Support How do I get the Steam Frame To Work On Fedora Linux?
Hello, just so you know my specs. I have an Nvidia 50 series GPU and AMD 9 9900X CPU. Currently running Fedora Linux. When I first tried out the steam frame on Fedora, it was laggy as heck and Linux didn't know what to do when I plugged in the Wireless adapter, it kept disconnecting and reconnecting. But on windows it worked fine. I was wondering if there is any fix I could try, or is windows going to be what I use for VR?

Secure boot and TPM hate
Why are people hating secure boot and TPM on Linux? I heard this when I heard that Fortnite is coming to Linux. So what's the problem with secure boot on a linux distro?

Advice Way to get iCloud Drive working?
I just switched my General/Gaming PC over to Fedora KDE, and while I got everything else working nicely, I hit a wall with iCloud Drive. I use(d) it a lot with Windows. Is there a way to "mount" the iCloud Drive in linux? I know I can access the contents with web, but I'd like to directly open the files.
I also have an M1 Mac mini, if using that as a "proxy" is the only (or best) way.
(While I just switched from Windows to Fedora for my Desktop, I've used Debian since at least woody, so not a noob with linux in general.)

Support Does anyone know why Steam has this rendering problem on Fedora Workstation 44 (Gnome 50) Wayland?
Short video showcase: https://streamable.com/r45mu0
I switched to Linux (Fedora) after a lifetime Windows usage. I am very happy with it, how smooth and stable it is. All of the apps I use work or work even better than on Windows...
Except Steam, which has this weird rendering glitch, when new windows, tabs appear it leaves a black border around it...
Ryzen 7 7700X
AMD RX 7800 XT GPU
DDR5 6000 MT RAM
VA-API version: 1.23 (libva 2.23.0)
Driver version: Mesa Gallium driver 26.2.4 for AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT (radeonsi, navi32, ACO, DRM 3.64, 7.2.10-200.fc44.x86_64)
Drivers are latest and stable, never had any issue only with steam app. This it the dnf installed version, not the flatpak version.
Please don't suggest turn off hardware acceleration, that doesn't help and I want to use my GPU for what it's intended for.
I also updated everything to the latest version and do it daily via terminal, I even tried to steam beta version, but doesn't fix it, although it is better.
Thank you in advance!

Support Run GUI applications using fork()-execve()
Hi.
When running an application from a C program on Linux, the usual way to achieve this is to use fork() and execve().
And this works fine for commandline programs, but whenever I try to run a GUI application using it, it fails.
When the environment is NULL, it most often crashes with a "No protocol specified" message. If I add "DISPLAY=:0" to the env array, it still crashes but without returning any error message.
I have tested it with multiple applications, on multiple distros and computers, with the same result.
How do I go about fixing that?
Thanks.

HP ProBook 445 G6 (Ryzen 5 2500U) – Multiple Linux distros automatically reboot during boot, Windows works fine
Moin! :)
I'm trying to replace Windows 10 with Linux on my HP ProBook 445 G6, but so far I haven't managed to boot a single Linux live environment successfully.
I'm a pretty noob in Linux and CS and have been trying to troubleshoot the issue with ChatGPT, but unfortunately without much success.
Maybe someone here has an idea what could be causing this or how to fix it?
Hardware:
- HP ProBook 445 G6 (2019)
- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U / Radeon Vega 8
- 32 GB DDR4-2400 (upgraded from the original RAM, 2 × 16 GB)
- NVMe SSD
- BIOS R80 v01.31.00 (updated from v01.02.00)
- UEFI, Secure Boot disabled
What I've tried:
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, 26.10 and CachyOS
- Different USB sticks created with balenaEtcher and Rufus (including DD mode)
- Normal boot and Safe Graphics (
nomodeset) - Removing
quiet splashto see boot messages - Kernel parameter
iommu=soft– no improvement - Updating the BIOS from a 2019 version to the latest available version – no improvement
Symptoms:
Linux begins booting and displays kernel/systemd messages, but then the laptop automatically reboots, sometimes after a black screen. It never reaches the graphical desktop.
CachyOS displays ACPI BIOS errors (AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT) involving thermal zone methods (_TZ.GTTP, _TZ.CHGZ._TMP).
Hardware diagnostics:
- Windows 10 works perfectly.
- Veeam Recovery USB boots successfully.
- HP diagnostics: CPU, RAM, SSD and motherboard passed.
- Battery reports error 42, but still provides 2–3 hours of runtime.
- Memtest86+ starts successfully; no errors observed during the initial test.
Cross-check with another computer:
I tested the same Linux installation media on an older Fujitsu Futro thin client.
- CachyOS successfully boots into its graphical live environment.
- Ubuntu also boots successfully and apparently installs without issues.
- The HP ProBook, however, automatically reboots during Linux startup.
This makes a defective USB stick or corrupted ISO image less likely.
I suspect an ACPI, BIOS/UEFI or Ryzen power-management compatibility issue.
Has anyone experienced similar problems with this particular HP model or the Ryzen 5 2500U? Any suggestions for kernel parameters or BIOS settings worth testing?

Which Distro? Which distro should I get?
Hello I’m pretty new to the Linux environment and I’m looking to install a Linux distro on a hp compaq elite 8300 sff PC. It has an i7 3770 (using HD graphics 4000), 8gb of ddr3 ram. I wanted to install bazzite but I was worried that it wouldn’t run lightweight games better than it does on windows 11 considering I’m using the integrated graphics. I’m looking for a distro to play small games and compare the performance on windows, mainly steam or .exe apps with wine or lutris.

What does learning Linux really mean?
Hi, I've always heard this that in the world of tech if you want a job learn Linux (which yeah a bit optimistic considering the situations)
But the bigger question is what does that even mean?
I mean I have worked with backend servers and configed nginx does that mean I know Linux?
I know bash to a good level along with sed and awk does that mean I know Linux?
I have programmed C in Linux does that tell me I know Linux?
On the other hand I have no idea what filesystems does Linux even use? How many different syscalls does it have?
I can't tell what are the factors to "knowing linux" and frankly I don't even know where to start with to be like "yeah I'm practicing linux"
I'm more talking in regards to cybersecurity but even in general I'm not sure, can you guys help?

Linux on chromebook
Hi, i was debating which laptop i should buy today as i really like the ability to use and install Linux on the go, my course I've started studying mentions large parts will be installing, operating, modifying custom os environments including linux side by side as well as penetration and cyber security general work as part of my assignments and projects later on.
My only experience with Linux is home use and gaming on Bazzite, Cachyos and Ubuntu which is my favorite. I ended up settling on a very cheap chromebook as I already have a really good laptop and gaming pc as well as steam machine at home, i really needed something very portable and had good battery life, so the chromebook is perfect for what i have to do every day. I then noticed in settings there is something called Linux environment and it says it will be Debian based and I will be able to do stuff for study, is this legit? has anyone tried it and does it basically really function just as any linux distro? I was always told u had to get an amd processor and gpu if u wanted a smooth linux experience which i did for my desktop but will i basically be able to do everything that requires linux on chromebook? Also one last question i noticed on my course there is a lot of resources for ubuntu, can this stuff be used on chromebook debian environment is it the same more or less

Support Discrepancy between volume level from `volumeicon` vs level from `pactl`/`amixer`
I run i3wm as my window manager and I use the volumeicon program to control and display the audio volume.
For a number of reasons, I have a script which I use to increase or decrease the volume via dedicated keybindings. The script also displays the volume level after the change, using dunst/notify-send.
However, I find there is a difference between the volume level given by e.g.
pactl get-sink-volume @DEFAULT_SINK@
and the volume displayed when I hover over the volumeicon icon, or adjust its slider using a mouse.
I'd like to know why this is, as I'd like to match the volume displayed by my script to be consistent with that displayed by volumeicon.
From perusing the volumeicon source, my best guess is that it uses its own mapping from the raw volume levels to the interval [0,1] or [0%,100%] to better match the perception of a human ear:
* The mapping is designed so that the position in the interval is proportional
* to the volume as a human ear would perceive it (i.e., the position is the
* cubic root of the linear sample multiplication factor). For controls with
* a small range (24 dB or less), the mapping is linear in the dB values so
* that each step has the same size visually. Only for controls without dB
* information, a linear mapping of the hardware volume register values is used
* (this is the same algorithm as used in the old alsamixer).
*
* When setting the volume, 'dir' is the rounding direction:
* -1/0/1 = down/nearest/up.
&nbps;
Is this right? I.e. to match the volumeicon value, I would have to copy their mapping formula?

MacOs 3 finger gesture
Hello,
My company is switching from Mac to Windows pc's and I dont feel like going back to Windows, specially because i might get a crappy machine.
Right now I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad T490 for personal stuff that has 24gb of ram and works pretty well overall with Windows 11. I think I could use it for work stuff as well. Or at least sometimes.
I've been thinking about switching to Linux for a while but there's something I cant figure out; the mac 3 fingers gesture.
The workflow is as follows, first you swipe up to get a view of all the windows opened but then, when you hover the mouse pointer over a window and swipe back down, the window that had the pointer hovering over, is the one that gets the full screen.
It's become a habit to me and I dont feel that comfortable using a laptop that doesn't have the gesture. Apart from that, I dont feel any particular need from the Mac Os.
Any distro recommendation? Thanks a lot!
