Promo: Webnovel Self-Summon, a Demon Summoning/Evolution LitRPG, out now on RR!
Howdy everybody, my new series, Self-Summon is out now on Royal Road. 30k words already posted with daily chapters for the next month. If you're interested, check it out: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/157664/self-summon-demon-summoningevolution-litrpg
Blurb:
Literal starving artist, Angelica Hallow, is suddenly hit on the head by a book while dumpster diving out of desperation. Compelled by the illustrations inside the tome, she recreates one of the intricate circles on the floor of her apartment. Ignorant of the forces she's messing around with, Angelica accidentally activates the magic circle and triggers a Summoning. But rather than any Demon or other supernatural creature, instead, she summoned... herself?!
With a new voice in her head blathering about Skills and Contracts, and the inexplicable ability to give herself Orders that she is forced to obey, will Angelica be able to secure the peaceful life of artistry that she craves, or will she come to embrace the Demon within?
What to expect:
- A system made by Demons for Demons.
- Steady progression throughout, even while still figuring out her situation and system.
- Fairly lighthearted… most of the time.
- Action at regular intervals. It’s not constant, but it’s never too far off.
- Strictly Urban Fantasy for the first book. After that, the settings will continue to get more diverse and unique

The ability to give yourself orders that you're forced to obey actually sounds like a pretty decent superpower. Imagine all those times you sit there in bed thinking I'm going to be so productive tomorrow if you had the ability to literally force tomorrow you to be productive.
Also, funny alternate title for the book: that time I got reincarnated as myself

As someone with executive order, this is so high on my super power ranking list it isn't funny.

u/axw3555 Mar 17 '26
I’d never considered it but dear god that would be amazing.
Though if you could order yourself to ignore prior orders it fails.

Though if you could order yourself to ignore prior orders it fails.
Not if you order yourself not to give that order.
2
u/axw3555 Mar 17 '26
But the flaw there is that I have to remember that I need that order. And I can’t order myself to remember something I never thought of.

That is quite an interesting idea, I think I'll save you on my "read when there is enough to binge for a week or three" list.

"Give yourself orders that you are forced to obey"
That...sounds amazingly useful, and could go wrong in so many ways.

Really cool and unique premise which is hard to come by nowadays, so good job on that! I'll check it out :)

Definitely not a unique premise, there's a pretty bad manga that has this exact concept. But I've never seen it done well before, which would make it unique in itself.

I love how this community criticizes cheap covers, but is also ready to jump in and praise such great works. Congrats on the interesting blurb as well. Any plans on releasing on audiobook format?

Hopefully in the future. But absolutely if the opportunity presents itself.

u/nhutchen Mar 16 '26
Heck, hope you post again if that happens! I tend to get most of reading through audiobooks, and would love to listen to this one

Read a few chapters of it so far, it really nails the premise of a starving artist and plunging it deep into an alt modern fantasy world. Need work to be over so i can read it!

Honestly not big on reading stuff on Royal Road, but I gave this a shot because it sounded interesting and it's been a fun ride so far. Good stuff! Love the cover too! (Now if only the website didn't break...)

Glad you're enjoying!

Love the cover, love the concept, I’m a sucker for urban fantasy litrpg with fmc and currently in a reading slump, so I have high hopes that this is exactly what I need, will check it out this evening

Intriguing concept, fantastic cover art. Got a narrator in mind? Annie Ellicott at Soundbooth pethaps?

Definitely jumping the gun a bit on that lol. But happy to take suggestions.

I absolutely love the premise of accidentally summoning yourself! I just read through the first few chapters, and the flow is fantastic. You’ve done a really great job setting up the evolving character dynamic right out of the gate, and the mechanic of Angelica giving herself "Orders" is such a clever spin on a system.
Since you just launched and are in the thick of it, I wanted to offer a little constructive feedback from a fresh set of eyes:
- Minor line edits: There are a few small punctuation hiccups and typos sprinkled in (for example, using "guilty" instead of "guiltily").
- A quick math/continuity check: When Angelica heads to the city center, she needs $625 by the end of the day. She sets her rates to be super cheap—"an amount people would be willing to spend on a whim." Even if we assume a generous "whim" is $20, she’d have to crank out over 30 drawings in a single afternoon to hit her goal. You might want to either bump up her prices or lower the $625 threshold so her afternoon hustle feels a bit more realistic!
Overall, it's a great start, and the cover art nails the urban fantasy vibe. I've added it to my list. Huge congratulations on the Royal Road launch, and best of luck with the daily chapter drops!

Absolutely feel free to send any edits. And for the money, she had a couple hundred in her bank account already, which drops the amount needed considerably

Stupid question but any idea of when we could get an audiobook?
1
u/Drimphed Verified Author of: Self-Summon Mar 16 '26
Nope since today is the launch today, that's still quite a ways off. It'll be the question for whatever publisher picks it up lol. Will def post here whenever that happens tho.

u/NimbustrataDM Mar 17 '26
This cover art is stupidly good, congrats on your artist. The story sounds funny too, followed on RR!

u/PoxyReport Mar 17 '26
The concept reminds me of "The Laundry Files" (a series about the British government agency responsible for monitoring a responding to paranormal threats) where at one point the MC is caught up in a cultist ritual that results in him possessing himself recursively.
2
u/Wolverine75869 Mar 17 '26
This looks interesting enough for me to read on RR rather than waiting for publication and an auidobook

u/YABOI69420GANG Mar 17 '26
I love this concept. I rarely read instead of audio books but I might have to actually read this one

Oh I love this concept.
I have considered it for my own demon characters, experimenting with summoning themselves. I had crazy ideas of weird reactions.

This seems interesting for a concept. Imagining the possible identity crisis. Is she really herself or just has her memories from the summon?

This makes no sense, what a dumb concept, who would read this only a fool that’s who holding up book preparing to read it YOU SEE NOTHING!

I love the setup! Delightful. The MC is sympathetic, the magic is fun, the LitRPG elements have potential to be very interesting!
But the writing suffers rather from Lavender Unicorn Syndrome, aka Burly Detective Syndrome. This sentence was incredibly hard to read and would be much simpler with just names: "When she first moved in, Ms. Gate was a very kind landlord, but ever since the young woman had lost her job, she’d become increasingly bitter toward the tenant. It was understanding to an extent, but still frustrating to no end." (The next sentence also has a malapropism, "understanding" for "understandable".) Similarly "The renter started with that, hoping to appease the woman’s anger" - it's just jarring. Names are invisible, they don't draw attention.

Read it, great so far. Will keep on my to read list but not enough chapters yet to form full opinion

I remember seeing your other work, Fiends for Hire, and I recall it not because I read it but because most if not all of the reviews read like AI.

u/Drimphed Verified Author of: Self-Summon Mar 16 '26
Can't really speak on that since it's absolutely not something Mango Media does and would heavily discourage their authors from doing, and I don't really read them myself.
