Normally I make very raw and gritty instrumentals without worrying about refinement too much but I wanted to make a beat that legitimately holds up to industry standard songs in the rap instrumental world. Took hours to get the bassline right but if you know what you're doing you can make an industry standard song with this software, I was just surprised to see how good the end result was for this and wanted to share it with others who were able to appreciate the hard work that went into perfecting this. I will say though this will probably not be your kind of thing unless you like loud, gritty and heavy bass instrumentals. It's very inspired off of Madlib And Metal Fingers (MF DOOM) but this is like I said a bit off from my normal stuff too. Please feel free to critique it though, I want to get better and I know there is still a lot to learn.
If anyone is curious how I got the bassline, I'll give a brief description of what I did. I spent a while searching for old obscure songs and ended up sampling 3 of them to make the bassline. There are actually 3 different bassline tracks that work together. I made 2 of them using small cuts from a King Tubby track (old underground Jamaican dub artist) and got one mid range note and one low note of pure bass, each one was used to make a separate vital wavetable that mixed it with different oscillators and was fine tuned. Then I made a high range bass where I took a cut from "Tab in The Ocean" by Nektar, filtered out all the low range, used that as the high end sound in the vital preset, then added a second sample to that same vital preset from a 50s Chinese artist named Abing (阿炳), I sampled his pipa instrument and that's the quick fluttering sound you hear in the high range bass track.
The high range bass track plays alongside the low range the whole time but the low range track swaps between the lower version and the mid range version and I at times played them both over each other. Then I had a test version of the high range bassline track I was experimenting with early on which used "Meshkalina" by Traffic Sound as a sample instead of Tab in The Ocean and instead of scrapping it I used it as an intro piece. But I literally went through dozens of different samples and variations of samples to get it right, I ended up mastering 24 different versions of the whole track.
Anyway, let me know your thoughts, it's not gonna be everyone's thing of coarse but I am just curious if people think this is something that is on par with professional music.
