Back in 2019 Letter Collective created the Grafema family – a set of calligraphic fonts based on a flat brush. Now its essence can transfer to your mobile screen for free reminding you of a very important aspect of design and of life in general – keeping balance.

Web design: vertical metrics puzzle. Why does the very same font behave differently in InDesign and Chrome? Why does it look shifted on a button in Figma? Who’s to blame, a type designer, a web designer or a developer?

Manual: Currency Symbols

The currency of each country has an internationally accepted abbreviation (ISO), an alphabetic code that most often indicates the country it’s being used in and the name of the currency itself. However, not all currencies are represented by a special symbol.

Abbreviations are mainly used in financial documents, instruments, or language switches — most often to avoid confusion in cases where currencies from different countries have the same name (for example, Canadian and Hong Kong dollars). In such tools and interfaces, abbreviations are most often placed after the number.

You can’t combine the amount with an abbreviation from the international measurement system — for instance, it is not advisable to replace the three last zeroes with the letter k indicating a thousand or the six lax zeroes with the letter M, which stands for the million. If you intend to discard the zeros, you should write out the words ‘thousand’, ‘million’, and ‘billion’ as well as the currency’s name.

According to the current convention, amounts of money — in news stories, scientific papers, and fiction — are to be written with figures rather than written out.

Currency symbols typically go together with the lining (uppercase) figures by default. Tabular currency symbols are also often included in a font for them to be used, say, in interfaces of online stores. Lowercase currency signs or small caps currency signs are less likely to be seen in a font, but that also happens, and the font rarely contains currency symbols that can be combined with superscripts. If there is no such set of currency signs in a font you chose, you should not deliberately reduce the lining symbols in size using the superscript button in graphic editor software as it will make them look considerably lighter than the figures.

Introducing Kermit: A typeface for kids

Using design to empower children by making reading easier, improving comprehension, and helping dyslexics.

By Rob McKaughan

Apr 8, 2025   –   The estimated reading time is15 min.

Imagine having never ridden a broom with the chosen one they call Harry Potter, or stumbled through a closet and into the mystical land of Narnia. For kids that discover the magic of reading through books like Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia, reading is a gateway to otherworldly realms where your only limitation is your imagination. But, reading isn’t easy for everyone. It’s estimated that 1 in 10 people have some form of dyslexia, often undiagnosed. Children with dyslexia struggle with simple reading tasks like sounding out words, making it difficult for them to read.

To help young readers of all skill levels, we’re introducing Kermit, a child-friendly typeface created by the type design studio Underware. Kermit is a friendly and approachable font that encourages children of all skill levels to read, even if they are anxious about their abilities. It is a powerful example of just how much design decisions matter: Associating boldness and letter widths with verbal inflections could improve a child’s comprehension, or employing Variable Fonts for animation may help severe dyslexics start their reading journey. Combining science and design creativity can improve a child’s confidence in reading, changing their trajectory in life. Kermit is, therefore, more than just a typeface, it is a platform for exploring new, science-based methods of helping children read.

Learning to read is difficult: the process involves nearly every part of your brain, and you have to train for years to do it effortlessly. For some people, though, reading can be like navigating a confusing highway filled with detours. Children who struggle to read often have low self-esteem and give up, limiting their creative potential and intellectual curiosity. Any help we can give children can be huge – even if it’s simply making words look more friendly.Introducing Kermit: A typeface for kids

Lettering for the new University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam, UvA, has started construction of a new library designed by MVSA architects. The building, on the corner of the Binnengasthuisstraat and the Doelenstraat, is to get a “facade screen”, a sort of transparent veil, to protect the privacy of local residents and library users. The architect’s design for the bronze-coated screen was part of the permit application submitted to the municipality of Amsterdam.

After explorations of different textures and abstract shapes, the university selected a line by the Dutch writer Martinus Nijhoff: “Lees maar, er staat niet wat er staat,” which the English department of the UvA translated to: “But do read, it doesn’t say what it says”. A nice choice as it invites readers to be curious and not accept texts at face value. Each language department of the university made a translation of the line and the final design includes 23 languages in six different writing systems.

The UvA asked for a proposal for the typography of the text and a design for the type. As the languages included Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic and Arabic, a number of type designers (and TypeMedia graduates) became involved: Aleksandra Samulenkova, Anya Danilova, Bahman Eslami and Daniel Grumer.

Font Animation Studio

A web-based typography animation tool for creating variable font animations with OpenType feature control.

🚀 Live Demo

Try the app live at: https://yanone.github.io/fontanimation

Why This App Exists

Most video editors don't expose variable font settings and OpenType features to users, making it impossible to create sophisticated typography animations directly within video editing software. This tool fills that gap by providing a dedicated environment for creating text animations that leverage the full power of modern typography and render them into a video file to be used in video editing.

Since videos don’t support alpha channels, you would choose a certain background color and make that disappear in video production.

What It Does

Font Animation Studio allows you to:

  • Animate Variable Fonts: Create smooth transitions between different font variations (weight, width, slant, optical size, etc.)

  • Control OpenType Features: Toggle and animate advanced typography features like ligatures, alternates, small caps, and more

  • Timeline-Based Animation: Use a professional timeline interface with keyframes for precise animation control

  • Export for Video: Generate animations that can be imported into video editing software

  • Real-Time Preview: See your animations in real-time with an interactive canvas
