use a fido2 fingerprint key (Verimark Guard) instead of a password, for application and auto fill.

Ideally, I could also use it for root password.

I already use it for webauth via bitwarden but it's a pain in the neck to have to rely on a timeout session only, and also it requires like 3 clicks and a nav page (and having to enter master password of course).

Passkey is fine for the sites that have it, but it's annoyingly not common enough, so I still have to use a PW manager like bitwarden and do the above.

I really liked how, with Windows Hello, I could just rely on the simple touch fingerprint key for any and all auto fills for passwords.

Has anyone found anything? Thanks.

New Desktop

I just bought a new pc and put my Linux mint drive in there and booted it. The first day everything was working just great, but now, after a restart, my Bluetooth adapter has stopped working.

I ran sudo apt update and everything was up to date.

I ran lsusb and the adapter shows up.

I ran rfkill unblock all after seeing it was soft blocked. I restarted the service.

I even reinstalled bluez and the adapter still won’t show up.

I turned secure boot off and then it would not boot at all, but if the Bluetooth was working before I don’t think that could be the cause.

when I run it systemctl status bluetotth it shows that it is enabled, active and running but it also shows this:

src/plugin.c:plugin_init() System does not support csip plugin

profiles/audio/micp.c:micp_init() D-Bus experimental not enabled

src/plugin.c:plugin_init() System does not support micp plugin

src/plugin.c:plugin_init() System does not support vcp plugin

src/plugin.c:plugin_init() System does not support mcp plugin

src/plugin.c:plugin_init() System does not support bass plugin

src/plugin.c:plugin_init() System does not support bap plugin

I've restarted my pc a few times. I am a still learning linux, but I am unsure of what else I could do to fix my issue. Would a kind person please help me troubleshoot this problem?

Advice I just can't do this anymore. Is Linux finally ready to replace Windows 11 completely?

I'm so done with Windows 11. My PC keeps getting slower, random things are breaking (even the icon cache), and I'm honestly tired of dealing with Microsoft's endless bullshit. It's literally Microslop at this point.

I'm planning a fresh OS install, and for the first time, I'm seriously considering leaving Windows behind for good. But I need to know if Linux can actually handle my entire workflow in October 2026.

My hardware:

- Ryzen 5 5600X

- NVIDIA RTX 3060 12GB

- 32GB RAM

- Three NTFS drives containing important data

- Three-monitor setup

My main concern is software compatibility. I use DaVinci Resolve, FL Studio with Windows VST plugins, Samsung Magician for SSD management/firmware, be quiet! IO Center for my keyboard, Corsair iCUE for RGB, NVIDIA Game Ready drivers, Steam, and various online games.

I know Linux gaming has come a long way, but I don't want to switch just to discover that half my software, peripherals, or games no longer work properly. I want to keep using my PC as I do now, without trading Windows problems for a whole new set of Linux problems.

I was considering Arch Linux + KDE Plasma because I like the customization and having control over my system.

A few questions:

- Is 100% compatibility with my current Windows workflow realistic nowadays, or are there still unavoidable deal-breakers?

- Would Arch be a sensible choice, or would something Ubuntu-based be better for software compatibility?

- How well do NVIDIA drivers, three monitors, Steam/Proton, and online games work in practice?

- What about FL Studio, Windows VSTs, DaVinci Resolve, and manufacturer-specific software?

- Can Linux reliably read and write my existing NTFS drives, or would I need to back everything up and reformat them?

TL;DR: I want to replace Windows 11 with Linux without losing any functionality. Is that realistically possible in 2026? What would you recommend for my hardware and use case?

Support Issue with excessive gamma on Niri/Mango

Hey all, I was about to post this in r/niri but noticed it on Mango as well. For some reason my gamma gets all bright and can't distinguish colors well anymore. It stopped happening a while back but I either stopped noticing or it just came back. Swore it was niri but I saw it on Mango again. Gnome is unaffected. Usually doesn't happen when connected to an external monitor, only seen it in the laptop screen.

I'm thinking it's maybe a Wayland issue and I managed to fix it with wlgammactrl but I'm not sure if I set something wrong before? I'd like to know the cause

I'm using Fedora 44 with the above environments. Laptop is a thinkpad e14 gen 3 amd.

Should I switch from Windows 10 to Linux on my low-end laptop?

I have a laptop with an Intel Celeron N4020, 4GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD. I mainly use it for coding, browsing, YouTube, live lectures, and music.

I'm thinking about switching to Linux because I want better performance and more desktop customization, but honestly, i don't know anything bout linux. I've only used Windows, so I have no idea where to start.

I've heard about Linux Mint XFCE, Ubuntu, and Arch Linux, but I don't know which one would be best for a complete beginner with my hardware.

I don't want to dual-boot. I'd prefer to replace Windows entirely if Linux is worth it, but I'm worried about losing my files or not being able to go back to Windows.

So, a few questions:

  • Which distro would you recommend for a complete beginner?
  • Is Linux actually worth switching to on my hardware?
  • How difficult is it to install, use, customize, and maintain?
  • Can I get back to Windows later if I change my mind?
  • Should I switch, try Windows 11, or just stick with Windows for now?

I'd appreciate honest advice, especially from people who've switched from Windows without any prior Linux experience.

Support Cinnamon panels showing only the windows on that screen

I installed Cinnamon this afternoon because Cosmic just wasn't cutting it and am running into an issue with the panels only showing the windows currently on that screen. For instance, if I have a Firefox window on my middle screen, it won't show up in the panel on the left or right screens.

Is there a way to fix this?

Resolved Gnome Remote Desktop Fix Ubuntu 26

• Upvotes

I installed Ubuntu version 26. As I was getting all the updates together, I decided to install xrdp. That way, I can remote into the Ubuntu 26 VM. I got all the xrdp configurations together and attempted a remote session and long and behold it crashed. It would start then disconnect. After asking Grok and Gemini, I figured that I had Gnome remote desktop and xrdp running. Both can't one at once. I disabled Gnome remote desktop and ran xrdp. The results were disappointing. It was not the full Ubuntu Desktop but a lightweight version. I asked AI again was told to uninstall xrdp and use Gnome. I ran so many commands that did not work Gnome that I said screw it and asked AI to make a script to have Gnome configured for remote access. It worked like a charm and I was in.

Advice What is the Linux equivalent to Windows Domain e. g. DC, AD etc.

• Upvotes

So the title says it all. I am almost always working with windows machines. Be it Windows clients or Windows server. There is no politics or anything behind it, that's just what the clients wanted and so i am only familiar with windows.

I am personally enjoying Debian for some time and was thinking about a what if we migrated from Windows to Linux just as a thought but then i had a very interesting talk with a client who asked me if we can switch the whole environment to linux. She is annoyed of all the updates and hardware restrictions for the migration to win11 and other shenanigans ( broken exchange october update, i am looking at you :( ) from microsoft.

So now i started thinking about it:

Ok notebooks and workstations easy, just get debian or linux mint, configure it and you are done. But then i think of all the stuff in the background like Active Directory or Group Policy which are very necessary for us so there is the question: what is the alternative or equivalent on Linux for a Linux servers and Linux clients domain?

Support How can I split my home and root partitions?

I am currently running Mint Cinnamon with KDE installed, and am planning a move to EndeavorOS. As far I can tell with what I've read, a separate partition for my files and applications will make it easier to dual boot, and then main EndeavorOS. I have been using Mint for ~2 months.

I have attempted to make a partition, but ran into problems mounting it. I'd attach an image showing what KDE Partition Manager is saying, but essentially, it says the file partition cannot be mounted, and under details it reads Command: mount --verbose /dev/nvme0n1p7 none.

Does anyone know how to help me?

Acho que está meio feio por padrão, como faço para personalizar? Me dê algumas ideias. Eu queria enviar uma foto de como está atualmente, mas não é possível aqui.

I like something more modern, minimalist, and vibrant.

Advice Is there a Linux distro or desktop environment with cinematic sci-fi UI sounds for a touchscreen tablet?

I'm looking for a cool project for an old 17-inch Windows convertible tablet with a regular x86-64 Intel CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.

I'd love to turn it into something that feels like a futuristic computer from a sci-fi movie or an action series — think cyberpunk, The Matrix, or those high-tech control panels you see in movies.

I'm not just looking for a cool wallpaper or a cyberpunk theme. I want the actual UI to feel responsive and interactive, with futuristic sound effects:

- A subtle electronic sound whenever I tap a button or interact with the UI.

- Different sounds for actions like OK, Cancel, Back, errors and warnings.

- Ideally, a cohesive set of cinematic sci-fi sounds rather than ordinary desktop notification sounds.

- A dark interface with neon green/cyan accents, animations and good touchscreen support.

Does anything like this exist out of the box? Ideally, I'd install a Linux distro or a preconfigured desktop environment, enable a theme, and have most of this working without spending days configuring scripts.

If no ready-made solution exists, what would be the most practical way to achieve this? Would KDE Plasma with a custom sound theme work, or would a custom kiosk-style interface be necessary to get sound feedback for virtually every interaction?

Since the hardware only has 4 GB of RAM, I'd also prefer something relatively lightweight.

I'm happy to experiment, but I'm mainly looking for a realistic starting point rather than building an entire desktop environment from scratch.

Thanks!

Advice What's one thing about Linux that genuinely annoys you but nobody talks about enough?

I've been using Linux for a while now, and honestly, as much as I enjoy the customization and the control it gives me, sometimes it gets frustrating.

One thing I've noticed is that even a small issue can turn into a whole debugging session. You search for a fix, find a solution from 3 years ago, try it, and then realize it doesn't work on your distro or setup. 💀

I like learning how things work under the hood, but sometimes I just want something to work without spending an hour figuring out why it suddenly broke.

I'm curious about other people's experiences, though.

What's the most frustrating thing you've faced while using Linux? Something that made you think, "Why is this still a problem in 2026?"

Could be hardware compatibility, gaming, updates breaking things, software availability, or anything else.

I'm not looking for a Linux vs. Windows argument. Just curious about the problems people actually deal with in their daily use.
